Numerical continuation and bifurcation analysis in aircraft design:an industrial perspective

    Get PDF
Bifurcation analysis is a powerful method for studying the steady-state nonlinear dynamics of systems. Software tools exist for the numerical continuation of steady-state solutions as parameters of the system are varied. These tools make it possible to generate ‘maps of solutions’ in an efficient way that provide valuable insight into the overall dynamic behaviour of a system and potentially to influence the design process. While this approach has been employed in the military aircraft control community to understand the effectiveness of controllers, the use of bifurcation analysis in the wider aircraft industry is yet limited. This paper reports progress on how bifurcation analysis can play a role as part of the design process for passenger aircraft.</jats:p

Species-specific responses to landscape fragmentation: implications for management strategies

Habitat fragmentation affects the integrity of many species, but little is known about species-specific sensitivity to fragmentation. Here, we compared the genetic structure of four freshwater fish species differing in their body size (Leuciscus cephalus; Leuciscus leuciscus; Gobio gobio and Phoxinus phoxinus) between a fragmented and a continuous landscape. We tested if, overall, fragmentation affected the genetic structure of these fish species, and if these species differed in their sensitivity to fragmentation. Fragmentation negatively affected the genetic structure of these species. Indeed, irrespective of the species identity, allelic richness and heterozygosity were lower, and population divergence was higher in the fragmented than in the continuous landscape. This response to fragmentation was highly species-specific, with the smallest fish species (P. phoxinus) being slightly affected by fragmentation. On the contrary, fish species of intermediate body size (L. leuciscus and G. gobio) were highly affected, whereas the largest fish species (L. cephalus) was intermediately affected by fragmentation. We discuss the relative role of dispersal ability and effective population size on the responses to fragmentation we report here. The weirs studied here are of considerable historical importance. We therefore conclude that restoration programmes will need to consider both this societal context and the biological characteristics of the species sharing this ecosyste

Safety of hydrogen/natural gas mixtures by pipelines : ANR french project HYDROMEL

International audienceIn order to gain a better understanding of hazards linked with Hydrogen/Natural gas mixtures transport by pipeline, the National Institute of Industrial Environment and Risks (INERIS) alongside with the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the industrial companies Air Liquide and GDF SUEZ, and the French Research Institutes ICARE and PPRIME (CNRS) have been involved in a project called HYDROMEL. This project was partially funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) in the framework of its PAN-H program aimed at promoting the R&D activities related to the hydrogen deployment. Firstly, the project partners investigated how a NG/H2 mixture may influence the modeling of a hazard scenario, i.e. how the addition of a quantity of hydrogen in natural gas can increase the potential of danger. Therefore it was necessary to build an experimental database of physics properties for mixtures. Secondly, effect distances in accidental scenarios that could happen on pipelines have been calculated with existing models adapted to the mixtures. This part was preceded by a benchmark exercise between all partners' models and experimental results found in the literature. Finally the consortium wrote a 'good practice guideline for modeling the effects related to the release of natural gas /hydrogen mixture'. The selected models and their comparison with data collected in the literature as well as the experimental results of this project, and the main conclusions of the guidelines are presented in this paper
