Effects of systemic and non-systemic stresses on the thermal characteristics of corn

    Get PDF
Experiments were conducted on corn plants using a calibrated spectroradiometer under field conditions in the indium antimonide channel (InSb, 2.8 to 5.6 mm) and the mercury cadmium telluride channel (HgCdTe, 7 to 14 mm). A ground cover experiment, an experiment on nonsystemic corn plants, and an experiment on systemic-stressed corn plants were included. The average spectral radiance temperature of corn plant populations was found (1) to be statistically significantly different for four healthy corn plant populations, (2) to increase with increased blight severity, and (3) to be statistically significantly different for varying rates of nitrogen applications

A laser technique for characterizing the geometry of plant canopies

The interception of solar power by the canopy is investigated as a function of solar zenith angle (time), component of the canopy, and depth into the canopy. The projected foliage area, cumulative leaf area, and view factors within the canopy are examined as a function of the same parameters. Two systems are proposed that are capable of describing the geometrical aspects of a vegetative canopy and of operation in an automatic mode. Either system would provide sufficient data to yield a numerical map of the foliage area in the canopy. Both systems would involve the collection of large data sets in a short time period using minimal manpower

Effect of dithiocarbamate thiram on Wistar rat growth plate and articular cartilage

Structural and chemical characterization of silica spheres before and after modification by silanization for trypsin immobilization.

In the last decades, silica particles of a variety of sizes and shapes have been characterized and chemically modified for several applications, from chromatographic separation to dental supplies. The present study proposes the use of aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTS) silanized silica particles to immobilize the proteolytic enzyme trypsin for the development of a bioreactor. The major advantage of the process is that it enables the polypeptides hydrolysis interruption simply by removing the silica particles from the reaction bottle. Silanized silica surfaces showed significant morphological changes at micro- and nanoscale level. Chemical characterization showed changes in elemental composition, chemical environment, and thermal degradation. Their application as supports for trypsin immobilization showed high immobilization efficiency at reduced immobilization times, combined with more acidic conditions. Indirect immobilization quantification by reversed-phase ultrafast high performance liquid chromatography proved to be a suitable approach due to its high linearity and sensitivity. Immobilized trypsin activities on nonmodified and silanized silica showed promising features (e.g., selective hydrolysis) for applications in proteins/peptides primary structure elucidation for proteomics. Silanized silica system produced some preferential targeting peptides, probably due to the hydrophobicity of the nanoenvironment conditioned by silanization

Moving to the cloud: Estimating the internet connection bandwidth

    Get PDF
IT Infrastructures (ITIs) have long been understood in terms of people and resources such as servers, routers, firewalls and operating systems, among other components, running and providing services inside the organization. The need to reduce the cost of ITI ownership, by offloading its capacity to third parties, has motivated organizations to consider the Cloud Computing alternative. The main drawback they face when opting for the cloud is the dependency on and requirements of the internet connection, since it must be fast and reliable. This paper addresses this concern by providing guidelines for estimating internet connection bandwidth requirements for a prototypical cloud-based organization represented by means of an IT infrastructure pattern. ITI patterns are reusable and proven solutions to support the ITI design process and to facilitate the communication among stakeholders.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
