    Multi-year total ozone column variability at three Norwegian sites and the influence of Northern Hemisphere Climatic indices

    Total ozone column (TOC) measurements are retrieved from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite at the three Norwegian sites: Oslo (59.9 degrees N 10.7 degrees E, 1 m a.s. l.), Trondheim (63.4 degrees N 10.4 degrees E, 3 m a.s.l.) and Andoya (69.1 degrees N 15.7 degrees E, 32 m a.s.l.). TOC data have been analysed from 2005 to 2021, in order to detect annual and multi-years total ozone variability. The relationship between geopotential height (GPH) at 250 hPa and total ozone column has been evaluated after showing that monthly anomalies in GPH and TOC are correlated amongst the three sites. The influence of the three Northern Hemisphere Tele Connection (TC) indices (North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation and Scandinavia) on TOC variability has been investigated. It is found that Scandinavia index plays a prominent role for the northernmost latitudes of Andoya and Trondheim while North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation indices are weakly correlated (negatively) to TOC and (positively) to GPH at Oslo. The response of TOC variability to the solar activity at the three sites is also explored and it is noticed that in the period of increasing variation of solar activity, significant TOC anomaly events are only observed in Andoya and Trondheim

    An investigation on total ozone over western Mediterranean

    During recent years ozone depletion has been detected not only over polar regions but also over mid-latitude areas. This study analyzed daily total ozone (TO) data from three south-western European locations in order to detect long-time TO trends by means of a filtering technique. Correlation analysis with atmospheric circulation patterns was carried out to explain the decreasing trends observed. Results appear to show a strong correlation between TO decrease and the North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation Indices throughout recent decades. On the other hand, the trends also indicate that, at least during the last ten years, TO variations cannot be explained solely by natural atmospheric cycles over the studied area

    Ground-based NO2 measurements at the Italian Brewer stations: A pilot study with Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)

    Ground-based NO2 total column measurements have been collected since 1992 using Brewer spectrophotometry at Rome, an urban site, and Ispra (semirural). These are the only ground-based stations regularly monitoring NO2 in Italy. The methodology of measurement together with the procedure to control its quality is described. From the analysis of the time series it was found that the mean value of the NO2 column is 1.63 DU atRome and 1.60 DU atIspra. A firstat tempt to compare NO2 vertical column densities (VCD) from GOME with those derived from ground-based Brewer measurements, under different atmospheric conditions and measurement time lags is here presented. The results of this pilot study showed unsatisfactory agreement because different atmospheres are probed by GOME and Brewer instruments. The GOME space resolution resulted insufficient to fully characterize the Rome and Ispra highly localized polluted areas

    EXAFS Characterization of Dendrimer‐Derived Pt/γ‐Al\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3eO\u3csub\u3e3\u3c/sub\u3e

    The various steps involved in the preparation of a Pt/γ‐Al2O3 material using hydroxyl‐terminated generation four (G4OH) PAMAM dendrimers as templates were monitored by EXAFS. The results indicate that Cl ligands in the Pt precursors (H2PtCl6 and K2PtCl4) were partially replaced by aquo ligands upon hydrolysis to form [PtCl3(H2O)3]+ and [PtCl2(H2O)2] species. After interaction of such species with G4OH, Cl ligands from the first coordination shell of Pt were further replaced by nitrogen atoms from the dendrimer interior, indicating the complexation of Pt with the dendrimer. This process was accompanied by a transfer of the electron density from the dendrimer to Pt, indicating that the former plays the role of a ligand. Following treatment of the H2PtCl6/G4OH and K2PtCl4/G4OH composites with NaBH4, no substantial changes were detecteded in the electronic or coordination environment of Pt, and no formation of metal nanoparticles was observed. However, when the reduction treatment was performed with H2, the formation of extremely small Pt clusters incorporating no more than 4 Pt atoms was observed. These Pt species remained strongly bonded to the dendrimer and their nuclearity depends on the length of the H2 treatment. Formation of Pt nanoparticles with an average diameter of approximately 10 Å was finally observed after the deposition of H2PtCl6/G4OH on γ‐Al2O3 and drying, suggesting that their formation may be related to the collapse of the dendrimer structure. The Pt nanoparticles formed appear to have high mobility, since subsequent thermal treatment in O2/H2 led to further sintering

    Tracking atmospheric and riverine terrigenous supplies variability during the last glacial and the Holocene in central Mediterranean

    International audienceA multiproxy study coupling mineralogical, grain size and geochemical approaches was used to tentatively retrace eolian and fluvial contributions to sedimentation in the Sicilian Tunisian Strait since the last glacial. The eolian supply is dominant over the whole interval, excepted during the sapropel Si when riverine contribution apparently became significant. Saharan contribution increased during the B011ing Allerod, evidencing the persistence of aridity over North Africa although the northern Mediterranean already experienced moister and warmer conditions. The Younger Dryas is marked by proximal dust inputs, highlighting intense regional eolian activity. A southward migration of dust provenance toward Sahel occurred at the onset of the Holocene, likely resulting from a southward position of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone that was probably associated with a large-scale atmospheric reorganization. Finally, a peculiar high terrigenous flux associated with drastic modifications of the mineralogical and geochemical sediment signature occurred during the sapropel 51, suggesting the propagation of fine particles derived from major floodings of the Nile River resulting from enhanced rainfall on northeastern Africa and their transportation across the Sicilian Tunisian Strait by intermediate water masses

    Review on Occupational Personal Solar UV Exposure Measurements

    During leisure time, people can decide if they want to expose themselves to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation and to which extent. During occupation, people do not have this choice. Outdoor workers are exposed to solar UV radiation (UVR) on a daily basis. This may hold a certain health risk, which can be estimated when the personal solar UVR exposure (PE) is known. During the past decades, a variety of studies was conducted to measure PE of outdoor workers and our knowledge on the PE of outdoor workers has remarkably increased. As shown by this review, studies clearly indicate that PE of most of outdoor workers exceeds the internationally proposed threshold limit value, which is comparable to 1.0 to 1.3 SED, respectively to 1.1 to 1.5 UV Index received over one hour. Besides working in a high UVR environment, monotonic workflow (limited movement, nearly static posture) is a risk factor. In such cases, PE can be higher than ambient UVR. In this review, we provide also a list of milestone, depicting the progress and the most important findings in this field during the past 45 years. However, in many respects our knowledge is still rudimentary, because of several reasons. Different measuring positions have been used so that measured PE is not comparable. Few studies were designed to enable extension of measured PE to other locations or dates. Although the importance of a proper calibration of the measuring devices in respect to the changing solar spectrum was pointed out from the beginning, this is often not performed, which leads to high uncertainties in the presented PE levels. At the end of our review, we provide some key points, which can be used to evaluate the quality of a study respectively to support the design of future studies
