Vacuum spacetimes of embedding class two
Doubt is cast on the much quoted results of Yakupov that the torsion vector in embedding class two vacuum space-times is necessarily a gradient vector and that class 2 vacua of Petrov type III do not exist. The rst result is equivalent to the fact that the two second fundamental forms associated with the embedding necessarily commute and has been assumed in most later investigations of class 2 vacuum space-times. Yakupov stated the result without proof, but hinted that it followed purely algebraically from his identity: Rijkl Ckl = 0 where Cij is the commutator of the two second fundamental forms of the embedding.From Yakupov's identity, it is shown that the only class two vacua with non-zero commutator Cij must necessarily be of Petrov type III or N. Several examples are presented of non-commuting second fundamental forms that satisfy Yakupovs identity and the vacuum condition following from the Gauss equation; both Petrov type N and type III examples occur. Thus it appears unlikely that his results could follow purely algebraically. The results obtained so far do not constitute denite counter-examples to Yakupov's results as the non-commuting examples could turn out to be incompatible with the Codazzi and Ricci embedding equations. Nonuniversal Shot Noise in Disordered Quantum Wires with Channel-Number Imbalance
The number of conducting channels for one propagating direction is equal to
that for the other direction in ordinary quantum wires. However, they can be
imbalanced in graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges. Employing the model
system in which a degree of channel-number imbalance can be controlled, we
calculate the shot-noise power at zero frequency by using the
Boltzmann-Langevin approach. The shot-noise power in an ordinary diffusive
conductor is one-third of the Poisson value. We show that with increasing the
degree of channel-number imbalance, the universal one-third suppression breaks
down and a highly nonuniversal behavior of shot noise appears.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Is early center-based child care associated with tantrums and unmanageable behavior over time up to school entry?
Background. Existing research suggests that there is a relationship between greater exposure to center-based child care and child behavioral problems though the mechanism for the impact is unclear. However the measure used to document child care has usually been average hours, which may be particularly unreliable in the early months when fewer children are in center care. In addition individual trajectories for behavior difficulties have not been studied.
Objective. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether the extent of exposure to center-based child care before two years predicted the trajectory of children’s difficult behavior (i.e., tantrums and unmanageable behavior) from 30 to 51 months controlling for child and maternal characteristics.
Method. Data were drawn from UK-based Families, Children and Child Care (FCCC) study (n=1201). Individual growth models were fitted to test the relation between early center-based child care experiences and subsequent difficult behavior.
Results. Children with more exposure to center-based care before two had less difficult behavior at 30 months, but more increase over time. Initial levels were predicted by higher difficult temperament and lower verbal ability. Higher difficult temperament and lower family socio-economic status predicted its change over time.
Conclusion. Findings suggest that early exposure to center-based care before two years old is a risk factor for subsequent behavior problems especially when children have a longer period of exposure. A possible explanatory process is that child coping strategies to manage frustration are less well developed in a group context, especially when they lag behind in expressive language
(E)-3-[4-(Dimethylamino)benzylidene]-2,3-dihydro-1H,9H-pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-9-one
The title compound, C20H19N3O, was obtained by condensation of 2,3-dihydro-1H,9H-pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-9-one (alkaloid deoxyvasicinone, isolated from Peganum Harmala) with 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde in the presence of sodium methoxide. The 2,3-dihydro-1H,9H-pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-9-one part of the molecule is roughly planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0178 Å) and is essentially coplanar with the benzilidene ring (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0080 Å), forming a dihedral angle of 5.0 (1)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by two aromatic π–π stacking interactions observed between the benzene rings of neighboring molecules [centroid–centroid distance = 3.7555 (19) Å
Efficient unidirectional nanoslit couplers for surface plasmons
Plasmonics is based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes which can be
laterally confined below the diffraction limit, thereby enabling ultracompact
optical components. In order to exploit this potential, the fundamental
bottleneck of poor light-SPP coupling must be overcome. In established SPP
sources (using prism, grating} or nanodefect coupling) incident light is a
source of noise for the SPP, unless the illumination occurs away from the
region of interest, increasing the system size and weakening the SPP intensity.
Back-side illumination of subwavelength apertures in optically thick metal
films eliminates this problem but does not ensure a unique propagation
direction for the SPP. We propose a novel back-side slit-illumination method
based on drilling a periodic array of indentations at one side of the slit. We
demonstrate that the SPP running in the array direction can be suppressed, and
the one propagating in the opposite direction enhanced, providing localized
unidirectional SPP launching.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Potential conservation of circadian clock proteins in the phylum Nematoda as revealed by bioinformatic searches
Although several circadian rhythms have been described in C. elegans, its molecular clock remains elusive. In this work we employed a novel bioinformatic approach, applying probabilistic methodologies, to search for circadian clock proteins of several of the best studied circadian model organisms of different taxa (Mus musculus, Drosophila melanogaster, Neurospora crassa, Arabidopsis thaliana and Synechoccocus elongatus) in the proteomes of C. elegans and other members of the phylum Nematoda. With this approach we found that the Nematoda contain proteins most related to the core and accessory proteins of the insect and mammalian clocks, which provide new insights into the nematode clock and the evolution of the circadian system.Fil: Romanowski, Andrés.
