On Functionality of Visibly Pushdown Transducers
Visibly pushdown transducers form a subclass of pushdown transducers that
(strictly) extends finite state transducers with a stack. Like visibly pushdown
automata, the input symbols determine the stack operations. In this paper, we
prove that functionality is decidable in PSpace for visibly pushdown
transducers. The proof is done via a pumping argument: if a word with two
outputs has a sufficiently large nesting depth, there exists a nested word with
two outputs whose nesting depth is strictly smaller. The proof uses technics of
word combinatorics. As a consequence of decidability of functionality, we also
show that equivalence of functional visibly pushdown transducers is
Exptime-Complete.Comment: 20 page
Using ultra-thin parylene films as an organic gate insulator in nanowire field-effect transistors
We report the development of nanowire field-effect transistors featuring an
ultra-thin parylene film as a polymer gate insulator. The room temperature,
gas-phase deposition of parylene is an attractive alternative to oxide
insulators prepared at high temperatures using atomic layer deposition. We
discuss our custom-built parylene deposition system, which is designed for
reliable and controlled deposition of <100 nm thick parylene films on III-V
nanowires standing vertically on a growth substrate or horizontally on a device
substrate. The former case gives conformally-coated nanowires, which we used to
produce functional -gate and gate-all-around structures. These give
sub-threshold swings as low as 140 mV/dec and on/off ratios exceeding at
room temperature. For the gate-all-around structure, we developed a novel
fabrication strategy that overcomes some of the limitations with previous
lateral wrap-gate nanowire transistors. Finally, we show that parylene can be
deposited over chemically-treated nanowire surfaces; a feature generally not
possible with oxides produced by atomic layer deposition due to the surface
`self-cleaning' effect. Our results highlight the potential for parylene as an
alternative ultra-thin insulator in nanoscale electronic devices more broadly,
with potential applications extending into nanobioelectronics due to parylene's
well-established biocompatible properties
Seesaw Neutrino Masses with Large Mixings from Dimensional Deconstruction
We demonstrate a dynamical origin for the dimension-five seesaw operator in
dimensional deconstruction models. Light neutrino masses arise from the seesaw
scale which corresponds to the inverse lattice spacing. It is shown that the
deconstructing limit naturally prefers maximal leptonic mixing. Higher-order
corrections which are allowed by gauge invariance can transform the bi-maximal
into a bi-large mixing. These terms may appear to be non-renormalizable at
scales smaller than the deconstruction scale.Comment: Revised version published in PR
Voltage-controlled electron-hole interaction in a single quantum dot
The ground state of neutral and negatively charged excitons confined to a
single self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot is probed in a direct absorption
experiment by high resolution laser spectroscopy. We show how the anisotropic
electron-hole exchange interaction depends on the exciton charge and
demonstrate how the interaction can be switched on and off with a small dc
voltage. Furthermore, we report polarization sensitive analysis of the
excitonic interband transition in a single quantum dot as a function of charge
with and without magnetic field.Comment: Conference Proceedings, Physics and Applications of Spin-Related

Potential stocks and increments of woody biomass in the European Union under different management and climate scenarios
BACKGROUND: Forests play an important role in the global carbon flow. They can store carbon and can also provide wood which can substitute other materials. In EU27 the standing biomass is steadily increasing. Increments and harvests seem to have reached a plateau between 2005 and 2010. One reason for reaching this plateau will be the circumstance that the forests are getting older. High ages have the advantage that they typical show high carbon concentration and the disadvantage that the increment rates are decreasing. It should be investigated how biomass stock, harvests and increments will develop under different climate scenarios and two management scenarios where one is forcing to store high biomass amounts in forests and the other tries to have high increment rates and much harvested wood.
RESULTS: A management which is maximising standing biomass will raise the stem wood carbon stocks from 30 tC/ha to 50 tC/ha until 2100. A management which is maximising increments will lower the stock to 20 tC/ha until 2100. The estimates for the climate scenarios A1b, B1 and E1 are different but there is much more effect by the management target than by the climate scenario. By maximising increments the harvests are 0.4 tC/ha/year higher than in the management which maximises the standing biomass. The increments until 2040 are close together but around 2100 the increments when maximising standing biomass are approximately 50 % lower than those when maximising increments. Cold regions will benefit from the climate changes in the climate scenarios by showing higher increments.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that forest management should maximise increments, not stocks to be more efficient in sense of climate change mitigation. This is true especially for regions which have already high carbon stocks in forests, what is the case in many regions in Europe. During the time span 2010-2100 the forests of EU27 will absorb additional 1750 million tC if they are managed to maximise increments compared if they are managed to maximise standing biomass. Incentives which will increase the standing biomass beyond the increment optimal biomass should therefore be avoided. Mechanisms which will maximise increments and sustainable harvests need to be developed to have substantial amounts of wood which can be used as substitution of non sustainable materials

Polyhedral Analysis using Parametric Objectives
The abstract domain of polyhedra lies at the heart of many program analysis techniques. However, its operations can be expensive, precluding their application to polyhedra that involve many variables. This paper describes a new approach to computing polyhedral domain operations. The core of this approach is an algorithm to calculate variable elimination (projection) based on parametric linear programming. The algorithm enumerates only non-redundant inequalities of the projection space, hence permits anytime approximation of the output
Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy on a single self-assembled charge-tunable quantum dot
We have performed detailed photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectroscopy
on the same single self-assembled quantum dot in a charge-tunable device. The
transition from neutral to charged exciton in the PL occurs at a more negative
voltage than the corresponding transition in absorption. We have developed a
model of the Coulomb blockade to account for this observation. At large
negative bias, the absorption broadens as a result of electron and hole
tunneling. We observe resonant features in this regime whenever the quantum dot
hole level is resonant with two-dimensional hole states located at the capping
layer-blocking barrier interface in our structure.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
