Developed using the National Expert SDG7 Tool for Energy Planning (NEXSTEP)The key objective of this SDG 7 Road Map for Pakistan is to assist the Government of Pakistan to develop enabling policy measures to achieve the SDG 7 targets. This Road Map contains a matrix of technological options and enabling-policy measures for the Government of Pakistan to consider. It presents three core scenarios (BAU, CPS and SDG scenarios) and two ambitious scenarios that have been developed using national data, and which consider existing energy policies and strategies and reflect on other development plans. These scenarios are expected to enable the Government to make an informed decision to develop and implement a set of policies to achieve SDG 7 by 2030, together with the NDC

Gendered immobility: influence of social roles and local context on mobility decisions in Pakistan

This paper examines the instances of one-day immobility in Pakistan and reports its socio-demographic determinants using the nationally representative dataset of the 2007 Pakistan Time Use Survey. Of 37,830 time diary respondents, nearly 30% did not report travel during the diary day. Homemakers and those out of the workforce were more likely to be immobile than employed or student respondents. Immobility rates were very high among women (55%) as compared to men (4%). Among women, those between 20 and 34 years of age, married, with children, having better education, dependent on other household members and those living in higher income households were more likely to be immobile. The excessive gender nature of immobility seems to be triggered by a gender-based sociocultural environment, which restricts female mobility due to family honor concerns. Other than this, those living in the provinces of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or in urban areas were more likely to be immobile than those living in Punjab and Sindh provinces or in rural areas. The significant geographic effect at broader spatial scale is caused by the demographic structure as well as due to differences in the social and cultural context of these areas. Finally, questions regarding the measurement of immobility and the potential implications of increased female immobility are discussed

In particular, the report looks at post-pandemic evidence with regard to digital trade integration. In-depth interviews were conducted with relevant public sector bodies, regulatory organizations, the private sector, citizen groups, think tanks, development partners and other related stakeholders. The report considers digital trade in goods and services involving digitally-enabled transactions involving consumers, firms and Governments. The analysis highlights the constraints that hinder trade and foreign investment in digital trade. The legislative and regulatory requirements for transfer, retention and protection of data, together with the constraints faced in the transition towards the digitization of the economy are discussed. The recommendations made in this report will help to achieve goals under recent policies announced for the uplifting of the digital sector. Inflation and Food Security in Pakistan: Impact and Coping Strategies*

    No full text
Food security will remain an important component of any strategy for nutritional improvement in Pakistan. The country experienced acute price spikes and shortages during 2007 and 2008, corresponding with food price inflation and volatility in global markets. This led to the clearer articulation of a food security approach based on a closer alignment with world prices and the establishment of a cash transfer programme to compensate poor households. This article presents the results of a qualitative study of food security among rural and urban households in selected regions to better understand the perceptions, behaviour, processes and coping strategies of the poor with regard to food security in general, and price shocks in particular. The study offers insights into gaps in existing policy approaches to food security and potential areas of pro?nutrition policy change
