    Lieb Mode in a Quasi One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate of Atoms

    We calculate the dispersion relation associated with a solitary wave in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a harmonic, cylindrical trap in the limit of weak and strong interactions. In both cases, the dispersion relation is linear for long wavelength excitations and terminates at the point where the group velocity vanishes.     Extreme wave activity during 2013/2014 winter and morphological impacts along the Atlantic coast of Europe

    Studies of coastal vulnerability due to climate change tend to focus on the consequences of sea level rise, rather than the complex coastal responses resulting from changes to the extreme wave climate. Here we investigate the 2013/2014 winter wave conditions that severely impacted the Atlantic coast of Europe and demonstrate that this winter was the most energetic along most of the Atlantic coast of Europe since at least 1948. Along exposed open-coast sites, extensive beach and dune erosion occurred due to offshore sediment transport. More sheltered sites experienced less erosion and one of the sites even experienced accretion due to beach rotation induced by alongshore sediment transport. Storm wave conditions such as were encountered during the 2013/2014 winter have the potential to dramatically change the equilibrium state (beach gradient, coastal alignment, and nearshore bar position) of beaches along the Atlantic coast of Europe

    Transient advanced mental impairment: An underappreciated morbidity after aortic surgery

    AbstractObjectives: To determine the incidence, risk factors, and associated morbidity of transient advanced mental impairment (TAMI) after aortic surgery. Methods: We retrospectively studied the charts of 188 consecutive patients undergoing elective aortic reconstruction during a recent 6-year period at a university hospital. All patients were lucid on admission and nonintubated at the time of evaluation at least 2 days after operation. TAMI was defined as disorientation or confusion on 2 or more postoperative days. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative clinical variables were examined statistically for associations with TAMI. Results: Fifty-three patients (28%) had development of TAMI 3.9 ± 2.8 days after operation. Stepwise logistic regression analysis selected the following independent predictors for TAMI: age >65 years (odds ratio [OR], 7.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7 to 23.7), American Society of Anesthesiology physical status classification >3 (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.3 to 5.9), diabetes mellitus (OR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.2 to 9.8), old myocardial infarction (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.1 to 5.3), and hypertension (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.0 to 5.3). Alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with TAMI. In the postoperative period, patients with TAMI were more likely to have hypoxia (P <.001), a need for reintubation (P <.001), pneumonia (P <.001), congestive heart failure (P =.003), and kidney failure (P =.05). In addition, patients with TAMI had a longer duration of endotracheal intubation (3.7 ± 7.8 vs 0.6 ± 1.2 days, P <.001), stay in the intensive care unit (8.9 ± 9 vs 3.9 ± 2 days, P <.001), and postoperative hospital stay (14.8 ± 11 vs 9.2 ± 5 days, P <.001) than patients without TAMI. Twenty (38%) patients with TAMI were discharged to intermediate-care facilities, compared with 11 (8%) patients without TAMI (P <.001). Postoperative variables conferring the largest relative risks for development of TAMI included oxygen saturation less than 92% (5.4), the need for reintubation (3.3), congestive heart failure (3.3), and pneumonia (3.2). TAMI, conversely, conferred the largest relative risks for development of postoperative congestive heart failure (15.3), the need for reintubation (9.3), pneumonia (7.1), and the need for ICU readmission (3.8). Conclusions: These data show that TAMI is prevalent among patients undergoing aortic reconstruction and is associated with dramatically increased morbidity and postoperative hospitalization rates.     Size matters: the value of small populations for wintering waterbirds

    Protecting systematically selected areas of land is a major step towards biodiversity conservation worldwide. Indeed, the identification and designation of protected areas more often than not forms a core component of both national and international conservation policies. In this paper we provide an overview of those Special Protection Areas and Ramsar Sites that have been classified in Great Britain as of 1998/99 for a selection of wintering waterbird species, using bird count data from the Wetland Bird Survey. The performance of this network of sites is remarkable, particularly in comparison with published analyses of networks elsewhere in the world. Nevertheless, the current site-based approach, whilst having the great benefit of simplicity, is deliberately biased towards aggregating species at the expense of the more dispersed distribution species. To ensure that the network continues successfully to protect nationally and internationally important waterbird populations, efforts now need to concentrate on the derivation of species-specific representation targets and, in particular, the ways in which these can be incorporated into the site selection process. Although these analyses concern the performance of protected areas for waterbirds in Great Britain, the results have wide-ranging importance for conservation planning in general and the design of protected area networks

    Clinical presentation, auscultation recordings, ultrasonographic findings and treatment response of 12 adult cattle with chronic suppurative pneumonia: case study

    Auscultation is considered the critical component of the veterinary clinical examination for the diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease but the accuracy with which adventitious sounds reflect underlying lung pathology remains largely unproven. Modern portable ultrasound machines provide the veterinary practitioner with an inexpensive, non-invasive tool with which to examine the pleural surfaces and superficial lung parenchyma. Simultaneous recording of sounds overlying normal lung and defined pathology allows critical assessment of auscultated sounds in the same animal removing confounding factors such as respiratory rate and thickness of the chest wall (body condition). Twelve cows, referred to the University of Edinburgh Veterinary School, were diagnosed with chronic suppurative pneumonia and enrolled into this prospective study to record and monitor lung sounds, ultrasonographic findings, and response to a standardised antibiotic treatment regimen. Most cows (8/12) had a normal rectal temperature on presentation but all cows had received antibiotic therapy at some time in the previous two weeks and six animals were receiving antibiotic treatment upon admission. All cattle were tachypnoeic (>40 breaths per minute) with frequent and productive coughing, halitosis, and a purulent nasal discharge most noticeable when the head was lowered. Ultrasonographic examination of the chest readily identified pathological changes consistent with severe lung pathology subsequently confirmed as chronic suppurative pneumonia in four cows at necropsy; eight cows recovered well after antibiotic treatment and were discharged two to six weeks after admission. It proved difficult to differentiate increased audibility of normal lung sounds due to tachypnoea from wheezes; coarse crackles were not commonly heard. In general, sounds were reduced in volume over consolidated lung relative to normal lung tissue situated dorsally. Rumen contraction sounds were commonly transmitted over areas of lung pathology. Trueperella (formerly Arcanobacterium) pyogenes was isolated from three of four lung tissue samples at necrospy. Treatment with procaine penicillin for 42 consecutive days resulted in marked improvement with return to normal appetite and improvement in body condition in 8 of 12 cows (67%) where lesions did not extend more than 10-15 cm above the level of the olecranon on both sides of the chest

    Gravitational waves from merging compact binaries

    Largely motivated by the development of highly sensitive gravitational-wave detectors, our understanding of merging compact binaries and the gravitational waves they generate has improved dramatically in recent years. Breakthroughs in numerical relativity now allow us to model the coalescence of two black holes with no approximations or simplifications. There has also been outstanding progress in our analytical understanding of binaries. We review these developments, examining merging binaries using black hole perturbation theory, post-Newtonian expansions, and direct numerical integration of the field equations. We summarize these approaches and what they have taught us about gravitational waves from compact binaries. We place these results in the context of gravitational-wave generating systems, analyzing the impact gravitational wave emission has on their sources, as well as what we can learn about them from direct gravitational-wave measurements.Comment: 90 pages, 12 figures.     The effect of risk of misstatement and workload pressure on the choice of workpaper review format

    Paper presented at the 2007 International Symposium on Audit Research, Shanghai, China.The advent of electronic communication and electronic workpapers at audit firms has provided workpaper reviewers with options of how to interact with their audit team. Concurrently, other review formats have developed that rely more on in-person communication (e.g., review-by-interview). Prior research indicates that in-person discussion during review results in qualitatively different workpapers and judgments than when the reviewer interacts with the workpaper preparer electronically. As reviewers typically have discretion over how to conduct their reviews, the choice of review format can be viewed as a controllable audit input. Thus, the reviewer’s choice of review format could impact the quality of the audit review team’s work. Our study extends the audit review process literature by examining reviewers’ choice of the form of their reviews and by considering factors that influence that choice. Specifically, we examine the effect of misstatement risk and workload pressure on this choice. We find that misstatement risk and workload pressure affect reviewers’ review mode choices, with both those facing low risk and those under high pressure more likely to perform their reviews electronically. Further, risk and workload pressure interact to affect reviewers’ likelihood of choosing to review electronically. Results indicate that misstatement risk moderates the effect of workload pressure such that, when risk is high, the effect of workload pressure is reduced. Our findings provide insight to firms and regulators regarding the impact of misstatement risk and workload pressure on how audit workpaper reviewers conduct their reviews. These issues are particularly relevant in light of recent changes in the regulatory environment that both emphasize the auditor’s role in detecting fraud/misstatements and exacerbate traditional workload pressures during busy times of the year
