    Sport concussion assessment tool-Third edition normative reference values for professional Rugby Union players

    Objectives: To establish normative reference data for the SCAT3 in professional Rugby Union players. Design: A cross sectional study in professional Rugby Union players competing in national and international professional competitions between 2015 and 2016. Methods: The SCAT3 was administered pre-season or prior to tournaments. Data was collected electronically using a custom tablet application. SCAT3 subcomponents distributions were described and normative ranges determined using percentile cut-offs for average, unusually low/high, and extremely low/high scores. The association between player characteristics and performance in SCAT3 subcomponents was also investigated in exploratory analyses. Results: A total of 3611 professional Rugby Union players were included. The most common baseline symptom was fatigue (14%). The symptom score median (md) was 0 (interquartile range (IQR) = 0-1). Symptom severity md was 0 (IQR = 0-1). The md of the SAC score was 28 (IQR = 26-29). The md of the MBESS was 2 (IQR = 0-4). The Tandem gait md was 11.1. s (IQR = 10.0-12.7. s). Upper limb coordination was normal in 98.4%. Younger age and lower educational level were associated with worse performance on delayed recall and reverse month sub-components of the SCAT3 (p. < . 0.0001). No statistically significant differences in SCAT3 subcomponents were evident across gender. Conclusions: Representative normative reference values for the SCAT3 among professional Rugby Union players are provided. Baseline performance on concentration and delayed recall tests may be lower in younger athletes or in those with lower educational level

    A picture tells a thousand words: A content analysis of concussion-related images online.

    BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recently image-sharing social media platforms have become a popular medium for sharing health-related images and associated information. However within the field of sports medicine, and more specifically sports related concussion, the content of images and meta-data shared through these popular platforms have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to analyse the content of concussion-related images and its accompanying meta-data on image-sharing social media platforms. METHODS: We retrieved 300 images from Pinterest, Instagram and Flickr by using a standardised search strategy. All images were screened and duplicate images were removed. We excluded images if they were: non-static images; illustrations; animations; or screenshots. The content and characteristics of each image was evaluated using a customised coding scheme to determine major content themes, and images were referenced to the current international concussion management guidelines. RESULTS: From 300 potentially relevant images, 176 images were included for analysis; 70 from Pinterest, 63 from Flickr, and 43 from Instagram. Most images were of another person or a scene (64%), with the primary content depicting injured individuals (39%). The primary purposes of the images were to share a concussion-related incident (33%) and to dispense education (19%). For those images where it could be evaluated, the majority (91%) were found to reflect the Sports Concussion Assessment Tool 3 (SCAT3) guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: The ability to rapidly disseminate rich information though photos, images, and infographics to a wide-reaching audience suggests that image-sharing social media platforms could be used as an effective communication tool for sports concussion. Public health strategies could direct educative content to targeted populations via the use of image-sharing platforms. Further research is required to understand how image-sharing platforms can be used to effectively relay evidence-based information to patients and sports medicine clinicians

    Altered dynamic postural control during gait termination following concussion

    Impaired postural control is a cardinal symptom following concussion. Planned gait termination (GT) is a non-novel, dynamic task that challenges postural control in individuals with neurological deficits, and it could be an impactful measure for identifying dynamic postural control impairments following concussion. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess acute post-concussion dynamic postural control utilizing a planned GT task. The concussion participants (n= 19, age: 19.0 ± 0.8 years, height: 177.0 ± 10.1 cm, weight: 83.3 ± 20.0 kg) completed five planned GT trials during preseason baseline testing (Baseline) and on Day 1 post-concussion (Day-1). Healthy control participants (n=19, age: 20.4 ± 1.2 years, height: 173.8 ± 8.9 cm, weight: 80.2 ± 17.6 kg) completed the same trials a week apart. The dependent variables of interest included COP displacement and velocity in the mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) axes during the three phases (braking, transitional, stabilization) of planned GT. There were significant interactions observed in both the braking ML and transitional AP displacement (p= 0.042, p= 0.030) and velocity (p= 0.027, p= 0.030). These results suggest a conservative post-concussion motor control strategy during planned GT. Further, these results support the use of dynamic postural control tasks as measures of post-concussion impairments
