An adaptive non-raster scanning method in atomic force microscopy for simple sample shapes
It is a significant challenge to reduce the scanning time in atomic force microscopy while retaining imaging quality. In this paper, a novel non-raster scanning method for high-speed imaging is presented. The method proposed here is developed for a specimen with the simple shape of a cell. The image is obtained by scanning the boundary of the specimen at successively increasing heights, creating a set of contours. The scanning speed is increased by employing a combined prediction algorithm, using a weighted prediction from the contours scanned earlier, and from the currently scanned contour. In addition, an adaptive change in the height step after each contour scan is suggested. A rigorous simulation test bed recreates the x-y specimen stage dynamics and the cantilever height control dynamics, so that a detailed parametric comparison of the scanning algorithms is possible. The data from different scanning algorithms are compared after the application of an image interpolation algorithm (the Delaunay interpolation algorithm), which can also run on-line.We would like to acknowledge the support of the Engineering

A Multi-mode Transverse Dynamic Force Microscope - Design, Identification and Control

(TDFM) and its shear force sensing principle permit true
non-contact force detection in contrast to typical atomic
force microscopes. The two TDFM measurement signals
for the cantilever allow, in principle, two different scanning
modes of which, in particular, the second presented here
permits a full-scale non-contact scan. Previous research
mainly focused on developing the sensing mechanism,
whereas this work investigates the vertical axis dynamics
for advanced robust closed-loop control. This paper
presents a new TDFM digital control solution, built on
field-programmable gate array (FPGA) equipment running
at high implementation frequencies. The integrated control
system allows the implementation of online customizable
controllers, and raster-scans in two modes at very high
detection bandwidth and nano-precision. Robust control
algorithms are designed, implemented, and practically assessed.
The two realized scanning modes are experimentally
evaluated by imaging nano-spheres with known dimensions

Optimisation of a nano-positioning stage for a Transverse Dynamic Force Microscope

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.This paper describes the optimisation of a nano-positioning stage for a Transverse Dynamic Force Microscope (TDFM). The nano-precision stage is required to move a specimen dish within a horizontal region of 1 μm × 1 μm and with a resolution of 0.3 nm. The design objective was to maximise positional accuracy during high speed actuation. This was achieved by minimising out-of-plane distortions and vibrations during actuation. Optimal performance was achieved through maximising out-of-plane stiffness through shape and material selection as well optimisation of the anchoring system. Several shape parameters were optimised including the shape of flexural beams and the shape of the dish holder. Physical prototype testing was an essential part of the design process to confirm the accuracy of modelling and also to reveal issues with manufacturing tolerances. An overall resonant frequency of 6 kHz was achieved allowing for a closed loop-control frequency of 1.73 kHz for precise horizontal motion control. This resonance represented a 12-fold increase from the original 500 Hz of a commercially available positioning stage. Experimental maximum out-of-plane distortions below the first resonance frequency were reduced from 0.3 μm for the first prototype to less than 0.05 μm for the final practical prototype
Real-time sliding mode observer scheme for shear force estimation in a transverse dynamic force microscope

shear force affecting the cantilever in a Transverse Dynamic Force Microscope
(TDFM). The vertically oriented cantilever is oscillated in proximity to the
specimen under investigation. The amplitude of oscillation of the cantilever
tip is affected by these shear forces. They are created by the ordered-water
layer above the specimen. The oscillation amplitude is therefore a measure
of distance between the tip and the surface of the specimen. Consequently,
the estimation of the shear forces provides useful information about the
specimen characteristics. For estimating the shear forces, an approximate
finite dimensional model of the cantilever is created using the method of
lines. This model is subsequently reduced for its model order. An unknown
input sliding mode observer has been used to reconstruct the unknown shear
forces using only tip position measurements and the cantilever excitation. This
paper describes the development of the sliding mode scheme and presents
experimental results from the TDFM set up at the Centre for Nanoscience and

Selective Metal Cation Capture by Soft Anionic Metal-Organic Frameworks via Drastic Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations
In this paper we describe a novel framework for the discovery of the topical
content of a data corpus, and the tracking of its complex structural changes
across the temporal dimension. In contrast to previous work our model does not
impose a prior on the rate at which documents are added to the corpus nor does
it adopt the Markovian assumption which overly restricts the type of changes
that the model can capture. Our key technical contribution is a framework based
on (i) discretization of time into epochs, (ii) epoch-wise topic discovery
using a hierarchical Dirichlet process-based model, and (iii) a temporal
similarity graph which allows for the modelling of complex topic changes:
emergence and disappearance, evolution, and splitting and merging. The power of
the proposed framework is demonstrated on the medical literature corpus
concerned with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - an increasingly important
research subject of significant social and healthcare importance. In addition
to the collected ASD literature corpus which we will make freely available, our
contributions also include two free online tools we built as aids to ASD
researchers. These can be used for semantically meaningful navigation and
searching, as well as knowledge discovery from this large and rapidly growing

Interventions to enhance adherence to medications in patients with heart failure: a systematic review
First paragraph: Prognosis remains poor for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), despite improvements in the prevention and treatment of heart failure over the last 25 years. Recent estimates indicate that the median survival after a first episode of heart failure is 2.3 years for men and 1.8 years for women. It is suggested that the improvements in outcomes that have been achieved can be partly explained by increases in prescribing rates of medications such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, β-blockers, and spironolactone over this period. Although the evidence on medication efficacy for certain subgroups of patients with CHF is clear, there are also compelling data showing that many of these patients do not take their medications as prescribed by health care providers. This "nonadherence" to medication therefore remains a significant barrier to enhancing the effectiveness of existing treatments
Risk of bias: a simulation study of power to detect study-level moderator effects in meta-analysis.
There are both theoretical and empirical reasons to believe that design and execution factors are associated with bias in controlled trials. Statistically significant moderator effects, such as the effect of trial quality on treatment effect sizes, are rarely detected in individual meta-analyses, and evidence from meta-epidemiological datasets is inconsistent. The reasons for the disconnect between theory and empirical observation are unclear. The study objective was to explore the power to detect study level moderator effects in meta-analyses. We generated meta-analyses using Monte-Carlo simulations and investigated the effect of number of trials, trial sample size, moderator effect size, heterogeneity, and moderator distribution on power to detect moderator effects. The simulations provide a reference guide for investigators to estimate power when planning meta-regressions. The power to detect moderator effects in meta-analyses, for example, effects of study quality on effect sizes, is largely determined by the degree of residual heterogeneity present in the dataset (noise not explained by the moderator). Larger trial sample sizes increase power only when residual heterogeneity is low. A large number of trials or low residual heterogeneity are necessary to detect effects. When the proportion of the moderator is not equal (for example, 25% 'high quality', 75% 'low quality' trials), power of 80% was rarely achieved in investigated scenarios. Application to an empirical meta-epidemiological dataset with substantial heterogeneity (I(2) = 92%, Ï„(2) = 0.285) estimated >200 trials are needed for a power of 80% to show a statistically significant result, even for a substantial moderator effect (0.2), and the number of trials with the less common feature (for example, few 'high quality' studies) affects power extensively. Although study characteristics, such as trial quality, may explain some proportion of heterogeneity across study results in meta-analyses, residual heterogeneity is a crucial factor in determining when associations between moderator variables and effect sizes can be statistically detected. Detecting moderator effects requires more powerful analyses than are employed in most published investigations; hence negative findings should not be considered evidence of a lack of effect, and investigations are not hypothesis-proving unless power calculations show sufficient ability to detect effects
Postural loads during walking after an imbalance of occlusion created with unilateral cotton rolls
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It was showed that stomatognathic functions correlate with alterations in locomotion, that are detectable through the analysis of loading during walking. For example, subjects with symptoms of Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) showed a significant higher load pressure on the two feet, respect to health subjects, when cotton rolls were inserted. This previous study appeared to suggest that the alteration of postural loads associated to a particular alteration of stomatognathic condition (in this case, the cotton rolls inserted between the two dental arches) is detectable only in TMD's subjects, while it resulted not detectable in health subjects, because in that study, health subjects did not show any significant alteration of postural loads related to the different stomatognathic tested conditions. In other words, in that previous study, in the group of health subjects, no significant difference in postural loads was observed among the different test conditions; while TMD subjects showed a significant higher load pressure on the two feet when cotton rolls were inserted, respect to all the other tested conditions. Thus, the aim of this study was to better investigate these correlations in health subjects without TMD's symptoms, testing other different intra-oral conditions, and to verifywhether an experimentally induced imbalance of occlusion, obtained putting an unilateral cotton roll, could cause an alteration of postural loading on feet during walking.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>In a sample of thirty Caucasian adult females (mean age 28.5 ± 4.5), asymptomatic for TMDs, when a cotton roll was positioned on the left or the right sides of dental arches, so causing a lateral shift of the mandible, the percentage of loading and the loading surface of the ipsi-lateral foot, left or right, were found to be significantly lower than in habitual occlusion (p < 0.05). Males were not included because of their different postural attitude respect to females. Further studies in a sample of males will be presented.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study showed that in health subjects without TMD's symptoms, an experimentally induced imbalance of the occlusion, obtained through an unilateral cotton roll, is associated to detectable alterations in the distribution of loading on feet surface, during walking.</p
A Qualitative Study of Perceived Risk for HIV Transmission among Police Officers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Understanding people's views about HIV transmission by investigating a specific population may help to design effective HIV prevention strategies. In addition, knowing the inherent sexual practices of such a population, as well as the risky circumstances that may facilitate HIV transmission, is crucial for the said strategies to become effective. In this article, we report how police officers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, perceived the problem of HIV and AIDS in their local context, particularly in relation to unsafe sexual practices. The study was done with the view to recommending ways by which HIV transmission could be minimised within the police force. The study was conducted among members of the police force in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Eight focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted, with a total of 66 participants who were mixed in terms of age, gender, and marital status. Some of these were caregivers to patients with AIDS. Data were analysed using the interpretive description approach. The participants believed that both individual sexual behaviour and work-related circumstances were sources of HIV infection. They also admitted that they were being tempted to engage in risky sexual practices because of the institutional rules that prohibit officers from getting married during their training and for three years after. Nevertheless, as members of the Police Force, they stressed the fact that the risky sexual behaviour that exposes them to HIV is not limited to the force; it is rather a common problem that is faced by the general population. However, they complained, the nature of their job exposes them to road accident victims, subjecting them further to possible infection, especially when they have to handle these road accident casualties without proper protective gear. Individual sexual behaviour and job-related circumstances are worth investigating if proper advice is to be given to the police regarding HIV prevention strategies. In order to improve the lives of these police officers, there is a need to review the existing institutional rules and practices to accommodate individual sexual needs. In addition, improving their working environment may minimize the risk of HIV transmission from handling casualties in emergency situations
Utilisation of sexual health services by female sex workers in Nepal
Background
The Nepal Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) in 2006 showed that more than half (56%) of the women with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, in Nepal sought sexual health services. There is no such data for female sex workers (FSWs) and the limited studies on this group suggest they do not even use routine health services. This study explores FSWs use of sexual health services and the factors associated with their use and non-use of services.
Methods
This study aimed to explore the factors associated with utilisation of sexual health services by FSWs in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, and it used a mixed-method
approach consisting of an interviewer administered questionnaire-based survey and in-depth interviews.
Results
The questionnaire survey, completed with 425 FSWs, showed that 90% FSWs self-reported sickness, and (30.8%) reported symptoms of STIs. A quarter (25%) of those reporting STIs had never visited any health facilities especially for sexual health services preferring to use non-governmental clinics (72%), private clinics (50%), hospital (27%)
and health centres (13%). Multiple regression analysis showed that separated, married and street- based FSWs were more likely to seek health services from the clinics or
hospitals. In- depth interviews with 15 FSWs revealed that FSWs perceived that personal, structural and socio-cultural barriers, such as inappropriate clinic opening hours,
discrimination, the judgemental attitude of the service providers, lack of confidentiality, fear of public exposure, and higher fees for the services as barriers to their access and utilisation of sexual health services.
Conclusion
FSWs have limited access to information and to health services, and operate under personal, structural and socio-cultural constraints. The ‘education’ to change individual behaviour, health worker and community perceptions, as well as the training of the health workers, is necessary
