    With or without you: models of urban requalification under neoliberalismo in Portugal

    Operations of urban renewal that focus upon issues of physical refurbishment are often presented as a contribution to social inclusion, via the improvement of housing and neighbourhood conditions. However, when the upgrading of the existing building stock leads to the reduction of affordable dwellings for low-income families, with housing costs increasing faster than household incomes, therefore exceeding what families can afford, different forms of displacement take place and expose resident families to several forms of social and spatial exclusion. Our aim in this chapter is to critically analyse the statutory model of urban renewal set up by the Portuguese government in 2004 and implemented locally ever since. The results show that the SRU model is reshaping former working-class districts, with a legacy of affordable private rented housing, into spaces of tourism and consumption. It also shows that this model strongly contrasts with those used in previous decades that aimed to maintain and assist poor families which, in a context of globalization and financialization in which housing is seen as a commodity and a speculative investment, is reinforcing trends of urban social and spatial inequality

    Current pharmacological treatment of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies

    The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are uncommon and heterogeneous disorders. Their classification is based on distinct clinicopathologic features. Although idiopathic inflammatory myopathies share some similarities, different subtypes may have variable responses to therapy, so it is very important to distinguish the correct subtype. There are few randomised, double blind placebo controlled studies to support the current treatment. High dose corticosteroids continue to be the first-line therapy and other immunosupressive drugs are used in refractory cases, as well as steroid-sparing agents. Some novel therapeutic approaches have emerged as potential treatment including tacrolimus, intravenous immunoglobulin and rituximab, following good outcomes reported in case studies. However, more randomised controlled trials are needed. This review considers the current and the potential future therapies for inflammatory myopathies

    Adaptation and learning processes of stroke survivors and family carers: a scoping review

    Background. Knowledge on the processes of adaptation and learning after stroke are scarce, hindering the development of evidence-based public health strategies to promote survivors and family carers' health and wellbeing, across the post stroke trajectory. This study aims to assess the available evidence on the processes of adaptation and learning after stroke, by mapping the main barriers and enablers according to the perspectives of stroke survivors and family carers. Methods. A scoping review was performed, following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The electronic databases PubMed, ISI Web of Science, PsycINFO and SciELO were searched for empirical, peer-reviewed, original, and full-length studies on the processes of adaptation and learning of stroke survivors and family carers, in March 2021. Eligibility and data extraction were conducted by two independent researchers. The main qualitative data were explored by thematic content analysis and quantitative findings were synthesized. Results. The included studies, 29 qualitative and 1 quantitative, were published between 1994 and 2019. Most of the studies were carried out with small samples and without a specific focus on the adaptation and learning processes after stroke. Barriers and enablers to stroke adaptation and learning processes were influenced by physical, psychological and social characteristics. The poor physical and functional status of survivors, the inability to maintaining the Activities of Daily Living, emotional disturbances, lack of support and information, and changes in roles, were identify as main barriers to stroke adaptation. Using coping strategies and having psychological, educational, and financial support were described as enablers. Conclusions. Public health policies and practices should consider the physical, psychological and social barriers and enablers to the stroke adaptation and learning processes to ensure a high-quality long-term care centred on survivors and family carers

    Self-Insertion of Foreign Bodies in Urethra and Bladder: Report of Three Pediatric Cases

    Self-inserted urethrovesical foreign bodies are rare in children.We present three cases and discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of such patients. In case 1, a 16-year-old boy introduced a wire into the urethra and partially into the bladder three days before. In case 2, a 4-year-old boy introduced a hairpin in the urethra in the same day. In case 3, a 11-year-old boy introduced a sewing needle in the urethra a few hours before. Cystourethroscopy and suprapubic cystotomy were used to remove the foreign bodies. The presentation of urethrovesical foreign bodies can vary widely, as can the type of object inserted. Foreign body retrieval is determined by its morphology and the patient’s conditions with the aim to minimise urothelial trauma and preserve erectile function. Definitive treatment is usually the endoscopic removal, however sometimes surgical intervention may be required.     This report investigates the climate of two target regions of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS): Central and South America (CA and SA, respectively). The report assesses the implications of climate change for agriculture, with a particular focus on those aspects of climate change that will have greatest impact on the crops currently grown in each region. The study investigated the ability of General Circulation Models (GCMs) and downscaled climate change scenarios to reproduce already observed climates, to establish the reliability of future climate projections, as well as projections of how associated crops might grow under future conditions

    Accuracy and simultaneous selection gains for grain yield and earliness in tropical maize lines

    Winter maize is sown between January and March in Brazil. Although this maize is sown in unfavorable weather conditions, many farmers are successful, and winter maize has become an important crop. The sowing of early hybrids is a strategy to reduce the effects of stress on yield; however, low yields may result from earliness. Thus, the objectives in this study were to investigate tropical maize lines for the possibility of simultaneous selection for yield and earliness and to compare the differences among the simultaneous selection methods. Therefore, 64 lines were evaluated in two locations for grain yield, days to female flowering and grain moisture at harvest. The genotypic values for these traits were predicted using Restricted Maximum Likelihood/Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (REML/BLUP) single-trait (univariate) and multi-trait (multivariate) methods. Using three simultaneous selection methods (i.e., Additive index, Mulamba-Mock index and Independent culling levels) with two methods of prediction for genotypic values (single-trait and multi-trait), six simultaneous selection scenarios were considered and then compared for selection gains and accuracy. Because of the low correlation between these traits, the pre- dictions of genotypic values were similar for single-trait and multi-trait methods. Thus, single-trait analysis should be prioritized because of its practicality. The Additive index obtained the highest selection gain for grain yield and simultaneously achieved good gains for days to female flowering and grain moisture at harvest. Therefore, the Additive index, using the single-trait prediction method, is the best simultaneous selection method for yield and earliness in tropical maize lines

    Exploring the physiological role of transthyretin in glucose metabolism in the liver

    Transthyretin (TTR), a 55 kDa evolutionarily conserved protein, presents altered levels in several conditions, including malnutrition, inflammation, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease. It has been shown that TTR is involved in several functions, such as insulin release from pancreatic ß-cells, recovery of blood glucose and glucagon levels of the islets of Langerhans, food intake, and body weight. Here, the role of TTR in hepatic glucose metabolism was explored by studying the levels of glucose in mice with different TTR genetic backgrounds, namely with two copies of the TTR gene, TTR+/+; with only one copy, TTR+/-; and without TTR, TTR-/-. Results showed that TTR haploinsufficiency (TTR+/-) leads to higher glucose in both plasma and in primary hepatocyte culture media and lower expression of the influx glucose transporters, GLUT1, GLUT3, and GLUT4. Further, we showed that TTR haploinsufficiency decreases pyruvate kinase M type (PKM) levels in mice livers, by qRT-PCR, but it does not affect the hepatic production of the studied metabolites, as determined by 1H NMR. Finally, we demonstrated that TTR increases mitochondrial density in HepG2 cells and that TTR insufficiency triggers a higher degree of oxidative phosphorylation in the liver.     Spin Discrimination in Three-Body Decays

    The identification of the correct model for physics beyond the Standard Model requires the determination of the spin of new particles. We investigate to which extent the spin of a new particle XX can be identified in scenarios where it decays dominantly in three-body decays XffˉYX\to f\bar{f} Y. Here we assume that YY is a candidate for dark matter and escapes direct detection at a high energy collider such as the LHC. We show that in the case that all intermediate particles are heavy, one can get information on the spins of XX and YY at the LHC by exploiting the invariant mass distribution of the two standard model fermions. We develop a model-independent strategy to determine the spins without prior knowledge of the unknown couplings and test it in a series of Monte Carlo studies.Comment: 31+1 pages, 4 figures, 8 tables, JHEP.cls include

    Hyperoside Supplementation in Preservation Media Surpasses Vitamin C Protection Against Oxidative Stress-Induced Damages in Human Spermatozoa

    Background/Aims: Oxidative Stress (OS) is reported as one of the main causes of male infertility. Infertile couples often resort to assisted reproductive technology (ART) to achieve parenthood. However, preparation for ART protocols increases the exposer of gametes to OS. Thus, it is crucial to find suitable preservation media that can counteract the OS-induced damages in spermatozoa. In this work, we tested and compared the efficiency of vitamin C (VC) and hyperoside (HYP) as potential antioxidant supplements for sperm preservation media. Methods: We evaluated the cytotoxicity of HYP (0, 5, 50, 100, and 500 µM) in spermatozoa. After incubation of sperm cells with VC (600 µM) and HYP (100 and 500 µM), in the presence and absence of H2O2 (300 µM), the following parameters were assessed: total sperm motility and vitality, OS biomarkers expression, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the media, percentage of DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and metabolite quantification of the media by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). Results: The supplementation with VC (600 µM) and HYP (100 and 500 µM) did not induce any deleterious effects to the physiology and metabolism of the spermatozoa, after 1-hour of treatment. In the presence of H2O2 (300 µM), both VC and HYP were able to prevent some of the deleterious effects of H2O2 in sperm, which were represented by an increase in sperm motility, a decrease in DNA fragmentation, and a decreasing trend in lipid peroxidation levels. However, these antioxidants were not able to prevent the decrease of MMP associated with H2O2 treatment, nor were able to prevent the conversion of pyruvate into acetate (a reaction promoted by H2O2). Conclusion: The supplementation of sperm preservation media with VC and HYP could be beneficial for the preservation of sperm physiology. From the antioxidant conditions tested, the supplementation of media with HYP (100 µM) demonstrated the best results regarding sperm preservation, evidencing the higher antioxidant capacity of HYP compared to VC. Nevertheless, none of the antioxidants used was able to prevent the metabolic alterations promoted by H2O2 in spermatozoa.This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - FCT to Sara C.
