How a Reduction of Standard Working Hours Affects Employment Dynamics
On December 1, 1996, a new law was implemented in Portugal to gradually reduce the stan- dard working week from 44 to 40 hours. We study how this mandatory reduction affected employment through job creation and job destruction. How Working Time Reduction Affects Employment and Earnings
December 1, 1996 Portugal introduced a new law on working hours which gradually reduced the standard workweek from 44 hours to 40 hours. We study how this mandatory working hours reduction affected employment and earnings of workers involved. We find for workers who were affected by the new law that working hours decreased, while hourly wages increased, keeping monthly earnings approximately constant. We also find that the working hours reduction did not lead to an increased job loss of workers directly affected. Finally, we find that workers who themselves were not directly affected were influenced by the working hours reduction indirectly. If they worked in a firm with many workers working more than 40 hours before the change in law was introduced.Workweek reduction;policy reform;employment dynamics;earnings
Neutral minima in two-Higgs doublet models
We study the neutral minima of two-Higgs doublet models, showing that these
potentials can have at least two such minima with different depths. We analyse
the phenomenology of these minima for the several types of two-Higgs doublet
potentials, where CP is explicitly broken, spontaneously broken or preserved.
We discover that it is possible to have a neutral minimum in these potentials
where the masses of the known particles have their standard values, with
another deeper minimum where those same particles acquire different masses.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
Dinosaur tracks from the Early Cretaceous (Albian) of Parede (Cascais, Portugal): new contributions for the sauropod palaeobiology of the Iberian Peninsula
A recently discovered Early Cretaceous (early late Albian) dinosaur tracksite at Parede beach (Cascais, Portugal) reveals evidence of dinoturbation and at least two sauropod trackways. One of these trackways can be classified as narrow-gauge, which represents unique evidence in the Albian of the Iberian Peninsula and provides for the improvement of knowledge of this kind of trackway and its probable trackmaker, in an age when the sauropod record is scarce. These dinosaur tracks are preserved on the upper surface of a marly limestone bed that belongs to the Galé Formation (Água Doce Member, middle to lower upper Albian). The study of thin-sections of the beds C22/24 and C26 in the Parede section has revealed a microfacies composed of foraminifers, radiolarians, ostracods, corals, bivalves, gastropods, and echinoids in a mainly wackestone texture with biomicritic matrix. These assemblages match with the lithofacies, marine molluscs, echinids, and ichnofossils sampled from the section and indicate a shallow marine, inner shelf palaeoenvironment with a shallowing-upward trend. The biofacies and the sequence analysis are compatible with the early late Albian age attributed to the tracksite. These tracks and the moderate dinoturbation index indicate sauropod activity in this palaeoenvironment. Titanosaurs can be dismissed as possible trackmakers on the basis of the narrow-gauge trackway, and probably by the kidney-shaped manus morphology and the pes-dominated configuration of the trackway. Narrow-gauge sauropod trackways have been positively associated with coastal palaeoenvironments, and the Parede tracksite supports this interpretation. In addition, this tracksite adds new data about the presence of sauropod pes-dominated trackways in cohesive substrates. As the Portuguese Cretaceous sauropod osteological remains are very scarce, the Parede tracksite yields new and relevant evidence of these dinosaurs. Furthermore, the Parede tracksite is the youngest evidence of sauropods in the Portuguese record and some of the rare evidence of sauropods in Europe during the Albian. This discovery enhances the palaeobiological data for the Early Cretaceous Sauropoda of the Iberian Peninsula, where the osteological remains of these dinosaurs are relatively scarce in this region of southwestern Europe. Therefore, this occurrence is also of overall interest due to its impact on Cretaceous Sauropoda palaeobiogeography.El reciente descubrimiento de huellas de dinosaurios del Cretácico Inferior (inicio del Albiense tardío) en la playa de Parede (Cascais, Portugal) ha revelado evidencias de dinoturbación y al menos dos rastros de saurópodos. Uno de ellos puede clasificarse como estrecho y representa la única evidencia de este tipo de rastros en el Albiense de la Península Ibérica. Estos nuevos datos permiten mejorar el conocimiento tanto de este tipo de rastros como de su posible productor, en una edad en la que el registro de saurópodos es escaso. Las huellas de dinosaurios se localizan en un nivel de caliza margosa perteneciente a la Formación Galé (Miembro Água Doce, Albiense medio-base del superior). El estudio de láminas delgadas de los niveles C22/24 y C26 de la sección estratigráfica de Parede ha mostrado ricas biomicrofacies compuestas por foraminíferos, radiolarios, ostrácodos, corales, bivalvos, gasterópodos y equinoideos, mayoritariamente en textura “wackestone” con matriz biomicrítica. Estas asociaciones coinciden con las litofacies, los moluscos marinos, los equínidos y los icnofósiles obtenidos en la sección, y corresponden a un paleoambiente marino somero de plataforma interna con tendencia somerizante hacia techo. Las biofacies y el análisis secuencial resultan compatibles con la edad del inicio del Albiense tardío atribuida al yacimiento. Estas huellas y el moderado índice de dinoturbación son indicadores de la actividad de saurópodos en este paleoambiente. En base a la estrechez del rastro, probablemente a la morfología arriñonada/semicircular de la mano y al hecho que se trata de un rastro “pes-dominated”, pueden descartarse a los titanosaurios como posibles productores. Los rastros estrechos han sido relacionados con paleoambientes costeros, y el yacimiento de Parede sustenta esta interpretación. Además, este yacimiento proporciona nuevos datos sobre la presencia de rastros de tipo “pes-dominated” en substratos cohesivos. Los restos osteológicos de saurópodos cretácicos portugueses son muy escasos, aportando el yacimiento de Parede una nueva y relevante evidencia de estos dinosaurios. Asimismo, el yacimiento de Parede constituye el hallazgo más moderno de saurópodos en el registro portugués, y una de las pocas evidencias de saurópodos en Europa durante el Albiense. Este descubrimiento incrementa los datos paleobiogeográficos de Sauropoda en el Cretácico Inferior en la Península Ibérica, en un período de tiempo en el que los restos de estos dinosaurios son escasos en esta región del Suroeste de Europa. Por tanto, este hallazgo muestra un elevado interés debido a su trascendencia para la paleobiogeografía de Sauropoda en el Cretácico
The impact of deep-sea fisheries and implementation of the UNGA Resolutions 61/105 and 64/72. Report of an international scientific workshop
The scientific workshop to review fisheries management, held in Lisbon in May 2011, brought together 22 scientists and fisheries experts from around the world to consider the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolutions on high seas bottom fisheries: what progress has been made and what the outstanding issues are. This report summarises the workshop conclusions, identifying examples of good practice and making recommendations in areas where it was agreed that the current management measures fall short of their target
Two-particle localization and antiresonance in disordered spin and qubit chains
We show that, in a system with defects, two-particle states may experience
destructive quantum interference, or antiresonance. It prevents an excitation
localized on a defect from decaying even where the decay is allowed by energy
conservation. The system studied is a qubit chain or an equivalent spin chain
with an anisotropic () exchange coupling in a magnetic field. The chain
has a defect with an excess on-site energy. It corresponds to a qubit with the
level spacing different from other qubits. We show that, because of the
interaction between excitations, a single defect may lead to multiple localized
states. The energy spectra and localization lengths are found for
two-excitation states. The localization of excitations facilitates the
operation of a quantum computer. Analytical results for strongly anisotropic

Amplification of evanescent waves in a lossy left-handed material slab
We carry out finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, with a
specially-designed boundary condition, on pure evanescent waves interacting
with a lossy left-handed material (LHM) slab. Our results provide the first
full-wave numerical evidence for the amplification of evanescent waves inside a
LHM slab of finite absorption. The amplification is due to the interactions
between the evanescent waves and the coupled surface polaritons at the two
surfaces of the LHM slab and the physical process can be described by a simple

Apesar do crescente interesse pela agricultura orgânica, são poucas as informações de pesquisa disponíveis sobre o assunto. Assim, num Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico foram comparados os efeitos de sistemas de cultivo orgânico e convencional, para as culturas do tomate (Lycopersicum esculentum) e do milho (Zea mays), sobre a comunidade de organismos do solo e suas atividades. As populações de fungos,bactérias e actinomicetos, determinadas pela contagem de colônias em meio de cultura, foram semelhantes para os dois sistemas de produção. A atividade microbiana, avaliada pela evolução de CO2, manteve-se superior no sistema orgânico, sendo que em determinadas avaliações foi o dobro da evolução verificada no sistema convencional. O número de espécimes de minhoca foi praticamente dez vezes maior no sistema orgânico. Não foi observada diferença na taxa de decomposição de matéria orgânica entre os dois sistemas. De modo geral, o número de indivíduos de microartrópodos foi superior no sistema orgânico do que no sistema convencional, refletindo no maior índice de diversidade de Shannon. As maiores populações de insetos foram as da ordem Collembola, enquanto para os ácaros a maior população foi a da superfamília Oribatuloidea. Indivíduos dos grupos Aranae, Chilopoda, Dyplopoda, Pauropoda, Protura e Symphyla foram ocasionalmente coletados e de forma similar entre os sistemas
Efecto del paisaje y del manejo del olivar sobre la polilla del olivo Prays oleae (Bernard)
El manejo del paisaje y los cultivos puede constituir una herramienta importante para la
implementación de estrategias de control biológico por conservación, como consecuencia de la
contribución que el uso de diseños paisajísticos adecuados y la aplicación de determinados
manejos pueden representar en el incremento de las necesidades y la acción de los enemigos
naturales. En el presente trabajo fue realizado un estudio multi-escala sobre el efecto de la
estructura del paisaje y el manejo del cultivo en la polilla del olivo, Prays oleae. Para ello, se
analizó: (i) la respuesta de la plaga a la estructura del paisaje a diferentes escalas usando como
variables explicativas diferentes índices de composición y configuración del paisaje previamente
seleccionados; (ii) la respuesta de la plaga al manejo de olivar (integrado y orgánico). El análisis
fue realizado mediante modelos aditivos generalizados mixtos. Los resultados indicaron que
varios índices de composición del paisaje (índices de biodiversidad, presencia de matorrales y de
otros cultivos) influenciaron negativamente la abundancia de la polilla del olivo siendo el efecto
menor a escalas mayores. Sin embargo, el efecto de los índices de configuración no fue
concluyente. La latitud y probablemente las diferencias climáticas se mostraron determinantes en
la abundancia de la polilla del olivo. El manejo del cultivo sin embargo no afectó a la plaga. Por
tanto, los diseños de la composición del paisaje a pequeña escala parecen ser cruciales para el
control de la polilla del olivo. Cabe destacar que la configuración y el manejo a escalas mayores
podrían ser importantes para otras plagas y enemigos naturales, debiendo tenerse en

A mathematical analysis of the evolution of perturbations in a modified Chaplygin gas model
One approach in modern cosmology consists in supposing that dark matter and
dark energy are different manifestations of a single `quartessential' fluid.
Following such idea, this work presents a study of the evolution of
perturbations of density in a flat cosmological model with a modified Chaplygin
gas acting as a single component. Our goal is to obtain properties of the model
which can be used to distinguish it from another cosmological models which have
the same solutions for the general evolution of the scale factor of the
universe, without the construction of the power spectrum. Our analytical
results, which alone can be used to uniquely characterize the specific model
studied in our work, show that the evolution of the density contrast can be
seen, at least in one particular case, as composed by a spheroidal wave
function. We also present a numerical analysis which clearly indicates as one
interesting feature of the model the appearence of peaks in the evolution of
