Waterfront Architectures: A comparative analysis between Lisbon and Trieste

    Get PDF
The relationship between the city and the water has always been very close, being in some cases the reason for the origin and development of the territory. The proximity to the seaside it took to the development of commercial ports, which allowed the growth of the city they served. In this sense, the ports were, for a long time, the geographical and functional centre of the city, being the quay the centre of the structure of the urban fabrics. Thus, the quay was the main urban public space. The transformation of port activity resulting from industrialisation contributed to landfills and new waterfront architectures. In this sense, our research focuses on the comparative analysis between Praça do Comércio, in Lisboa (Portugal), and Piazza dell' Unità d'Italia, in Trieste (Italy). Keywords: Waterfronts; Port Cities; Architecture; Public SpaceeISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019.

73 Tourism & Management Studies, 10(1) 2014 Influential factors in the competitiveness of mature tourism destinations Os fatores que influenciam a competitividade dos destinos turísticos maduros Margarida Custódio Santos University of the Algarve, School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism, Campus da Penha, 35, 8005-139, Faro, Portugal, [email protected] Ana Maria Ferreira University of Évora, Department of Sociology, 7004-516, Évora, Portugal, [email protected] Carlos Costa University of Aveiro, Department of Economics, Management and Industrial Engineering, GOVCOPP, 3810-193, Aveiro, Portugal, [email protected] Abstract With a few exceptions, the traditional models that aim at identifying the factors that influence the competitiveness of tourism destinations are very difficult to operationalise because they need a large number of indicators to inform the concepts. This paper presents a different approach that postulates that researchers should try to identify the specific factors that impact competitiveness of tourism destinations according to the stage of the destinations’ life cycle. With the aim of identifying these specific factors, an extensive literature review was undertaken, focusing in particular on the papers that explicitly recognised that the destinations under analysis in the studies were in the mature stage of their lifecycle. From the literature review, we concluded that the specific factors able to negatively influence the performance of mature tourism destinations can be grouped into four areas. The first area concerns the deterioration of the destinations’ infrastructure; the second is related to the destinations’ management, namely the lack of a shared strategic vision among stakeholders; the third area is associated with the loss of economic vitality in the destinations; finally, the fourth area includes the impact of tourism development over the years on the territory, specifically social, environmental and cultural impacts. The results obtained from the empirical study allow us to conclude that the lack of environmental problems, not being overdeveloped in terms of construction and having maintained authenticity are all perceived by tourists as more important for the competitiveness of tourism destinations than factors normally considered more relevant, such as prices and the quality of accommodations

Personal argumention in the scholarly publication

UIDB/04647/2020 UIDP/04647/2020Currently, the journals in the field of social sciences seem to emphasize the preference that authors submit for evaluation and publication manuscripts in the form of research articles with empirical data, following the model of exact sciences and, preferably, with the possibility of research replication. The scholarly publication based on reasoned logical argumentation seems to be increasingly relegated to the sidelines. This letter argues that questioning preconceived ideas and contributing to thinking is critical and that its publication, after the quality and relevance of personal argumentation is assessed, should take place even without respecting the replication of the research model.publishersversionpublishe

Contributions of Ivan Illich to Education in a Digital Society

Ivan Illich was a heavy critic of traditional schooling. His proposals were disregarded, perhaps too quickly, for various reasons. This paper, based on review research, aims to add to a current (re)reading of Illich, seeking to answer the following question: what is the relevance of Illich’s proposal for a successful education in an increasingly digitalised society? The results of this research allow concluding, on the one hand, that Illich’s proposal to replace strict schooling with (self)training networks in a society that is increasingly digitalised and linked by the internet may offer potential benefits, and it is worth, at least, of an in-depth analysis. On the other hand, provocative scholars that allow us to get out of any ideologically and socially delimited system have the merit of helping to provide instruments that enable a better understanding of the present and, consequently, a rationale for the options for the future. Ivan Illich is one of these scholars

    Writing in science

UIDB/04647/2020 UIDP/04647/2020Scientific knowledge entails rigour and control, both as a process of creating a reasoned view of reality and also as the product of results that shape the dissemination of science. The publication is critical for the development of science and the career of the academic/scientist. This article discusses some aspects of writing in science, in a stance that starts from the authors' scientific area - Sociology/Social Sciences -, using the scientific publication in specialized journals as a paradigmatic case. The results allow concluding that writing in science does not provide the indication of principles to be pursued and that it is shaped as more than rigid self-sufficient rules for the production of a scientific-type text. This topic is particularly relevant in the current context, in which the process of scientific publication is undergoing a profound reformulation.publishersversionpublishe
