Magnetic phase transitions in Gd64Sc36 studied using non-contact ultrasonics
The speed and attenuation of ultrasound propagation can be used to determine material properties and identify phase transitions. Standard ultrasonic contact techniques are not always convenient due to the necessity of using couplant; however, recently reliable non-contact ultrasonic techniques involving electromagnetic generation and detection of ultrasound with electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) have been developed for use on electrically conducting and/or magnetic materials. We present a detailed study of magnetic phase transitions in a single crystal sample of Gd64Sc36 magnetic alloy using contact and non-contact ultrasonic techniques for two orientations of external magnetic field. Phase diagrams are constructed based on measurements of elastic constant C33, the attenuation and the efficiency of generation when using an EMAT. The EMATs are shown to provide additional information related to the magnetic phase transitions in the studied sample, and results identify a conical helix phase in Gd64Sc36 in the magnetic field orientation
Square vortex solitons with a large angular momentum
We show the existence of square shaped optical vortices with a large value of
the angular momentum hosted in finite size laser beams which propagate in
nonlinear media with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The light profiles take the
form of rings with sharp boundaries and variable sizes depending on the power
carried. Our stability analysis shows that these light distributions remain
stable when propagate, probably for unlimited values of the angular momentum,
provided the hosting beam is wide enough. This happens if the peak amplitude
approaches a critical value which only depends on the nonlinear refractive
index of the material. A variational approach allows us to calculate the main
parameters involved. Our results add extra support to the concept of surface
tension of light beams that can be considered as a trace of the existence of a
liquid of light.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Continuous Infusion of Piperacillin/Tazobactam in Septic Critically Ill Patients - a Multicenter Propensity Matched Analysis
The clinical efficacy of continuous infusion of piperacillin/tazobactam in critically ill patients with microbiologically documented infections is currently unknown. We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study in 7 Portuguese intensive care units (ICU). We included 569 critically ill adult patients with a documented infection and treated with piperacillin/tazobactam admitted to one of the participating ICU between 2006 and 2010. We successfully matched 173 pairs of patients according to whether they received continuous or conventional intermittent dosing of piperacillin/tazobactam, using a propensity score to adjust for confounding variables. The majority of patients received 16g/day of piperacillin plus 2g/day of tazobactam. The 28-day mortality rate was 28.3% in both groups (p = 1.0). The ICU and in-hospital mortality were also similar either in those receiving continuous infusion or intermittent dosing (23.7% vs. 20.2%, p = 0.512 and 41.6% vs. 40.5%, p = 0.913, respectively). In the subgroup of patients with a Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II>42, the 28-day mortality rate was lower in the continuous infusion group (31.4% vs. 35.2%) although not reaching significance (p = 0.66). We concluded that the clinical efficacy of piperacillin/tazobactam in this heterogeneous group of critically ill patients infected with susceptible bacteria was independent of its mode of administration, either continuous infusion or intermittent dosing
Improved high-temperature expansion and critical equation of state of three-dimensional Ising-like systems
High-temperature series are computed for a generalized Ising model with
arbitrary potential. Two specific ``improved'' potentials (suppressing leading
scaling corrections) are selected by Monte Carlo computation. Critical
exponents are extracted from high-temperature series specialized to improved
potentials, achieving high accuracy; our best estimates are:
, , , ,
. By the same technique, the coefficients of the small-field
expansion for the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) are computed.
These results are applied to the construction of parametric representations of
the critical equation of state. A systematic approximation scheme, based on a
global stationarity condition, is introduced (the lowest-order approximation
reproduces the linear parametric model). This scheme is used for an accurate
determination of universal ratios of amplitudes. A comparison with other
theoretical and experimental determinations of universal quantities is
presented.Comment: 65 pages, 1 figure, revtex. New Monte Carlo data by Hasenbusch
enabled us to improve the determination of the critical exponents and of the
equation of state. The discussion of several topics was improved and the
bibliography was update
Vasodilator activity of extracts of field Alpinia purpurata (Vieill) K: Schum and A. zerumbet (Pers.) Burtt et Smith cultured in vitro
Nowadays, the high blood pressure is one of the main causes of death and cardiovascular diseases. Vasodilator drugs are frequently used to treat arterial hypertension. Experiments were undertaken to determine whether hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from leaves of field-grown Alpinia purpurata and A. zerumbet cultured in vitro under different plant growth regulators induce a vasodilator effect on Wistar rat mesenteric vascular bed pre-contracted with norepinephrine. Plant extracts were able to induce a long-lasting endothelium-dependent vasodilation. Efficiency on activity of A. purpurata reached 87% at concentration of 60 μg. The extract of A. zerumbet maintained in medium containing IAA, induced the relaxation (17.4%) at 90 μg, as compared to the control (MS0) that showed a better vasodilator effect (60%). These results are in agreement with the quantification of phenolic compounds in the extracts, which were 50% lower for those plants cultured in IAA. A. purpurata was assayed for the first time in relation to its vasodilator activity. This paper showed a strong probability of correlation between the pharmacological activities of A. purpurata with their content in phenolic compounds.

A high‐resolution view of the coordination environment in a paramagnetic metalloprotein from its magnetic properties
Metalloproteins constitute a significant fraction of the proteome of all organisms and their characterization is critical for both basic sciences and biomedical applications. A large portion of metalloproteins bind paramagnetic metal ions, and paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy has been widely used in their structural characterization. However, the signals of nuclei in the immediate vicinity of the metal center are often broadened beyond detection. In this work, we show that it is possible to determine the coordination environment of the paramagnetic metal in the protein at a resolution inaccessible to other techniques. Taking the structure of a diamagnetic analogue as a starting point, a geometry optimization is carried out by fitting the pseudocontact shifts obtained from first principles quantum chemical calculations to the experimental ones
Nursing Students’ Perceptions on Healthcare-Associated Infection Control and Prevention Teaching and Learning Experience in Portugal
Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are one of the major concerns worldwide, posing
significant challenges to healthcare professionals’ education and training. This study intended to
measure nursing students’ perceptions regarding their learning experiences on HAI prevention and
control. In the first phase of the study, a cross-sectional and descriptive study with a convenience
sample composed of undergraduate nursing students from Portugal, Spain, Poland, and Finland
was conducted to develop the InovSafeCare questionnaire. In the second phase, we applied the
InovSafeCare scale in a sample of nursing students from two Portuguese higher education institutions
to explore which factors impact nursing students’ adherence to HAI prevention and control measures
in clinical settings. In phase one, the InovSafeCare questionnaire was applied to 1326 students
internationally, with the instrument presenting adequate psychometric qualities with reliability
results in 14 dimensions. During phase two, the findings supported that Portuguese nursing students’
adherence to HAI prevention and control measures is influenced not only by the curricular offerings
and resources available in academic settings, but also by the standards conveyed by nursing tutors
during clinical placements. Our findings support the need for a dedicated curricular focus on HAI
prevention and control learning, not only through specific classroom modules, innovative resources,
and pedagogical approaches, but also through a complementary and coordinated liaison between
teachers and tutors in academic and clinical settings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
