Curvature Diffusions in General Relativity
We define and study on Lorentz manifolds a family of covariant diffusions in
which the quadratic variation is locally determined by the curvature. This
allows the interpretation of the diffusion effect on a particle by its
interaction with the ambient space-time. We will focus on the case of warped
products, especially Robertson-Walker manifolds, and analyse their asymptotic
behaviour in the case of Einstein-de Sitter-like manifolds.Comment: 34 page
Brane decay of a (4+n)-dimensional rotating black hole: spin-0 particles
In this work, we study the `scalar channel' of the emission of Hawking
radiation from a (4+n)-dimensional, rotating black hole on the brane. We
numerically solve both the radial and angular part of the equation of motion
for the scalar field, and determine the exact values of the absorption
probability and of the spheroidal harmonics, respectively. With these, we
calculate the particle, energy and angular momentum emission rates, as well as
the angular variation in the flux and power spectra -- a distinctive feature of
emission during the spin-down phase of the life of the produced black hole. Our
analysis is free from any approximations, with our results being valid for
arbitrarily large values of the energy of the emitted particle, angular
momentum of the black hole and dimensionality of spacetime. We finally compute
the total emissivities for the number of particles, energy and angular momentum
and compare their relative behaviour for different values of the parameters of

Energy conditions, traversable wormholes and dust shells
Firstly, we review the pointwise and averaged energy conditions, the quantum
inequality and the notion of the ``volume integral quantifier'', which provides
a measure of the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter.
Secondly, we present a specific metric of a spherically symmetric traversable
wormhole in the presence of a generic cosmological constant, verifying that the
null and the averaged null energy conditions are violated, as was to be
expected. Thirdly, a pressureless dust shell is constructed around the interior
wormhole spacetime by matching the latter geometry to a unique vacuum exterior
solution. In order to further minimize the usage of exotic matter, we then find
regions where the surface energy density is positive, thereby satisfying all of
the energy conditions at the junction surface. An equation governing the
behavior of the radial pressure across the junction surface is also deduced.
Lastly, taking advantage of the construction, specific dimensions of the
wormhole, namely, the throat radius and the junction interface radius, and
estimates of the total traversal time and maximum velocity of an observer
journeying through the wormhole, are also found by imposing the traversability

A scalar invariant and the local geometry of a class of static spacetimes
The scalar invariant, I, constructed from the "square" of the first covariant
derivative of the curvature tensor is used to probe the local geometry of
static spacetimes which are also Einstein spaces. We obtain an explicit form of
this invariant, exploiting the local warp-product structure of a 4-dimensional
static spacetime, , where is
the Riemannian hypersurface orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field with
norm given by a positive function, on . For a static
spacetime which is an Einstein space, it is shown that the locally measurable
scalar, I, contains a term which vanishes if and only if is
conformally flat; also, the vanishing of this term implies (a)
is locally foliated by level surfaces of , , which are totally
umbilic spaces of constant curvature, and (b) is locally a
warp-product space. Futhermore, if is conformally flat it
follows that every non-trivial static solution of the vacuum Einstein equation
with a cosmological constant, is either Nariai-type or Kottler-type - the

On the energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field on manifolds with boundaries
We argue that already at classical level the energy-momentum tensor for a
scalar field on manifolds with boundaries in addition to the bulk part contains
a contribution located on the boundary. Using the standard variational
procedure for the action with the boundary term, the expression for the surface
energy-momentum tensor is derived for arbitrary bulk and boundary geometries.
Integral conservation laws are investigated. The corresponding conserved
charges are constructed and their relation to the proper densities is
discussed. Further we study the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum
tensor in the corresponding quantum field theory. It is shown that the surface
term in the energy-momentum tensor is essential to obtain the equality between
the vacuum energy, evaluated as the sum of the zero-point energies for each
normal mode of frequency, and the energy derived by the integration of the
corresponding vacuum energy density. As an application, by using the zeta
function technique, we evaluate the surface energy for a quantum scalar field

The perseverance of Pacioli's goods inventory accounting system
This paper details sources of the 'undoubtedly strange' (Yamey, 1994a, p.119) system of goods inventory records described in Pacioli’s 1494 bookkeeping treatise and traces the longevity and widespread use of this early perpetual inventory recording (EPIR) system in English language texts. By doing so and contrasting this system with the bookkeeping treatment of modern texts, it is shown that the EPIR system persisted as the dominant form of goods inventory accounting for between 400 and 500 years and that the reasons for its demise are worthy of further consideration and research
Dynamic Scaling and Two-Dimensional High-Tc Superconductors
There has been ongoing debate over the critical behavior of two-dimensional
superconductors; in particular for high Tc superconductors. The conventional
view is that a Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition occurs as long as
finite size effects do not obscure the transition. However, there have been
recent suggestions that a different transition actually occurs which
incorporates aspects of both the dynamic scaling theory of Fisher, Fisher, and
Huse and the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition. Of general interest is
that this modified transition apparently has a universal dynamic critical
exponent. Some have countered that this apparent universal behavior is rooted
in a newly proposed finite-size scaling theory; one that also incorporates
scaling and conventional two-dimensional theory. To investigate these issues we
study DC voltage versus current data of a 12 angstrom thick YBCO film. We find
that the newly proposed scaling theories have intrinsic flexibility that is
relevant to the analysis of the experiments. In particular, the data scale
according to the modified transition for arbitrarily defined critical
temperatures between 0 K and 19.5 K, and the temperature range of a successful
scaling collapse is related directly to the sensitivity of the measurement.
This implies that the apparent universal exponent is due to the intrinsic
flexibility rather than some real physical property. To address this intrinsic
flexibility, we propose a criterion which would give conclusive evidence for
phase transitions in two-dimensional superconductors. We conclude by reviewing
results to see if our criterion is satisfied.Comment: 14 page
The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect
