    [[abstract]]In this brief, we propose the concept of "partial patterned ground shields (PGSs)" to improve the performances of RF passive devices, such as inductors and transformers. Partial PGS can be achieved after the redundant PGS of a traditional complete PGS, which is right below the spiral metal lines of an RF passive device, is removed for the purpose of reducing the large parasitic capacitance. A set of test transformers has been implemented to demonstrate the partial PGS. The results show that when the partial PGS was adopted, a 56.5% (from 6.12 to 9.58) and a 55.7% (from 5.55 to 8.64) increase in Q-factor, an 18.2% (from 0.67 to 0.79) and a 21.4% (from 0.66 to 0.8) increase in maximum available power gain (G(A) (max)), and an 18.4% (from 0.69 to 0.82) and a 21.2% (from 0.69 to 0.83) increase in magnetic-coupling factor (k(im)) were achieved at 4.2 and 5.2 GHz, respectively, for a bifilar transformer with an overall dimension of 230 x 215 mu m(2). Furthermore, compared with the transformer with traditional PGS, a 9.9% (from 10.1 to 11.1 GHz) increase in resonant frequency (f(SR)), a 38% (from 6.94 to 9.58) increase in Q-factor at 4.2 GHz, and a 5.3% (from 0.75 to 0.79) increase in G(A max) at 4.2 GHz were obtained.     An in-vitro animal bone model study to predict spiral fracture strength of long bones in the young infant

    Introduction The risk of fracture from a non-accidental injury is highest in the infant age group. A spiral fracture of the long bone can occur equally from accidental and non-accidental causes, meaning the clinical judgement of non-accidental injury in an infant is particularly challenging. This study aimed to assist in differentiating accidental, from non-accidental, injury in infants, by establishing whether correlation exists between geometry and torsional strength in the immature long bone. Methods Immature porcine third and fourth metacarpals (n = 21) were imaged with a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanner to measure their linear bone mineral content (BMCL), bone mineral density (BMD) and section modulus (Z). The specimens were then subjected to a torque of one degree per second until failure. The failure strength and the three DEXA measures were analyzed for a correlation. Results The mean failure strength of 11 successful tests was 13.71Nm (+/-SD 2.42Nm), with correlation to BMCL, BMD and Z described by r2 = 0.81, 0.283 and 0.75 respectively. Conclusion This study is a novel attempt at estimating torsional strength of long bones in a specific paediatric age group using a size-matched animal bone model. It found a strong correlation between bone and fracture strength parameters over the BMCL range of 0.59–0.77 g/cm

    Thermal, electrochemical and mechanical properties of shape memory alloy developed by a conventional processing route

    A Cu based shape memory alloy (Cu-Al-Ni) having a composition 83% Cu, 14% Al, 3% Ni, was developed and studied to determine the shape memory effect. Powder of Cu, Al and Ni was melted in a pit furnace at about 15500C, and casted alloy was heat treated at 8500C for a period of 50 minutes followed by water quenching. Microstructure characterization of alloy (Cu-Al-Ni) was carried out to determine the pre-quenched (cast structure) and quenched martensitic structure. The microstructure analysis of developed samples showed needle like structure of quenched martensite after heat treatment. It has a very good resemblance with structure of casted shape memory alloy obtained from the vacuum induction process. The Vickers hardness test was also performed. Quenched microstructure with improved hardness than pre-quenched structure was observed.Keywords: Shape Memory Alloy, Microstructure, Mechanical Propertie

    Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Methanolic Extracts of Salix alba L. Against Various Disease Causing Pathogens

    The present study was aimed to manifest the antibacterial and antifungal activity of methanolic extracts of Salix alba L. against seven Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial pathogens e.g. Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus (1), S. aureus (2), Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli (1), E. coli (2) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae and three fungal isolates from the air such as Aspergillus terreus, A. ornatus, and Rhizopus stolonifer. Two different serotypes of S. aureus and E. coli were used. The agar well-diffusion method results showed the dose-dependent response of plant extracts against bacterial and fungal strains while some organisms were found resistant e.g. E. coli (1), S. sonnei, A. terreus and R. stolonifer. The highest antibacterial activity was recorded at 17.000±1.732 mm from 100 mg/mL of leaves methanolic extracts against S. pyogenes while the activity of most of the pathogens decreased after 24 h of incubation. The highest antifungal activity was reported at 11.833±1.0 mm against A. ornatus at 50 mg/mL after 48 h of the incubation period. These experimental findings endorse the use of S. alba in ethnopharmacological formulations and suggest the use of methanolic extracts of the said plant to develop drugs to control the proliferation of resistant disease causing pathogenic microbes

    Spontaneous heavy cluster emission rates using microscopic potentials

    The nuclear cluster radioactivities have been studied theoretically in the framework of a microscopic superasymmetric fission model (MSAFM). The nuclear interaction potentials required for binary cold fission processes are calculated by folding in the density distribution functions of the two fragments with a realistic effective interaction. The microscopic nuclear potential thus obtained has been used to calculate the action integral within the WKB approximation. The calculated half lives of the present MSAFM calculations are found to be in good agreement over a wide range of observed experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Halogen-free flame-retardant compounds. Thermal decomposition and flammability behavior for alternative polyethylene grades

    The effect of six halogen-free flame retardant (FR) formulations was investigated on the thermal stability of two low-density polyethylenes (LDPE) and one linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen and air atmosphere. The relative data were combined with flammability properties and the overall performance of the FRs was correlated with the type of branching in the polyethylene grades and to their processing behavior. The thermal degradation kinetics was further determined based on the Kissinger and Coats-Redfern methods. In terms of flammability, the addition of a triazine derivative and ammonium polyphosphate at a loading of 35 wt. %. was found to be the most efficient, leading to UL 94 V0 ranking in the case of the LDPE grade produced in an autoclave reactor. - 2019 by the authors.Funding: This publication was made possible by the NPRP award [NPRP 9-161-1-030] from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of The Qatar Foundation).     Human intestinal anion exchanger isoforms: expression, distribution, and membrane localization

    AbstractA family of anion exchangers (AEs) including AE1, AE2 and AE3 has been described. AE3 gene has been shown to encode two alternatively spliced isoforms termed as bAE3 (brain subtype) and cAE3 (cardiac subtype). The identity of the AE(s) involved in the human intestinal NaCl absorption is not fully understood. Current studies were undertaken to identify the AE isoforms expressed in the human intestine, to define their regional and vertical axis (crypt vs. surface cells) distribution, and to elucidate their membrane localization in the epithelial cells along the entire length of the human intestine. Our studies utilizing reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with total RNA extracted from pinch biopsies from various regions of the human intestine demonstrate that AE2 and bAE3 but not AE1 or cAE3 were expressed in all the regions of the human intestine. Utilizing in situ RT-PCR, we demonstrated that the message of AE2 was expressed throughout the vertical surface–crypt axis of the colon. Our Western blotting studies demonstrated that AE2 and bAE3 are localized to the basolateral but not the apical membranes of the intestinal epithelial cells from the human ileum and colon. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that in the human intestine, AE2 and bAE3, but not AE1 or cAE3, are expressed throughout the tract with the highest expression in the colon compared to the ileum and jejunum. Both the isoforms were found to be localized to the basolateral but not the apical membranes of the epithelial cells. We speculate that, in the human intestine, AE2 and bAE3 may be the ‘housekeeping’ isoforms, and the apical AE, the potential candidate for chloride absorption, remains to be identified

    Measurements of the observed cross sections for e+ee^+e^-\to exclusive light hadrons containing π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 at s=3.773\sqrt s= 3.773, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV

    By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb1^{-1} taken, respectively, at s=3.773\sqrt s= 3.773, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for e+eπ+ππ0π0e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0, K+Kπ0π0K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0, 2(π+ππ0)2(\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0), K+Kπ+ππ0π0K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0 and 3(π+π)π0π03(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0\pi^0 at the three energy points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for ψ(3770)\psi(3770) decay into these final states at 90% C.L..Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi

    Using 5.8×107J/ψ5.8 \times 10^7 J/\psi events collected in the BESII detector, the radiative decay J/ψγϕϕγK+KKS0KL0J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi \to \gamma K^+ K^- K^0_S K^0_L is studied. The ϕϕ\phi\phi invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/c2c^{2}. A partial wave analysis shows that the structure is dominated by a 0+0^{-+} state (η(2225)\eta(2225)) with a mass of 2.240.02+0.030.02+0.032.24^{+0.03}_{-0.02}{}^{+0.03}_{-0.02} GeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 0.19±0.030.04+0.060.19 \pm 0.03^{+0.06}_{-0.04} GeV/c2c^{2}. The product branching fraction is: Br(J/ψγη(2225))Br(η(2225)ϕϕ)=(4.4±0.4±0.8)×104Br(J/\psi \to \gamma \eta(2225))\cdot Br(\eta(2225)\to \phi\phi) = (4.4 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. corrected proof for journa
