    Effect of time and storing conditions on iron forms in ferrous gluconate and Ascofer

    Antianemic medicament Ascofer and ferrous gluconate, its basic iron bearing ingredient, were studied with the use of Mossbauer spectroscopy. Room temperature spectra gave a clear evidence that two phases of iron were present viz. ferrous (Fe2+) as a major one with a contribution of 85+-5%, and ferric (Fe3+) whose contribution was found to be 15+-5%. However, the actual values of the contributions of the two kind of the iron ions in Ascofer depend on sample's age: the abundance of Fe2+ ions increases with time by 10% after 51 months, while that of Fe3+ decreases by the same amount. This means that an internal reduction of Fe3+ ions takes place. Ferrous ions were shown to occupy at least two different sites. In Ascofer, the relative abundance of the two sites does not depend on the age of sample, while in the gluconate the population of site 1 increases and that of site 2 decreases with the age of the sample.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

    Penicillin kills chlamydia following the fusion of bacteria with Lysosomes and prevents genital inflammatory lesions in C. muridarum-infected mice

    The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia exists as two distinct forms. Elementary bodies (EBs) are infectious and extra-cellular, whereas reticulate bodies (RBs) replicate within a specialized intracellular compartment termed an ‘inclusion’. Alternative persistent intra-cellular forms can be induced in culture by diverse stimuli such as IFNγ or adenosine/EHNA. They do not grow or divide but revive upon withdrawal of the stimulus and are implicated in several widespread human diseases through ill-defined in vivo mechanisms. β-lactam antibiotics have also been claimed to induce persistence in vitro. The present report shows that upon penicillin G (pG) treatment, inclusions grow as fast as those in infected control cells. After removal of pG, Chlamydia do not revert to RBs. These effects are independent of host cell type, serovar, biovar and species of Chlamydia. Time-course experiments demonstrated that only RBs were susceptible to pG. pG-treated bacteria lost their control over host cell apoptotic pathways and no longer expressed pre-16S rRNA, in contrast to persistent bacteria induced with adenosine/EHNA. Confocal and live-video microscopy showed that bacteria within the inclusion fused with lysosomal compartments in pG-treated cells. That leads to recruitment of cathepsin D as early as 3 h post pG treatment, an event preceding bacterial death by several hours. These data demonstrate that pG treatment of cultured cells infected with Chlamydia results in the degradation of the bacteria. In addition we show that pG is significantly more efficient than doxycycline at preventing genital inflammatory lesions in C. muridarum-C57Bl/6 infected mice. These in vivo results support the physiological relevance of our findings and their potential therapeutic applications

    The flat phase of fixed-connectivity membranes

    The statistical mechanics of flexible two-dimensional surfaces (membranes) appears in a wide variety of physical settings. In this talk we discuss the simplest case of fixed-connectivity surfaces. We first review the current theoretical understanding of the remarkable flat phase of such membranes. We then summarize the results of a recent large scale Monte Carlo simulation of the simplest conceivable discrete realization of this system \cite{BCFTA}. We verify the existence of long-range order, determine the associated critical exponents of the flat phase and compare the results to the predictions of various theoretical models.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables.     We report the status of a high-statistics Monte Carlo simulation of non-self-avoiding crystalline surfaces with extrinsic curvature on lattices of size up to 1282128^2 nodes. We impose free boundary conditions. The free energy is a gaussian spring tethering potential together with a normal-normal bending energy.     Anomalous behavior of the Debye temperature in Fe-rich Fe-Cr alloys

    Debye temperature, ΘD\Theta_D, of Fe-rich Fe100−x_{100-x}Crx_x disordered alloys with 0≤x≤22.30\le x \le 22.3 was determined from the temperature dependence of the central shift of M\"ossbauer spectra recorded in the temperature range of 60 -- 300 K. Its compositional dependence shows a maximum at x≈5x \approx 5 with a relative increase of ∼30\sim 30% compared to a pure iron. The composition at which the effect occurs correlates well with that at which several other quantities, e. g. the Curie temperature and the spin-wave stiffness coefficient, D0D_0, show their maxima, but the enhancement of ΘD\Theta_D is significantly greater and comparable with the enhancement of the hyperfine field (spin-density of itinerant ss-like electrons) in the studied system. The results suggest that the electron-phonon interaction is important in this alloy system

    High temperature ceramic membrane for COâ‚‚ reuse and syngas production

The concept proposed is to use mixed ionic-electronic conducting membrane (MIEC) in CO2 reuse and syngas production by taking the advantage of low quality energy resource. The membrane under investigation is a La0,9Cao01FeO3 -6 (LCF) perovskite membrane. Membranes with perovskite structure have shown high oxygen permeability and 100% oxygen selectivity. These membranes have also been demonstrated to produce H2 by water splitting. During the reaction, H2 is produced on the membrane feed side and the resultant oxygen is transported to the membrane sweep side, thus shifting the water splitting reaction towards hydrogen production. Under the same principle, CO is also likely to be produced from CO2 dissociation in the membrane reactor. The produced H2 can be further processed with CO2 to yield hydrocarbon fuel. In this way, the usual products of combustion, H20 and CO2, can be reused by the membrane reactor. In this thesis, a literature review of the existing technologies of hydrogen production and CO2 reduction is presented. The reviewed technologies are compared to our proposed method for water splitting and CO2 reuse. A bench scale reactor was built to test the LCF membrane in order to understand the characteristics of the membrane. Tests are also done for the proposed water splitting reaction. The reactor design, experimental set-ups and experimental procedures are also presented in this thesis. The results of the experiments are analyzed and future work for improving the membrane reactor is proposed.by Le Chang.S.M

    3D FEA modelling of laminated composites in bending and their failure mechanisms

    keywords: 3D keywords: 3D keywords: 3D keywords: 3D keywords: 3DAbstract This paper developed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of fibre lay-up on the initiation of failure of laminated composites in bending. Tsai-Hill failure criterion was applied to identify the critical areas of failure in composite laminates. In accordance with the 3D FEA, unidirectional ([0]16), cross-ply ([0/90]4s) and angle-ply ([±45]4s) laminates made up of pre-preg Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) composites were manufactured and tested under three-point bending. The basic principles of Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) were extended to three-dimension, and the analytical solution was critically compared with the FEA results. The 3D FEA results revealed significant transverse normal stresses in the cross-ply laminate and in-plane shear stress in the angle-ply laminate near free edge regions which are overlooked by conventional laminate model. The microscopic images showed that these free edge effects were the main reason for stiffness reduction observed in the bending tests. The study illustrated the significant effects of fibre lay-up on the flexural failure mechanisms in composite laminates which lead to some suggestions to improve the design of composite laminates

    Systematic approach towards reliable estimation of abdominal aortic aneurysm size by ultrasound imaging and CT

    Background: The management of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is fully dictated by AAA size, but there are no uniform measurement guidelines, and systematic differences exist between ultrasound- and CT-based size estimation. The aim of this study was to devise a uniform ultrasound acquisition and measurement protocol, and to test whether harmonization of ultrasound and CT readings is feasible. Methods: A literature review was undertaken to evaluate evidence for ultrasound-based measurement of AAA. A protocol for measuring AAA was then developed, and intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility was tested. Finally, agreement between ultrasound readings and CT-based AAA diameters was evaluated. This was an observational study of patients with a small AAA who participated in two pharmaceutical intervention trials. Results: Based on a literature review, an ultrasound acquisition and reading protocol was devised. Evaluation of the protocol showed an intraobserver repeatability of 1.6 mm (2s.d.) and an interobserver intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.97. Comparison of protocolled ultrasound readings and local CT readings indicated a good correlation (r = 0.81), but a systematic +4.1-mm difference for CT. Harmonized size readings for ultrasound imaging and CT increased the correlation (r = 0.91) and reduced the systematic difference to +1.8 mm by CT. Interobserver reproducibility of protocolized CT measurements showed an ICC of 0.94 for the inner-to-inner method and 0.96 for the outer-to-outer method. Conclusion: The absence of harmonized size acquisition and reading guidelines results in overtreatment and undertreatment of patients with AAA. This can be avoided by the implementation of standardized ultrasound acquisition and a harmonized reading protocol for ultrasound- and CT-based readings
