    Normal development of refractive state and ocular component dimensions in the marmoset (Callithrix jacchus)

    AbstractRefractive state and ocular dimensions were studied longitudinally in nine normal marmosets. Animals were anaesthetised and examined (with some exceptions) at 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 24 and 39 weeks of age. Cycloplegic retinoscopy showed that hyperopia early in life rapidly diminished. Refraction corrected for the artefact of retinoscopy stabilised by 8 weeks of age, but at a slightly myopic value, rather than at emmetropia. The ocular components continued to change throughout the period studied. Corneal radius, measured by photokeratometry, increased slightly during development. Anterior segment depth and vitreous chamber depth (VCD), measured by A-scan ultrasonography, increased throughout development while lens thickness initially increased and then decreased. Data from the eyes of these normal animals were compared with that from the contralateral eyes of animals which received short periods of monocular deprivation early in life (Troilo, D., & Judge S.J.     Direct electrochemical production of pseudo-binary Ti–Fe alloys from mixtures of synthetic rutile and iron(III) oxide

    Combining the FFC-Cambridge process with field-assisted sintering technology (FAST) allows for the realisation of an alternative, entirely solid-state, production route for a wide range of metals and alloys. For titanium, this could provide a route to produce alloys at a lower cost compared to the conventional Kroll-based route. Use of synthetic rutile instead of high purity TiO2 offers further potential cost savings, with previous studies reporting on the reduction of this feedstock via the FFC-Cambridge process. In this study, mixtures of synthetic rutile and iron oxide (Fe2O3) powders were co-reduced using the FFC-Cambridge process, directly producing titanium alloy powders. The powders were subsequently consolidated using FAST to generate homogeneous, pseudo-binary Ti–Fe alloys containing up to 9 wt.% Fe. The oxide mixture, reduced powders and bulk alloys were fully characterised to determine the microstructure and chemistry evolution during processing. Increasing Fe content led to greater ÎČ phase stabilisation but no TiFe intermetallic phase was observed in any of the consolidated alloys. Microhardness testing was performed for preliminary assessment of mechanical properties, with values between 330–400 Hv. Maximum hardness was measured in the alloy containing 5.15 wt.% Fe, thought due to the strengthening effect of fine α phase precipitation within the ÎČ grains. At higher Fe contents, there was sufficient ÎČ stabilisation to prevent α phase transformation on cooling, leading to a reduction in hardness despite a general increase from solid solution strengthening

    Temporal trends in the retention of BVD+ calves and associated animal and herd-level risk factors during the compulsory eradication programme in Ireland

    AbstractThe national BVD eradication programme in Ireland started on a voluntary basis in 2012, becoming compulsory in 2013. The programme relies on accurate identification and prompt removal of BVD+ calves. However, a minority of herd owners have chosen to retain BVD+ animals (defined as still being alive more than seven weeks after the date of the initial test), typically with a view to fattening them to obtain some salvage value. During each year of the programme, additional measures have been introduced and implemented to encourage prompt removal of BVD+ animals. The objective of this study was to describe temporal trends in the retention of BVD+ calves and associated animal and herd-level risk factors during the first three years of the compulsory eradication programme in Ireland.The study population included all BVD+ calves born in Ireland in 2013–2015. A parametric survival model was developed to model the time from the initial BVD test until the animal was slaughtered/died on farm or until 31 December 2015 (whichever was earlier). A total of 29,504 BVD+ animals, from 13,917 herds, were included in the study. The proportion of BVD+ animals that were removed from the herd within 7 weeks of the initial test date increased from 43.7% in 2013 to 70.3% in 2015. BVD+ animals born in 2015 had a much lower survival time (median=33days) compared to the 2013 birth cohort (median=62days), with a year on year reduction in survival of BVD+ calves. In the initial parametric survival models, all interactions with herd type were significant. Therefore, separate models were developed for beef and dairy herds. Overall the results of the survival models were similar, with birth year, BVD+ status, herd size, county of birth and birth month consistently identified as risk factors independent of herd type (beef or dairy) or the numbers of BVD+ animals (single or multiple) in the herd. In addition, the presence of a registered mobile telephone number was identified as a risk factor in all models except for dairy herds with a single BVD+, while the sex of the BVD+ calf was only identified as a risk factor in this model.Significant progress has been made in addressing the issue of retention of BVD+ calves, however, there is a need for further improvement. A number of risk factors associated with retention have been identified suggesting areas where future efforts can be addressed

    Vapor sensing properties of a conductive polymer composite containing Nickel particles with nano-scale surface features

    This paper presents an unusual conductive polymer composite, produced by Peratech Ltd under the trademark QTCℱ, which has many vapor sensing applications. Nickel particles are intimately coated by an elastomeric binder such that no percolative conduction can occur. However, the nickel particles are shown to possess spiky nanoscale surface features, which promote conduction by a field-assisted quantum tunneling mechanism. Granular QTCℱ can be dispersed into a polymer matrix to produce a vapor sensor. Under exposure to vapor, the polymer swells and the resistance of the composite increases. In this work, granular sensors are subjected to acetone and tetrahydrofuran (THF) vapors. The response for THF shows an increase in resistance of a factor of 108, over a time-scale of a few seconds. This response is larger and faster than many conventional vapor sensing composites. This is a significantly larger response than that obtained historically for the same sensor, suggesting that some degree of sensor aging is desirable. The response and subsequent recovery can be explained by a case II diffusion model, and linked to Hildebrand solubility parameters of the vapor and polymer components

    Site assessment of Douglas Shoal ship grounding in the Great Barrier Reef

    The bulk carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground on Douglas Shoal in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in April 2010. At over 40 hectares, this is the largest ship grounding scar known in the Great Barrier Reef, and possibly the largest reef-related grounding in the world. Challenges for assessment of the site included its large scale and the remote nature of Douglas Shoal coupled with its high exposure to wind, wave conditions and fauna that may pose safety hazards. Marine surveys used multiple and novel methods including sediment sampling combined with visual and acoustic survey techniques

    Identification of environmentally stable QTL for resistance against Leptosphaeria maculans in oilseed rape (Brassica napus)

Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mediated resistance against L. maculans in B. napus is considered to be race non-specific and potentially durable. Identification and evaluation of QTL for resistance to L. maculans is important for breeding oilseed rape cultivars with durable resistance. An oilseed rape mapping population was used to detect QTL for resistance against L. maculans in five winter oilseed rape field experiments under different environments. A total of 17 QTL involved in ‘field’ quantitative resistance against L. maculans were detected and collectively explained 51% of the phenotypic variation. The number of QTL detected in each experiment ranged from two to nine and individual QTL explained 2 to 25% of the phenotypic variation. QTL × environment interaction analysis suggested that six of these QTL were less sensitive to environmental factors, so they were considered to be stable QTL. Markers linked to these stable QTL will be valuable for selection to breed for effective resistance against L. maculans in different environments, which will contribute to sustainable management of the disease.Peer reviewe

    Let P be a locally finite circle packing in the plane invariant under a non-elementary Kleinian group Gamma and with finitely many Gamma-orbits. When Gamma is geometrically finite, we construct an explicit Borel measure on the plane which describes the asymptotic distribution of small circles in P, assuming that either the critical exponent of Gamma is strictly bigger than 1 or P does not contain an infinite bouquet of tangent circles glued at a parabolic fixed point of Gamma. Our construction also works for P invariant under a geometrically infinite group Gamma, provided Gamma admits a finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure and the Gamma-skinning size of P is finite.
