    Obtaining a class of Type O pure radiation metrics with a cosmological constant, using invariant operators

    Using the generalised invariant formalism we derive a class of conformally flat spacetimes whose Ricci tensor has a pure radiation and a Ricci scalar component. The method used is a development of the methods used earlier for pure radiation spacetimes of Petrov types O and N respectively. In this paper we demonstrate how to handle, in the generalised invariant formalism, spacetimes with isotropy freedom and rich Killing vector structure. Once the spacetimes have been constructed, it is straightforward to deduce their Karlhede classification: the Karlhede algorithm terminates at the fourth derivative order, and the spacetimes all have one degree of null isotropy and three, four or five Killing vectors.Comment: 29 page

    Type O pure radiation metrics with a cosmological constant

    In this paper we complete the integration of the conformally flat pure radiation spacetimes with a non-zero cosmological constant Λ\Lambda, and τ0\tau \ne 0, by considering the case Λ+ττˉ0\Lambda +\tau\bar\tau \ne 0. This is a further demonstration of the power and suitability of the generalised invariant formalism (GIF) for spacetimes where only one null direction is picked out by the Riemann tensor. For these spacetimes, the GIF picks out a second null direction, (from the second derivative of the Riemann tensor) and once this spinor has been identified the calculations are transferred to the simpler GHP formalism, where the tetrad and metric are determined. The whole class of conformally flat pure radiation spacetimes with a non-zero cosmological constant (those found in this paper, together with those found earlier for the case Λ+ττˉ=0\Lambda +\tau\bar\tau = 0) have a rich variety of subclasses with zero, one, two, three, four or five Killing vectors

    Variable number of tandem repeat markers in the genome sequence of Mycosphaerella fijiensis, the causal agent of black leaf streak disease of banana (Musa spp)

    ABSTRACT. We searched the genome of Mycosphaerella fijiensis for molecular markers that would allow population genetics analysis of this plant pathogen. M. fijiensis, the causal agent of banana leaf streak disease, also known as black Sigatoka, is the most devastating pathogen attacking bananas (Musa spp). Recently, the entire genome sequence of M. fijiensis became available. We screened this database for VNTR markers. Forty-two primer pairs were selected for validation, based on repeat type and length and the number of repeat units. Five VNTR markers showing multiple alleles were validated with a reference set of isolates from different parts of the world and a population from a banana plantation in Costa Rica. Polymorphism information content values varied from 0.6414 to 0.7544 for the reference set and from 0.0400 and 0.7373 for the population set. Eighty percent of the polymorphism information content values were above 0.60, indicating that the markers are highly informative. These markers allowed robust scoring of agarose gels and proved to be useful for variability and population genetics studies. In conclusion, the strategy we developed to identify and validate VNTR markers is an efficient means to incorporate markers that can be used for fungicide resistance management and to develop breeding strategies to control banana black leaf streak disease.     The inflammatory stimulus of a natural latex biomembrane improves healing in mice

    The aim of the present study was to compare healing obtained with biomembranes with the natural healing process (sham) using biochemical and immunohistological assays. C57BL/6 mice were divided into 4 groups of 15 mice each and received different subcutaneous implants: natural latex biomembrane (NLB), denatured latex (DL), expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE), or sham. On the 2nd, 7th, and 14th days post-treatment, 5 mice per group were sacrificed and biopsied for the following measurements: oxidative stress based on malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and hydrogen peroxide by the method of ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange (FOX), as well as glutathione and total proteins; histological evaluation to enumerate inflammatory cells, fibroblasts, blood vessels, and collagen, and immunohistochemical staining for inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin-1&#946;, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor-&#946;1 (TGF-&#946;1). On day 2 post-treatment, NLB stimulated a dense inflammatory infiltrate mainly consisting of polymorphonuclear cells, as indicated by increased MPO (P < 0.05), but oxidative stress due to MDA was not observed until the 7th day (P < 0.05). The number of blood vessels was greater in NLB (P < 0.05) and DL (P < 0.05) mice compared to sham animals on day 14. NLB induced fibroplasia by day 14 (P < 0.05) with low expression of TGF-&#946;1 and collagenesis. Thus, NLB significantly induced the inflammatory phase of healing mediated by oxidative stress, which appeared to influence the subsequent phases such as angiogenesis (with low expression of VEGF) and fibroplasia (independent of TGF-&#946;1) without influencing collagenesis

    Expansion for the solutions of the Bogomolny equations on the torus

    We show that the solutions of the Bogomolny equations for the Abelian Higgs model on a two-dimensional torus, can be expanded in powers of a quantity epsilon measuring the departure of the area from the critical area. This allows a precise determination of the shape of the solutions for all magnetic fluxes and arbitrary position of the Higgs field zeroes. The expansion is carried out to 51 orders for a couple of representative cases, including the unit flux case. We analyse the behaviour of the expansion in the limit of large areas, in which case the solutions approach those on the plane. Our results suggest convergence all the way up to infinite area.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, slightly revised version as published in JHE

    Magnetically Frustrated Behavior In Multiferroics R Mn2 O 5 (r=bi, Eu, And Dy): A Raman Scattering Study

    A temperature dependent Raman scattering study in multiferroic single crystals R Mn2 O5 (R=Bi, Eu, and Dy) was performed. The Raman spectra were measured in the range from 150 to 450 cm-1 involving mostly Mn-O-Mn bending vibrations, complementing our previous work in a higher frequency range involving Mn-O stretching modes. A number of studied phonons present anomalous frequency behavior below a characteristic temperature, T* ∼60-65 K, such as that found for the stretching modes. The sign and magnitude of such anomalous behavior appear to be correlated with the ionic radius of R, being softening for R=Bi and hardening for R=Eu and Dy in the range between TC TN and T*.     This paper analyzes, based on primary sources, mainly official and institutional documents, and on interviews with municipal managers, the performance of five business groups in municipal basic education systems. It is aimed to identify the outcomes of the adoption of private education systems by Brazilian municipalities for the composition of earmarked revenues spending for education and for the right to education.     Brane-Antibrane Inflation in Orbifold and Orientifold Models

    We analyse the cosmological implications of brane-antibrane systems in string-theoretic orbifold and orientifold models. In a class of realistic models, consistency conditions require branes and antibranes to be stuck at different fixed points, and so their mutual attraction generates a potential for one of the radii of the underlying torus or the 4D string dilaton. Assuming that all other moduli have been fixed by string effects, we find that this potential leads naturally to a period of cosmic inflation with the radion or dilaton field as the inflaton. The slow-roll conditions are satisfied more generically than if the branes were free to move within the space. The appearance of tachyon fields at certain points in moduli space indicates the onset of phase transitions to different non-BPS brane systems, providing ways of ending inflation and reheating the corresponding observable brane universe. In each case we find relations between the inflationary parameters and the string scale to get the correct spectrum of density perturbations. In some examples the small numbers required as inputs are no smaller than 0.01, and are the same small quantities which are required to explain the gauge hierarchy.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures.
