    Understanding the kinetic behavior of a Mo-V-Te-Nb mixed oxide in the oxydehydrogenation of ethane

    Two kinetic models based on Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) and Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanisms were developed to describe the oxydehydrogenation of ethane to yield ethylene over a Mo-V-Te-Nb catalyst. Obtained in a lab-scale fixed-bed reactor, experimental data at the steady-state were used to estimate the kinetic models parameters via a nonisothermal regression. Experiments were performed using an ethane, oxygen and nitrogen mixture as feedstock, spanning temperatures from 673 to 753 K, inlet partial pressures of oxygen and ethane between 5.0 and 22.0 kPa, and space-time from 10 to 70 g(cat) h(molethane)- (1). Ethylene, CO and CO2 were the only detected products, the selectivity for ethylene ranged from 76% to 96% for an ethane conversion interval 4-85%. A series of tests feeding ethylene instead of ethane were also performed at 713 K, varying inlet partial pressures and space-time in the same ranges as was done for ethane. Ethylene conversion was relatively low, 3-14%, the dominant product being CO with CO/CO2 ratios from 0.73 to 0.79. The LH mechanism was found to represent better the experimental data. The oxydehydrogenation of ethane was the reaction with the lowest activation energy, 108-115 kJ mol (1). Except for the conversion of ethane into CO2, deep oxidations were detected as very energetically demanding steps, 156-193 kJ mol (1). Competitive adsorption between reagents and products occurred in the two mechanisms particularly at relatively high reaction severity, water re-adsorption being weaker in comparison with COx re-adsorption.     Dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization over P-CoMo on sol-gel alumina modified by La addition. Effect of rare-earth content

    articuloAlumina-lanthana (La at 1, 3, or 5 wt%) supports were prepared by sol-gel from Al alkoxide sol where La(NO 3 ) 3 was added. Annealed (550 °C) xerogels were characterized by N 2 physisorption, thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy- energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), CO 2 -adsorption studied in IR region, Raman and ultraviolet-vis (UV-vis) spectroscopies. The texture of amorphous binary matrices of high La dispersion was adequate to applications in catalysts for middle distillates hydrodesulfurization (HDS). Generally, the amount and strength of surface basic sites increased with La content in solids. Mo (at 2.8 at. nm −2 ) and Co (at Co/(Co+Mo) = 0.3) were deposited over carriers by one-pot simultaneous impregnation in the presence of PO 4 3− (P 2 O 5 /(NiO+MoO 3 ) = 0.2 mass ratio). Calcined (400 °C) Co-Mo-P impregnated precursors had decreased basicity as to that of corresponding carriers, suggesting strong La-deposited species interaction. As La content in carriers increased Mo=O Raman stretching vibrations shifted to lower wave-numbers (949 to 935 cm −1 ) suggesting octahedral molybdates coordination change to tetrahedral. Although La at the lowest concentration (1 wt%) enhanced dibenzothiophene, HDS (~38% higher as to the Al 2 O 3 -supported formulation) desulfurization was significantly diminished at augmented content. Presence of hardly sulfidable tetrahedral Mo originated during impregnation at basic conditions in pores of La-modified carriers seemed to dictate observed behavior.     Las zeolitas HY jerárquicas fueron sintetizadas mediante el método de despolimerización-recristalización (DR) a partir de una zeolita NaY comercial. La adición de (NH4)2SO4 después de la etapa de despolimerización permite la remoción del Na. La zeolita despolimerizada fue parcialmente recristalizada a 25°C obteniendo nanocristales de zeolita HY (D1/R1), soportada en un material amorfo mesoporoso, generado del material no recristalizado. Posteriormente, la zeolita D1/R1 fue sometida a un segundo tratamiento de DR a las mismas condiciones que el primero, material D2/R2. Los patrones de DRX de la zeolitas Y jerárquicas muestran un decrecimiento en la intensidad de sus líneas de difracción, respecto a la zeolita NaY comercial, mostrando la formación de cristales de zeolita HY más pequeños. La curvatura de la línea base del espectro de DRX, evidencia la presencia del material amorfo mesoporoso. Las isotermas de adsorción/desorción y la distribución del tamaño de poro, muestran que el material amorfo de la zeolita jerárquica D2/R2 presentó una distribución de poros más homogénea, centrados en 130 Å, que la zeolita D1/R1.     SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity are associated with genetic variants affecting gene expression in a variety of tissues

    Variability in SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and COVID-19 disease severity between individuals is partly due to genetic factors. Here, we identify 4 genomic loci with suggestive associations for SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility and 19 for COVID-19 disease severity. Four of these 23 loci likely have an ethnicity-specific component. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals in 11 loci colocalize with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) associated with the expression of 20 genes in 62 tissues/cell types (range: 1:43 tissues/gene), including lung, brain, heart, muscle, and skin as well as the digestive system and immune system. We perform genetic fine mapping to compute 99% credible SNP sets, which identify 10 GWAS loci that have eight or fewer SNPs in the credible set, including three loci with one single likely causal SNP. Our study suggests that the diverse symptoms and disease severity of COVID-19 observed between individuals is associated with variants across the genome, affecting gene expression levels in a wide variety of tissue types

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     The global retinoblastoma outcome study : a prospective, cluster-based analysis of 4064 patients from 149 countries

    DATA SHARING : The study data will become available online once all analyses are complete.BACKGROUND : Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular cancer worldwide. There is some evidence to suggest that major differences exist in treatment outcomes for children with retinoblastoma from different regions, but these differences have not been assessed on a global scale. We aimed to report 3-year outcomes for children with retinoblastoma globally and to investigate factors associated with survival. METHODS : We did a prospective cluster-based analysis of treatment-naive patients with retinoblastoma who were diagnosed between Jan 1, 2017, and Dec 31, 2017, then treated and followed up for 3 years. Patients were recruited from 260 specialised treatment centres worldwide. Data were obtained from participating centres on primary and additional treatments, duration of follow-up, metastasis, eye globe salvage, and survival outcome. We analysed time to death and time to enucleation with Cox regression models. FINDINGS : The cohort included 4064 children from 149 countries. The median age at diagnosis was 23·2 months (IQR 11·0–36·5). Extraocular tumour spread (cT4 of the cTNMH classification) at diagnosis was reported in five (0·8%) of 636 children from high-income countries, 55 (5·4%) of 1027 children from upper-middle-income countries, 342 (19·7%) of 1738 children from lower-middle-income countries, and 196 (42·9%) of 457 children from low-income countries. Enucleation surgery was available for all children and intravenous chemotherapy was available for 4014 (98·8%) of 4064 children. The 3-year survival rate was 99·5% (95% CI 98·8–100·0) for children from high-income countries, 91·2% (89·5–93·0) for children from upper-middle-income countries, 80·3% (78·3–82·3) for children from lower-middle-income countries, and 57·3% (52·1-63·0) for children from low-income countries. On analysis, independent factors for worse survival were residence in low-income countries compared to high-income countries (hazard ratio 16·67; 95% CI 4·76–50·00), cT4 advanced tumour compared to cT1 (8·98; 4·44–18·18), and older age at diagnosis in children up to 3 years (1·38 per year; 1·23–1·56). For children aged 3–7 years, the mortality risk decreased slightly (p=0·0104 for the change in slope). INTERPRETATION : This study, estimated to include approximately half of all new retinoblastoma cases worldwide in 2017, shows profound inequity in survival of children depending on the national income level of their country of residence. In high-income countries, death from retinoblastoma is rare, whereas in low-income countries estimated 3-year survival is just over 50%.
