    Universal behavior of internal friction in glasses below T : anharmonicity vs relaxation

    Comparison of the internal friction at hypersonic frequencies between a few K and the glass transition temperature Tg for various glasses brings out general features. At low temperature, internal friction is only weakly dependent on the material. At high temperature but still below Tg the internal friction for strong glasses shows a T-independent plateau in a very wide domain of temperature; in contrast, for fragile glass, a nearly linear variation of internal friction with T is observed. Anharmonicity appears dominant over thermally activated relaxational processes at high temperature.Comment: accepted in Physical Review

    Scaling the Temperature-dependent Boson Peak of Vitreous Silica with the high-frequency Bulk Modulus derived from Brillouin Scattering Data

    The position and strength of the boson peak in silica glass vary considerably with temperature TT. Such variations cannot be explained solely with changes in the Debye energy. New Brillouin scattering measurements are presented which allow determining the TT-dependence of unrelaxed acoustic velocities. Using a velocity based on the bulk modulus, scaling exponents are found which agree with the soft-potential model. The unrelaxed bulk modulus thus appears to be a good measure for the structural evolution of silica with TT and to set the energy scale for the soft potentials.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Primary and Immortalized Human Respiratory Cells Display Different Patterns of Cytotoxicity and Cytokine Release upon Exposure to Deoxynivalenol, Nivalenol and Fusarenon-X.

    The type B trichothecene mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV) and fusarenon-X (FX) are structurally related secondary metabolites frequently produced by <i>Fusarium</i> on wheat. Consequently, DON, NIV and FX contaminate wheat dusts, exposing grain workers to toxins by inhalation. Those trichothecenes at low, relevant, exposition concentrations have differential effects on intestinal cells, but whether such differences exist with respiratory cells is mostly unknown, while it is required to assess the combined risk of exposure to mycotoxins. The goal of the present study was to compare the effects of DON, NIV and FX alone or in combination on the viability and IL-6 and IL-8-inducing capacity of human epithelial cells representative of the respiratory tract: primary human airway epithelial cells of nasal (hAECN) and bronchial (hAECB) origin, and immortalized human bronchial (16HBE14o-) and alveolar (A549) epithelial cell lines. We report that A549 cells are particularly resistant to the cytotoxic effects of mycotoxins. FX is more toxic than DON and NIV for all epithelial cell types. Nasal and bronchial primary cells are more sensitive than bronchial and alveolar cell lines to combined mycotoxin mixtures at low concentrations, although they are less sensitive to mycotoxins alone. Interactions between mycotoxins at low concentrations are rarely additive and are observed only for DON/NIV and NIV/FX on hAECB cells and DON/NIV/FX on A549 cells. Most interactions at low mycotoxin concentrations are synergistic, antagonistic interactions being observed only for DON/FX on hAECB, DON/NIV on 16HBE14o- and NIV/FX on A549 cells. DON, NIV and FX induce, albeit at different levels, IL-6 and IL-8 release by all cell types. However, NIV and FX at concentrations of low cytotoxicity induce IL-6 release by hAECB and A549 cells, and IL-8 release by hAECN cells. Overall, these data suggest that combined exposure to mycotoxins at low concentrations have a stronger effect on primary nasal epithelial cells than on bronchial epithelial cells and activate different inflammatory pathways. This information is particularly relevant for future studies about the hazard of occupational exposure to mycotoxins by inhalation and its impact on the respiratory tract

    Small Angle Scattering by Fractal Aggregates: A Numerical Investigation of the Crossover Between the Fractal Regime and the Porod Regime

    Fractal aggregates are built on a computer using off-lattice cluster-cluster aggregation models. The aggregates are made of spherical particles of different sizes distributed according to a Gaussian-like distribution characterised by a mean a0a_0 and a standard deviation σ\sigma. The wave vector dependent scattered intensity I(q)I(q) is computed in order to study the influence of the particle polydispersity on the crossover between the fractal regime and the Porod regime. It is shown that, given a0a_0, the location qcq_c of the crossover decreases as σ\sigma increases.     Band Formation during Gaseous Diffusion in Aerogels

    We study experimentally how gaseous HCl and NH_3 diffuse from opposite sides of and react in silica aerogel rods with porosity of 92 % and average pore size of about 50 nm. The reaction leads to solid NH_4Cl, which is deposited in thin sheet-like structures. We present a numerical study of the phenomenon. Due to the difference in boundary conditions between this system and those usually studied, we find the sheet-like structures in the aerogel to differ significantly from older studies.     Inositol phosphatase INPP4B sustains ILC1s and intratumoral NK cells through an AKT-driven pathway

    Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a heterogeneous population of lymphocytes that coordinate early immune responses and maintain tissue homeostasis. Type 1 innate immune responses are mediated by natural killer (NK) cells and group 1 ILCs (ILC1s). Despite their shared features, NK cells and ILC1s display profound differences among various tissue microenvironments. Here, we identify the inositol polyphosphatase INPP4B as a hallmark feature of tissue-resident ILC1s and intratumoral NK cells using an scRNA-seq atlas of tissue-associated and circulating NK/ILC1s. Conditional deletion of Inpp4b in ILC1s and NK cells reveals that it is necessary for the homeostasis of tissue-resident ILC1s but not circulating NK cells at steady-state. Inpp4b-deficient cells display increased rates of apoptosis and reduced activation of the prosurvival molecule AKT. Furthermore, expression of Inpp4b by NK/ILC1s is necessary for their presence in the intratumoral environment, and lack of Inpp4b impairs antitumor immunity. These findings highlight INPP4B as a novel regulator of tissue residency and antitumor function in ILC1s and NK cells

    Assessment of digital image correlation measurement errors: methodology and results

    Optical full-field measurement methods such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are increasingly used in the field of experimental mechanics, but they still suffer from a lack of information about their metrological performances. To assess the performance of DIC techniques and give some practical rules for users, a collaborative work has been carried out by the Workgroup “Metrology” of the French CNRS research network 2519 “MCIMS (Mesures de Champs et Identification en Mécanique des Solides / Full-field measurement and identification in solid mechanics, http://www.ifma.fr/lami/gdr2519)”. A methodology is proposed to assess the metrological performances of the image processing algorithms that constitute their main component, the knowledge of which being required for a global assessment of the whole measurement system. The study is based on displacement error assessment from synthetic speckle images. Series of synthetic reference and deformed images with random patterns have been generated, assuming a sinusoidal displacement field with various frequencies and amplitudes. Displacements are evaluated by several DIC packages based on various formulations and used in the French community. Evaluated displacements are compared with the exact imposed values and errors are statistically analyzed. Results show general trends rather independent of the implementations but strongly correlated with the assumptions of the underlying algorithms. Various error regimes are identified, for which the dependence of the uncertainty with the parameters of the algorithms, such as subset size, gray level interpolation or shape functions, is discussed

    High frequency sound waves in vitreous silica

    We report a molecular dynamics simulation study of the sound waves in vitreous silica in the mesoscopic exchanged momentum range. The calculated dynamical structure factors are in quantitative agreement with recent experimental inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering data. The analysis of the longitudinal and transverse current spectra allows to discriminate between opposite interpretations of the existing experimental data in favour of the propagating nature of the high frequency sound waves.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 ps figures; to be published in Phys.     Globally Anisotropic High Porosity Silica Aerogels

    We discuss two methods by which high porosity silica aerogels can be engineered to exhibit global anisotropy. First, anisotropy can be introduced with axial strain. In addition, intrinsic anisotropy can result during growth and drying stages and, suitably controlled, it can be correlated with preferential radial shrinkage in cylindrical samples. We have performed small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to characterize these two types of anisotropy. We show that global anisotropy originating from either strain or shrinkage leads to optical birefringence and that optical cross-polarization studies are a useful characterization of the uniformity of the imposed global anisotropy.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Journal of Non-Crystalline Solid
