Peptide nanofiber scaffolds for multipotent stromal cell culturing
Self-assembled peptide nanofibers are versatile materials providing suitable platforms for regenerative medicine applications. This chapter describes the use of peptide nanofibers as extracellular matrix mimetic scaffolds for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) multipotent stromal cell culture systems and procedures for in vitro experiments using these scaffolds. Preparation of 2D and 3D peptide nanofiber scaffolds and cell culturing procedures are presented as part of in vitro experiments including cell adhesion, viability, and spreading analysis. Analysis of cellular differentiation on peptide nanofiber scaffolds is described through immunocytochemistry, qRT-PCR, and other biochemical experiments towards osteogenic and chondrogenic lineage. © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2013
A Pre-Landing Assessment of Regolith Properties at the InSight Landing Site
This article discusses relevant physical properties of the regolith at the Mars InSight landing site as understood prior to landing of the spacecraft. InSight will land in the northern lowland plains of Mars, close to the equator, where the regolith is estimated to be ≥3--5 m thick. These investigations of physical properties have relied on data collected from Mars orbital measurements, previously collected lander and rover data, results of studies of data and samples from Apollo lunar missions, laboratory measurements on regolith simulants, and theoretical studies. The investigations include changes in properties with depth and temperature. Mechanical properties investigated include density, grain-size distribution, cohesion, and angle of internal friction. Thermophysical properties include thermal inertia, surface emissivity and albedo, thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and specific heat. Regolith elastic properties not only include parameters that control seismic wave velocities in the immediate vicinity of the Insight lander but also coupling of the lander and other potential noise sources to the InSight broadband seismometer. The related properties include Poisson’s ratio, P- and S-wave velocities, Young’s modulus, and seismic attenuation. Finally, mass diffusivity was investigated to estimate gas movements in the regolith driven by atmospheric pressure changes. Physical properties presented here are all to some degree speculative. However, they form a basis for interpretation of the early data to be returned from the InSight mission.Additional co-authors: Nick Teanby and Sharon Keda
Investigation of effect of special washing processes on denim fabrics' properties
In this study, the effect of different washing processes on various performance and surface properties of denim fabrics were examined. For this purpose, 3 different types of fabrics (1/1 plain, 2/2 twill and 3/1 twill constructions) were produced from 100% cotton yarn, and 4 different types of washing processes (rinse, enzyme, stone and stone+bleach) were applied. The effect of woven structure and washing processes on denim fabrics performance properties like dimensional stability, breaking strength, tearing strength, bending rigidity, surface views examination and colorimetric evaluation were investigated statistically
Renal stone composition does not affect the outcome of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in children
PubMedID: 29761226Purpose: We sought to investigate the association between renal stone composition and percutaneous nephrolithotomy outcomes in pediatric patients and define the characterization of the stone composition. Methods: The data of 1157 children who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy between 1991 and 2012 were retrieved from the multicenter database of the Turkish Pediatric Urology Society. The study population comprised 359 children (160 girls, 199 boys) with stone analyses. Patients were divided into five groups according to the stone composition [group 1: calcium oxalate; group 2: calcium phosphate; group 3: infection stones (magnesium ammonium phosphate, ammonium urate); group 4: cystine; group 5: uric acid, xanthine stones]. Results: Patient characteristics, perioperative, postoperative, and stone characteristics were compared considering the stone composition. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning age, sex, side involved, preoperative hematocrit levels, and solitary renal unit. Patients with cystine stones were more likely to have a history of stone treatment. Groups 2 and 5 had mostly solitary stones. However, group 3 had staghorn stone more often, and group 4 frequently had multiple stones. Overall stone-free rate (79.4%) was similar among the groups. Although stone composition was related to blood transfusion and prolonged operative and fluoroscopy screening times on univariate analysis, it was not a significant predictor of them on multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Stone composition was not a predictor of outcomes of pediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Discussion of 'Metamorphic P - T and retrograde path of high-pressure Barrovian metamorphic zones near Cairn Leuchan, Caledonian orogen, Scotland'

Omori reply: First, we thank Viete, Oliver & Wilde for their interesting and thought-provoking comments on the timing of the high-pressure granulite facies (HGR) metamorphism recorded in metamorphic rocks at Cairn Leuchan, Scotland, published by Aoki et al. (2013). Based on new metamorphic data of garnetites and garnet-amphibolites at Cairn Leuchan and new zircon U-Pb ages of amphibolitized eclogite at Tomatin, we suggested in our publication that the HGR metamorphism was retrograde after eclogite facies before the c. 470 Ma 'Barrovian metamorphism'. Viete, Oliver & Wilde however speculate that the HGR metamorphism at Cairn Leuchan may have occurred at c. 1000 Ma, as a result of their new U-Pb zircon age of the Cowhythe Gneiss at Portsoy and from previous studies of the geological structure and geochronology. We are grateful for this opportunity to describe, albeit in a preliminary manner, our new understanding and tectonic model of the Caledonian orogen in Scotland and western Ireland of which the Barrovian metamorphism is a key component. A reply to a comment is not the correct place to propose an entirely new paradigm for such a classic orogen, but we will present our model more fully in a future publication..
