    Description of two new actinosporean types from a brook of Fuji Mountain, Honshu, and from Chitose River, Hokkaido, Japan

    Actinospore infection of oligochaetes living in the mud of 3 freshwater biotopes in Japan was studied. Using the cell-well plate method, a new aurantiactinomyxon type was found in 0.77 % of the examined Tubifex tubifex oligochaete specimens from a brook near Yamanashi Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station on Fuji Mountain. In 0.14 % of Lumbriculus variagetus collected from Chitose River, near Chitose Salmon Hatchery, a new siedleckiella type was found, while at the same time 8.1 % of the Lumbriculus spp. oligochaetes released triactinomyxons of Myxobolus arcticus. Of the examined Rhyacodrilus komarovi oligochaetes collected from the Mena River system, Hokkaido, 0.2, 0.6, 0.5 and 0.8% were infected with echinactinomyxon, neoactinomyxum and 2 types of triactinomyxon spores, respectively, and described in our previous paper. The oligochaetes released actinospores for several weeks. Actinospore infection showed high intensity in positive oligochaetes in the case of all the actinosporean types. Two of the actinospore types (aurantiactinomyxon and siedleckiella) presented here have not been previously described

    Monte Carlo study of a two-dimensional quantum ferromagnet

    We present quantum Monte Carlo results for the field and temperature dependence of the magnetization and the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T11/T_1 of a two-dimensional S=1/2S=1/2 quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet. The Monte Carlo method, which yields results free of systematic errors, is described in detail. The high accuracy of the calculated magnetization allows for stringent tests of recent approximate analytical calculations. We also compare our results with recent experimental data for a ν=1\nu=1 quantum Hall ferromagnet, which is expected to be well described by the Heisenberg model. The dynamic response function needed to extract 1/T11/T_1 is obtained using maximum-entropy analytic continuation of the corresponding imaginary-time dependent correlation function.     Cotunneling and non-equilibrium magnetization in magnetic molecular monolayers

    Transport and non-equilibrium magnetization in monolayers of magnetic molecules subject to a bias voltage are considered. We apply a master-equation approach going beyond the sequential-tunneling approximation to study the Coulomb-blockade regime. While the current is very small in this case, the magnetization shows changes of the order of the saturation magnetization for small variations of the bias voltage. Inelastic cotunneling processes manifest themselves as differential-conductance steps, which are accompanied by much larger changes in the magnetization. In addition, the magnetization in the Coulomb-blockade regime exhibits strong signatures of sequential tunneling processes de-exciting molecular states populated by inelastic cotunneling. We also consider the case of a single molecule, finding that cotunneling processes lead to the occurrence of magnetic sidebands below the Coulomb-blockade threshold.     Influence of non-local exchange on RKKY interactions in III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors

    The RKKY interaction between substitutional Mn local moments in GaAs is both spin-direction-dependent and spatially anisotropic. In this Letter we address the strength of these anisotropies using a semi-phenomenological tight-binding model which treats the hybridization between Mn d-orbitals and As p-orbitals perturbatively and accounts realistically for the non-local exchange interaction between their spins. We show that exchange non-locality, valence-band spin-orbit coupling, and band-structure anisotropy all play a role in determining the strength of both effects.     High-to-low CO2 acclimation reveals plasticity of the photorespiratory pathway and indicates regulatory links to cellular metabolism of Arabidopsis

    Background: Photorespiratory carbon metabolism was long considered as an essentially closed and nonregulated pathway with little interaction to other metabolic routes except nitrogen metabolism and respiration. Most mutants of this pathway cannot survive in ambient air and require CO 2-enriched air for normal growth. Several studies indicate that this CO 2 requirement is very different for individual mutants, suggesting a higher plasticity and more interaction of photorespiratory metabolism as generally thought. To understand this better, we examined a variety of high- and low-level parameters at 1% CO 2 and their alteration during acclimation of wild-type plants and selected photorespiratory mutants to ambient air. Methodology and Principal Findings: The wild type and four photorespiratory mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) were grown to a defined stadium at 1% CO 2 and then transferred to normal air (0.038% CO 2). All other conditions remained unchanged. This approach allowed unbiased side-by-side monitoring of acclimation processes on several levels. For all lines, diel (24 h) leaf growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, and PSII fluorescence were monitored. Metabolite profiling was performed for the wild type and two mutants. During acclimation, considerable variation between the individual genotypes was detected in many of the examined parameters, which correlated with the position of the impaired reaction in the photorespiratory pathway. Conclusions: Photorespiratory carbon metabolism does not operate as a fully closed pathway. Acclimation from high to low CO 2 was typically steady and consistent for a number of features over several days, but we also found unexpected short-term events, such as an intermittent very massive rise of glycine levels after transition of one particular mutant to ambient air. We conclude that photorespiration is possibly exposed to redox regulation beyond known substrate-level effects. Additionally, our data support the view that 2-phosphoglycolate could be a key regulator of photosynthetic-photorespiratory metabolism as a whole. © 2012 Timm et al

    Temperature and magnetization-dependent band-gap renormalization and optical many-body effects in diluted magnetic semiconductors

    We calculate the Coulomb interaction induced density, temperature and magnetization dependent many-body band-gap renormalization in a typical diluted magnetic semiconductor GaMnAs in the optimally-doped metallic regime as a function of carrier density and temperature. We find a large (about 0.1 eV) band gap renormalization which is enhanced by the ferromagnetic transition. We also calculate the impurity scattering effect on the gap narrowing. We suggest that the temperature, magnetization, and density dependent band gap renormalization could be used as an experimental probe to determine the valence band or the impurity band nature of carrier ferromagnetism.Comment: Revised versio

    Liquid antiferromagnets in two dimensions

    It is shown that, for proper symmetry of the parent lattice, antiferromagnetic order can survive in two-dimensional liquid crystals and even isotropic liquids of point-like particles, in contradiction to what common sense might suggest. We discuss the requirements for antiferromagnetic order in the absence of translational and/or orientational lattice order. One example is the honeycomb lattice, which upon melting can form a liquid crystal with quasi-long-range orientational and antiferromagnetic order but short-range translational order.
