A two-stage stochastic programming with recourse model for determining robust planting plans in horticulture
A two-stage stochastic programming with recourse model for the problem of determining optimal planting plans for a vegetable crop is presented in this paper. Uncertainty caused by factors such as weather on yields is a major influence on many systems arising in horticulture. Traditional linear programming models are generally unsatisfactory in dealing with the uncertainty and produce solutions that are considered to involve an unacceptable level of risk. The first stage of the model relates to finding a planting plan which is common to all scenarios and the second stage is concerned with deriving a harvesting schedule for each scenario. Solutions are obtained for a range of risk aversion factors that not only result in greater expected profit compared to the corresponding deterministic model, but also are more robust
Synthesis and characterisation of Fe<sub>6</sub> and Fe<sub>12</sub> clusters using bicine
Reaction of bicine {BicH3, N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)glycine} with an Fe(III) oxo-centered pivalate triangle in MeCN in the presence of Et<sub>2</sub>NH yields [Et<sub>2</sub>NH<sub>2</sub>]<sub>2</sub>[Fe<sub>6</sub>O<sub>2</sub>(OH)<sub>2</sub>(Bic)<sub>2</sub>(O<sub>2</sub>CCMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>8</sub>], which possesses an S = 5 ground state.
Changing the base to NaOMe produces [Fe<sub>12</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(Bic)<sub>4</sub>(HBic)<sub>4</sub>(O<sub>2</sub>CCMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>8</sub>], which contains two Fe6 units bridged by the carboxylate arms from the bicine ligands. The complex displays strong antiferromagnetic coupling leading to an S = 0 ground state
Effects of asymmetry on the dynamic stability of aircraft
The oblique wing concept for transonic aircraft was proposed to reduce drag. The dynamic stability of the aircraft was investigated by analytically determining the stability derivatives at angles of skew ranging from 0 and 45 deg and using these stability derivatives in a linear analysis of the coupled aircraft behavior. The stability derivatives were obtained using a lifting line aerodynamic theory and found to give reasonable agreement with derivatives developed in a previous study for the same aircraft. In the dynamic analysis, no instability or large changes occurred in the root locations for skew angles varying from 0 to 45 deg with the exception of roll convergence. The damping in roll, however, decreased by an order of magnitude. Rolling was a prominent feature of all the oscillatory mode shapes at high skew angles
The Impact of Endothall on the Aquatic Plant Community of Kress Lake, Washington
CA dense mat-forming population of Eurasian watermilfoil

) was interfering with fishing and
recreation in a small western Washington lake. A low concentration
(1.5 mg/L active ingredient) of the herbicide endothall
formulated as Aquathol® K was used in 2000 to attempt
to selectively control the Eurasian watermilfoil. Aquatic plant
biomass and frequency data were collected before treatment,
ten weeks after treatment and during the growing season for
3 additional years. Macrophyte data were analyzed to assess
the herbicide’s impacts on Eurasian watermilfoil as well as
the rest of the aquatic plant community. Results showed a significant
decrease in Eurasian watermilfoil biomass and frequency
10 weeks after treatment. The Eurasian watermilfoil
continued to be present, but at a significantly reduced level
through the remainder of the study (3 years after treatment).
Of the native plant species, large-leaf pondweed (
Potamogeton
amplifolius
Tucker
.
) frequency and biomass was significantly
reduced after treatment. Common elodea (
Elodea canadensis
Rich.), muskgrass (
Chara
sp. Vallaint.) and bladderwort (
Utricularia
sp. L.) all increased significantly after treatment.

Variation in compulsory psychiatric inpatient admission in England:a cross-sectional, multilevel analysis
Background: Rates of compulsory admission have increased in England in recent decades, and this trend is accelerating. Studying variation in rates between people and places can help identify modifiable causes. Objectives: To quantify and model variances in the rate of compulsory admission in England at different spatial levels and to assess the extent to which this was explained by characteristics of people and places. Design: Cross-sectional analysis using multilevel statistical modelling. Setting: England, including 98% of Census lower layer super output areas (LSOAs), 95% of primary care trusts (PCTs), 93% of general practices and all 69 NHS providers of specialist mental health services. Participants: 1,287,730 patients. Main outcome measure: The study outcome was compulsory admission, defined as time spent in an inpatient mental illness bed subject to the Mental Health Act (2007) in 2010/11. We excluded patients detained under sections applying to emergency assessment only (including those in places of safety), guardianship or supervision of community treatment. The control group comprised all other users of specialist mental health services during the same period. Data sources: The Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS). Data on explanatory variables, characterising each of the spatial levels in the data set, were obtained from a wide range of sources, and were linked using MHMDS identifiers. Results: A total of 3.5% of patients had at least one compulsory admission in 2010/11. Of (unexplained) variance in the null model, 84.5% occurred between individuals. Statistically significant variance occurred between LSOAs [6.7%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 6.2% to 7.2%] and provider trusts (6.9%, 95% CI 4.3% to 9.5%). Variances at these higher levels remained statistically significant even after adjusting for a large number of explanatory variables, which together explained only 10.2% of variance in the study outcome. The number of provider trusts whose observed rate of compulsory admission differed from the model average to a statistically significant extent fell from 45 in the null model to 20 in the fully adjusted model. We found statistically significant associations between compulsory admission and age, gender, ethnicity, local area deprivation and ethnic density. There was a small but statistically significant association between (higher) bed occupancy and compulsory admission, but this was subsequently confounded by other covariates. Adjusting for PCT investment in mental health services did not improve model fit in the fully adjusted models. Conclusions: This was the largest study of compulsory admissions in England. While 85% of the variance in this outcome occurred between individuals, statistically significant variance (around 7% each) occurred between places (LSOAs) and provider trusts. This higher-level variance in compulsory admission remained largely unchanged even after adjusting for a large number of explanatory variables. We were constrained by data available to us, and therefore our results must be interpreted with caution. We were also unable to consider many hypotheses suggested by the service users, carers and professionals who we consulted. There is an imperative to develop and evaluate interventions to reduce compulsory admission rates. This requires further research to extend our understanding of the reasons why these rates remain so high. Guidelines for research into the effectiveness of Assistive Technologies (AT)
An ESRC funded seminar series entitled Researching the use of assistive technologies by children and young people: interdisciplinary perspectives took place in 2010-2011. The seminars were organised by Dr Chris Abbott, King’s College London and Professor Jannet Wright, De Montfort University, Leicester. The focus of the seminars was on research involving children and young people with disabilities within Education, Health and Social Care. The seminars brought together researchers and users of research: teachers, therapists and developers, including those undertaking Doctoral research. One of the aims of the seminar series was to provide information for practitioners, researchers and developers and to help to build research capacity in this area.
These guidelines are one of the outputs from the seminars. Those contributing to this document include Professor Jannet Wright, Dr Kieron Sheehy, the Open University, Dr Sarah Parsons, the University of Southampton and Dr Chris Abbott. The bibliography provided is intended to help people extend their knowledge in this area of research
An evaluation of the status of living collections for plant, environmental, and microbial research

https://doi.org/10.1007/s12038-017-9685-6While living collections are critical for biological research, support for these foundational infrastructure elements is inconsistent, which makes quality control, regulatory compliance, and reproducibility difficult. In recent years, the Ecological Society of America has hosted several National Science Foundation–sponsored workshops to explore and enhance the sustainability of biological research infrastructure. At the same time, the United States Culture Collection Network has brought together managers of living collections to foster collaboration and information exchange within a specific living collections community. To assess the sustainability of collections, a survey was distributed to collection scientists whose responses provide a benchmark for evaluating the resiliency of these collections. Among the key observations were that plant collections have larger staffing requirements and that living microbe collections were the most vulnerable to retirements or other disruptions. Many higher plant and vertebrate collections have institutional support and several have endowments. Other collections depend on competitive grant support in an era of intense competition for these resources. Opportunities for synergy among living collections depend upon complementing the natural strong engagement with the research communities that depend on these collections with enhanced information sharing, communication, and collective action to keep them sustainable for the future. External efforts by funding agencies and publishers could reinforce the advantages of having professional management of research resources across every discipline. © 2017 Indian Academy of Science
Tunable dipolar magnetism in high-spin molecular clusters
We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system
is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule,
with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D=-0.02K, is the magnetic
unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals whilst
preserving both spin ground-state and anisotropy. For every configuration,
molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing
interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic
behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at
