Combining ability analysis and gene action of grain quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) using line × tester analysis
In rice, twelve lines were crossed with five testers in a line × tester mating design and the resultant 60 hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for their combining ability effects for 15 grain quality traits. The results revealed that the ratio of GCA: SCA variances computed for all the fifteen grain quality traits showed the predominance of non-additive gene action. Among the lines, ADT (R) 47 showed significant desirable gca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for 11 grain quality traits viz., hulling percentage, milling percentage, head rice recovery percentage, kernel breadth, kernel breadth after cooking, breadth wise expansion ratio, gelatinization temperature, amylose content, gel consistency, water uptake and volume expansion ratio. Among the testers, Pusa 1460 showed significant desirable gca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for 10 grain quality traits viz., kernel length, kernel breadth, kernel length/breadth ratio, kernel length after cooking, kernel breadth after cooking, linear elongation ratio, gelatinization temperature, amylose content, water uptake and volume expansion ratio and hence they were adjudged as the best combiners for the improvement of the respective traits. Among the hybrids, the hybrids CO 47/Imp., Samba Mahsuri, ADT (R) 47/IRBB 21 and ADT (R) 46/IRBB 21 were identified as best hybrids for exploitation of grain quality traits since they revealed significant sca effects at 1% probability level (p = 0.01) for eight, eight and five grain quality traits, respectively
Optimisation of substrate angles for multi-material and multi-functional inkjet printing
Three dimensional inkjet printing of multiple materials for electronics applications are challenging due to the limited material availability, inconsistencies in layer thickness between dissimilar materials and the need to expose the printed tracks of metal nanoparticles to temperature above 100 °C for sintering. It is envisaged that instead of printing a dielectric and a conductive material on the same plane, by printing conductive tracks on an angled dielectric surface, the required number of silver layers and consequently, the exposure of the polymer to high temperature and the build time of the component can be significantly reduced. Conductive tracks printed with a fixed print height (FH) showed significantly better resolution for all angles than the fixed slope (FS) sample where the print height varied to maintain the slope length. The electrical resistance of the tracks remained under 10Ω up to 60° for FH; whereas for the FS samples, the resistance remained under 10Ω for samples up to 45°. Thus by fixing the print height to 4 mm, precise tracks with low resistance can be printed at substrate angles up to 60°. By adopting this approach, the build height “Z” can be quickly attained with less exposure of the polymer to high temperature

Reduced mechanical oscillations using the MAGLEV concept in vertical axis wind turbine
Due to its low power design applications, the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is more commonly employed for the standalone applications. The power generating capability in wind turbines is influenced by the mechanical dimensions of the blade including the shape of the blade and the angle of attack. The appropriate design of the blade shape and position tends to improvise the efficiency even at low wind speed. Initially the shape of the airfoil is designed and analyses and the position for a five blade structure is investigated. The degree of impact at angle of 30° is found to have the highest lift coefficient for the chosen airfoil structure. The use of MAGLEV concept in the VAWT reduces the vibration by 37.5%. Experimental results are presented with and without MAGLEV imported to the VAWT design. Also it is measured that the power generated with maglev system is increase by 12 % compare to the normal wind turbine
Expansion of Pathogen-Specific T-Helper 1 and T-Helper 17 Cells in Pulmonary Tuberculosis With Coincident Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Background. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for the development of active pulmonary tuberculosis, although the immunological mechanisms underlying this interaction remain unexplored. The influence of poorly controlled diabetes on pathogen-specific T-helper 1 (Th1) and T-helper 17 (Th17) responses have not been examined. Methods. To identify the role of Th1 and Th17 cells in tuberculosis with coincident DM, we examined mycobacteria-specific immune responses in the whole blood of individuals who had tuberculosis with DM and compared them to those in individuals who had tuberculosis without DM. Results. Tuberculosis coincident with DM is characterized by elevated frequencies of monofunctional and dual-functional CD4(+) Th1 cells following Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen stimulation and elevated frequencies of Th17 subsets at both baseline and following antigen stimulation. This was associated with increased systemic (plasma) levels of both Th1 and Th17 cytokines and decreased baseline frequencies of natural regulatory T cells but not interleukin 10 or transforming growth factor β. Conclusions. Therefore, our data reveal that tuberculosis in persons with DM is characterized by elevated frequencies of Th1 and Th17 cells, indicating that DM is associated with an alteration in the immune response to tuberculosis, leading to a biased induction of Th1- and Th17-mediated cellular responses and likely contributing to increased immune pathology in M. tuberculosis infection
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Coincident with Pulmonary Tuberculosis Is Associated with Heightened Systemic Type 1, Type 17, and Other Proinflammatory Cytokines
Rationale: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for the development of active tuberculosis, although the biological basis underlying this susceptibility remains poorly characterized. Objectives and Methods: To identify the influence of coincident diabetes mellitus on cytokine levels in pulmonary tuberculosis, we examined circulating levels of a panel of cytokines and chemokines in the plasma of individuals with tuberculosis with diabetes and compared them with those of individuals without diabetes. Measurements and Main Results: Tuberculosis with diabetes is characterized by elevated circulating levels of type 1 (IFN-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, and IL-2), type 2 (IL-5), and type 17 (IL-17A) cytokines but decreased circulating levels of IL-22. This was associated with increased systemic levels of other proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-18) and an antiinflammatory cytokine (IL-10) but not type 1 IFNs. Moreover, tuberculosis antigen–stimulated whole blood also showed increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Finally, type 1 and type 17 cytokines in plasma exhibit a significant positive correlation with hemoglobin A1C levels, indicating that impaired control of diabetes is associated with this proinflammatory milieu. Multivariate analysis revealed that the association of proinflammatory cytokines with diabetes mellitus was not influenced by age, sex, or other metabolic parameters. Conclusions: Our data reveal that tuberculosis with diabetes is characterized by heightened cytokine responsiveness, indicating that chronic inflammation underlying type 2 diabetes potentially contributes to increased immune pathology and poor control in tuberculosis infection
Altered CD8+ T cell frequency and function in tuberculous lymphadenitis
CD8(+) T cells secreting Type1 and Type 17 cytokines and cytotoxic molecules play a major role in immunity and protection against pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), although their role in tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL) is not well known. To identify the distribution and function of CD8(+) T cells expressing Type1, Type 2 and Type 17 cytokines and cytotoxic molecules in TBL, we examined baseline and mycobacterial–antigen specific immune responses in the whole blood of individuals with PTB and compared them with TBL. TBL is characterized by elevated frequencies of baseline and mycobacterial-antigen stimulated CD8(+) T cells expressing Type 1 (IL-2 and TNFα) and Type 17 (IL-17A and IL-17F) cytokines in comparison to PTB individuals. In contrast, TBL individuals exhibited diminished frequency of CD8(+) T cells expressing perforin, granzyme B and CD107a. The blockade of IL-1R and IL-6R during antigenic stimulation resulted in significantly diminished frequencies of CD8(+) T cells expressing Type 1 and Type 17 cytokines in TBL. Therefore, our data suggest that TBL is characterized by an IL-1 and IL-6 dependent expansion of CD8(+) T cells expressing Type 1 and Type 17 cytokines as well as altered frequencies of cytotoxic molecules, reflecting an important association of these cells with the pathogenesis of TBL
Measuring bank efficiency: DEA application
The paper aims to improve the methodology of measuring efficiency of Latvian banks. Efficiency scores were calculated with application of non-parametric frontier technique Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Input-oriented DEA model under Variable Returns to Scale (VRS) assumption was used. Potential model variables were selected based on the intermediation and profitability approach. Fourteen alternative models with different inputs-outputs combinations were developed for the research purposes. To substantiate the variables selection for DEA model the received data was processed, using such methods, as correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, analysis of mean values, and two-samples Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The research results assisted the authors in providing general recommendations about the variables selection for DEA application in the Latvian banking sector. The present research contributes to the existing analytical data on bank performance in Latvia. The empirical findings provide a background for further studies, in particular, the efficiency of Latvian banks could be analysed in the extended time period
