    Noncommutative ampleness for multiple divisors

    Get PDF
The twisted homogeneous coordinate ring is one of the basic constructions of the noncommutative projective geometry of Artin, Van den Bergh, and others. Chan generalized this construction to the multi-homogeneous case, using a concept of right ampleness for a finite collection of invertible sheaves and automorphisms of a projective scheme. From this he derives that certain multi-homogeneous rings, such as tensor products of twisted homogeneous coordinate rings, are right noetherian. We show that right and left ampleness are equivalent and that there is a simple criterion for such ampleness. Thus we find under natural hypotheses that multi-homogeneous coordinate rings are noetherian and have integer GK-dimension.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, minor corrections, to appear in J. Algebr

Modelling the effect of prebiotics, probiotics and other functional additives on the growth, feed intake and feed conversion of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles

Dietary supplementation of aquafeeds with functional additives is a commonly employed strategy in order to reduce the potential negative effects associated to fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) replacement by alternative protein and oil sources. Nevertheless, the wide variety of functional ingredients with different bioactive properties hinders the selection of appropriate dietary supplementation strategies on feed formulation. The present study aimed to develop an observational multiple-linear regression (MLR) model to identify the effects of a variety of functional ingredients supplementation on European sea bass juveniles (Dicentrarchus labrax) growth performance and feed utilization. A literature survey was conducted gathering a total of 61 dietary treatments. The functional ingredients were classified in three main groups, namely, “probiotics”, “prebiotics” or “others” (including plant derived compounds such as essential oils, extracts and powders). Three different MLR were obtained and validated, allowing to describe the effects of functional ingredients supplementation on fish specific growth rate (SGR) (with a final R-squared (R2) = 0.96, adjusted R-squared (adj R2) = 0.92 and a p-value= 7.21E- 08)), fish feed intake (FI) (R2 = 0.97, adj R2 = 0.95 and a p-value= 5.42E-12)) and fish feed conversion ratio (FCR) (R2 = 0.90, adj R2 = 0.80 and a p-value= 2.02E-05)). MLR model trimming, allowed the detection of a significant positive correlation (cor) between dietary prebiotics supplementation and SGR (cor= 0.32, p-value= 8.52E-04). On the contrary, prebiotic supplementation presented a negative correlation with fish FI (cor= − 0.44, p-value= 6.27E-05) and FCR (cor= − 0.41, p-value= 8.96E-05).This work was founded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 818367; AquaIMPACT—Genomic and nutritional innovations for genetically superior farmed fish to improve efficiency in European aquaculture. Evaluation in a dog model of three antimicrobial glassy coatings: Prevention of bone loss around implants and microbial assessments

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.-- et al.[Objectives]: The aim of the present study is to evaluate, in a ligature-induced peri-implantitis model, the efficacy of three antimicrobial glassy coatings in the prevention of biofilm formation, intrasulcular bacterial growth and the resulting peri-implant bone loss. [Methods]: Mandibular premolars were bilaterally extracted from five beagle dogs. Four dental implants were inserted on each hemiarch. Eight weeks after, one control zirconia abutment and three with different bactericidal coatings (G1n-Ag, ZnO35, G3) were connected. After a plaque control period, bacterial accumulation was allowed and biofilm formation on abutments was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Peri-implantitis was induced by cotton ligatures. Microbial samples and peri-implant crestal bone levels of all implant sites were obtained before, during and after the breakdown period. [Results]: During experimental induce peri-implantitis: colony forming units counts from intrasulcular microbial samples at implants with G1n-Ag coated abutment remained close to the basal inoculum; G3 and ZnO35 coatings showed similar low counts; and anaerobic bacterias counts at control abutments exhibited a logarithmic increase by more than 2. Bone loss during passive breakdown period was no statistically significant. Additional bone loss occurred during ligature-induce breakdown: 0.71 (SD 0.48) at G3 coating, 0.57 (SD 0.36) at ZnO35 coating, 0.74 (SD 0.47) at G1n-Ag coating, and 1.29 (SD 0.45) at control abutments; and statistically significant differences (p<0.001) were found. The lowest bone loss at the end of the experiment was exhibited by implants dressing G3 coated abutments (mean 2.1; SD 0.42). [Significance]: Antimicrobial glassy coatings could be a useful tool to ward off, diminish or delay periimplantitis progression. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) and The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) under the projects MAT2012-38645 and 201360E012 respectively. On the transparency of nanostructured alumina: Rayleigh-Gans model for anisotropic spheres

    Get PDF
14 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas.A light scattering model under the Rayleigh-Gans-Debye approximation has been developed for polycristalline alumina. The model states that transmittance of dense alumina ceramics basically depends not only on the maximum grain size but also on the preferential orientation of their c-axis, or texture. The effect of texture in transparency has been experimentally measured on several dense alumina samples with different grain size and compared to that obtained from x-ray Rietveld refinements with a very good agreement. The Rayleigh-Gans-Debye approximation also allows to represent optical data in a very simple way (logarithm of transmittance vs. the inverse of the wavelength square). Using these variables, a straight line is obtained for the Rayleigh-Gans-Debye approximation, its slope being proportional to the maximum grain size and textural parameter. Deviation from this law implies the presence of pores or grain of extremely large size.Peer reviewe

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of a Silver-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite

    Get PDF
A silver-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite has been obtained by a colloidal chemical route and subsequent reduction process in H2/Ar atmosphere at C. This material has been characterized by TEM, XRD, and UV-Visible spectroscopy, showing the silver nanoparticles (65 nm) supported onto the HA particles (130 nm) surface without a high degree of agglomeration. The bactericidal effect against common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria has been also investigated. The results indicated a high antimicrobial activity for Staphylococcus aureus, Pneumococcus and Escherichia coli, so this material can be a promising antimicrobial biomaterial for implant and reconstructive surgery applications. This work was supported by Bioker Research S.L. and by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science under Project CENIT-INTELIMPLANT (ref.: 20071210).
