    The Use of Subcarriers in Future DSN Missions

    The performance of deep space telemetry signals that employ a residual carrier modulation technique is compared in the presence and absence of a subcarrier. When the subcarrier is present, the performance for the resulting pulse-coded modulation/phase-shift keyed/phase-modulated (PCM/PSK/PM) scheme is evaluated for both sine wave and square wave subcarriers and non-return-to zero (NRZ) data. When the subcarrier is absent, the performance for the resulting PCM/PM technique is evaluated for both the NRZ and the bi-phase data format. The comparison is based on telemetry performance as well as bandwidth efficiency. The first criterion is characterized in terms of the symbol error rate (SER) as a function of symbol SNR, loop bandwidth-to-data rate ratio, and modulation index. The bandwidth efficiency is characterized by the occupancy factor. The results of both the analysis and measurements show that when the interference-to-carrier ratio (ICR) is less than -15 dB, the performance degradation in the absence of a subcarrier is negligible. Various combinations of loop bandwidth-to-data rate ratios and modulation indices that achieve this performance are derived and listed. Bandwidth occupancy comparison indicates that PCM/PM/NRZ is the most efficient in this regard. Therefore, by eliminating the subcarrier and using the PCM/PM/NRZ scheme, many advantages can be realized without any sacrifice in performance

    Residual and suppressed-carrier arraying techniques for deep-space communications

    Three techniques that use carrier information from multiple antennas to enhance carrier acquisition and tracking are presented. These techniques in combination with baseband combining are analyzed and simulated for residual and suppressed-carrier modulation. It is shown that the carrier arraying using a single carrier loop technique can acquire and track the carrier even when any single antenna in the array cannot do so by itself. The carrier aiding and carrier arraying using multiple carrier loop techniques, on the other hand, are shown to lock on the carrier only when one of the array elements has sufficient margin to acquire the carrier on its own

    Clinical characterization of a family with a mutation in the uromodulin (Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein) gene.BackgroundWe have recently identified a mutation in the uromodulin gene in a large family affected with hyperuricemia, gout, and renal failure. The purpose of this investigation is to provide a comprehensive characterization of the clinical findings of this syndrome in family members who had a mutation in the uromodulin gene.MethodsAn extended family suffering from hyperuricemia and gout was identified by a local practitioner. After consent was obtained, patients provided a directed clinical history and blood and urine specimens for chemical and genetic testing. All family members were tested for the presence of uromodulin gene mutations by direct DNA sequence analysis. The clinical and biochemical characteristics of family members carrying the affected mutation were then investigated.ResultsThirty-nine family members were found to have an exon 5 uromodulin gene mutation (g.1966 1922 del), and 29 unaffected family members were identified. The cardinal clinical features in individuals with the uromodulin mutation included hyperuricemia, decreased fractional excretion of uric acid, and chronic interstitial renal disease leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the fifth through seventh decade. Women did not always develop hyperuricemia or gout, but still developed progressive chronic renal failure.ConclusionMutation of the uromodulin gene resulted in hyperuricemia, reduced fractional excretion of uric acid, and renal failure. Genetic testing will be required to definitively identify individuals suffering from this condition. We are interested in studying other families that may suffer from this condition and would appreciate any such referrals

    Solving large 0–1 multidimensional knapsack problems by a new simplified binary artificial fish swarm algorithm

    The artificial fish swarm algorithm has recently been emerged in continuous global optimization. It uses points of a population in space to identify the position of fish in the school. Many real-world optimization problems are described by 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problems that are NP-hard. In the last decades several exact as well as heuristic methods have been proposed for solving these problems. In this paper, a new simpli ed binary version of the artificial fish swarm algorithm is presented, where a point/ fish is represented by a binary string of 0/1 bits. Trial points are created by using crossover and mutation in the different fi sh behavior that are randomly selected by using two user de ned probability values. In order to make the points feasible the presented algorithm uses a random heuristic drop item procedure followed by an add item procedure aiming to increase the profit throughout the adding of more items in the knapsack. A cyclic reinitialization of 50% of the population, and a simple local search that allows the progress of a small percentage of points towards optimality and after that refines the best point in the population greatly improve the quality of the solutions. The presented method is tested on a set of benchmark instances and a comparison with other methods available in literature is shown.     Stir bar-sorptive extraction, solid phase extraction and liquid-liquid extraction for levetiracetam determination in human plasma: comparing recovery rates

    Levetiracetam (LEV), an antiepileptic drug (AED) with favorable pharmacokinetic profile, is increasingly being used in clinical practice, although information on its metabolism and disposition are still being generated. Therefore a simple, robust and fast liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography method is described that could be used for both pharmacokinetic and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) purposes. Moreover, recovery rates of LEV in plasma were compared among LLE, stir bar-sorptive extraction (SBSE), and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Solvent extraction with dichloromethane yielded a plasma residue free from usual interferences such as commonly co-prescribed AEDs, and recoveries around 90% (LLE), 60% (SPE) and 10% (SBSE). Separation was obtained using reverse phase Select B column with ultraviolet detection (235 nm). Mobile phase consisted of methanol:sodium acetate buffer 0.125 M pH 4.4 (20:80, v/v). The method was linear over a range of 2.8-220.0 µg mL-1. The intra- and inter-assay precision and accuracy were studied at three concentrations; relative standard deviation was less than 10%. The limit of quantification was 2.8 µg mL-1. This robust method was successfully applied to analyze plasma samples from patients with epilepsy and therefore might be used for pharmacokinetic and TDM purposes.</p

    Neuroimaging correlates of false memory in 'Alzheimer's disease: A preliminary systematic review

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterised by episodic memory impairment, but people also experience memory distortions, including false memories, which can impact on safety and reduce functioning. Understanding the neural networks that underpin false memories could help to predict the need for intervention and guide development of cognitive strategies to reduce memory errors. However, there is a relative absence of research into how the neuropathology of AD contributes to false memory generation. This paper systematically reviews the methodology and outcomes of studies investigating the neuroimaging correlates of false memory in AD. Four studies using structural imaging and three studies using functional imaging were identified. Studies were heterogenous in methodology and received mostly ‘weak’ quality assessment ratings. Combined, and consistent with neuroimaging findings in non-AD populations, results from identified studies provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that medial temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex dysfunction may lead to generation of false memories in AD. However, the small number of studies and significant heterogeneity within them means further study is necessary to assess replicability of results
