    Habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic factors affect wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris occupancy and detectability on Mt Etna

    Knowledge of patterns of occupancy is crucial for planning sound biological management and for identifying areas which require paramount conservation attention. The European wildcat Felis silvestris is an elusive carnivore and is classified as ‘least concern’ on the IUCN red list, but with a decreasing population trend in some areas. Sicily hosts a peculiar wildcat population, which deserves conservation and management actions, due to its isolation from the mainland. Patterns of occupancy for wildcats are unknown in Italy, and especially in Sicily. We aimed to identify which ecological drivers determined wildcat occurrence on Mt Etna and to provide conservation actions to promote the wildcats’ long-term survival in this peculiar environment. The genetic identity of the wildcat population was confirmed through a scat-collection which detected 22 different wildcat individuals. We analysed wildcat detections collected by 91 cameras using an occupancy frame work to assess which covariates influenced the detection (p) and the occupancy (ψ) estimates. We recorded 70 detections of the target species from 38 cameras within 3377 trap-days. Wildcat detection was positively influenced by the distance to the major paved roads and negatively affected by the presence of humans. Wildcat occupancy was positively associated with mixed forest and negatively influenced by pine forest, fragmentation of mixed forest and altitude. A spatially explicit predicted occupancy map, validated using an independent dataset of wildcat presence records, showed that higher occupancy estimates were scattered, mainly located on the north face and at lower altitude. Habitat fragmentation has been claimed as a significant threat for the wildcat and this is the first study that has ascertained this as a limiting factor for wildcat occurrence. Conservation actions should promote interconnectivity between areas with high predicted wildcat occupancy while minimising the loss of habitat

    SEISMIC VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT OF FES MEDINA IN MOROCCO

    Abstract. The assessment of seismic vulnerability in the Maghreb area is not yet fully investigated, especially considering the important connection between the vulnerability and traditional housing or construction local types. This paper proposes a methodology for the assessment of seismic vulnerability at territorial scale that is calibrated on the specific characteristics of historical settlements in the North of Morocco, mostly made of patio buildings in aggregate. The proposed methodology is structured to be extended and replicated in other similar contexts and is based on the Vulnerability Index approach proposed by the National Group for Earthquake Defence (Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dai Terremoti, GNDT). This method was applied to the Medina of Fes, UNESCO World Heritage site, which has suffered severe damages from historical earthquakes. The study allowed the realization of vulnerability and fragility curves, damage scenarios for different seismic intensity and loss scenarios. The proposed methodology was applied a second time to the case study after a simulated structural retrofitting intervention. The results of this second application allowed to validate the guidelines and the reinforcement strategies calibrated on local construction culture. The results of the vulnerability assessment are also presented through maps in the Geographic Information System (GIS) environment

    Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from the Blazar Markarian 421

    Very high energy gamma-ray emission from the BL Lac object Markarian 421 has been detected over three observing seasons on 59 nights between April 1992 and June 1994 with the Whipple 10-meter imaging Cherenkov telescope. During its initial detection in 1992, its flux above 500 GeV was 1.6×\times1011^{-11}photons cm2^{-2} s1^{-1}. Observations in 1993 confirmed this level of emission. For observations made between December 1993 and April 1994, its intensity was a factor of 2.2±\pm0.5 lower. Observations on 14 and 15 May, 1994 showed an increase over this quiescent level by a factor of \sim10 (Kerrick et al. 1995). This strong outburst suggests that 4 episodes of increased flux measurements on similar time scales in 1992 and 1994 may be attributed to somewhat weaker outbursts. The variability of the TeV gamma-ray emission from Markarian 421 stands in contrast to EGRET observations (Lin et al. 1994) which show no evidence for variability.Comment: gzip compressed tar file including LaTeX text and 4 postscript figures (14 pages total incl. 4 tables), accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.     Comparison between Laparoscopic and Robotic Approach for Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Endometrial Carcinoma Women

    Robotic surgery has been approved as an alternative to laparoscopy to improve surgical outcomes. There is neither a consensus nor a systematic assessment of the literature about the superiority of the robotic approach over the laparoscopic one for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in endometrial carcinoma (EC) women. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare the laparoscopic and robotic approaches for SLN biopsy in EC patients. Five electronic databases were queried from their inception to May 2022 for peer-reviewed studies, comparing such approaches in SLN biopsy in EC patients. The rate of detected SLN, dissected SLN, intraoperative and postoperative complications, conversion to laparotomy, number of dissected SLN, and SLN identification and dissection time were compared between the laparoscopic and robotic approaches for SLN biopsy in EC patients. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated when possible. Two studies with 660 EC women (364 who had undergone laparoscopy, and 296 who had robotic surgery) were included. No assessed outcome showed significant differences between the two approaches. In conclusion, the laparoscopic and robotic approaches for SLN biopsy in EC patients appeared to not differ, in terms of SLN detection, intraoperative and postoperative complications, conversion to laparotomy, number of dissected SLN, and SLN identification and dissection time
