MAGDA: A Mobile Agent based Grid Architecture
Mobile agents mean both a technology
and a programming paradigm. They allow for a
flexible approach which can alleviate a number
of issues present in distributed and Grid-based
systems, by means of features such as migration,
cloning, messaging and other provided mechanisms.
In this paper we describe an architecture
(MAGDA – Mobile Agent based Grid Architecture)
we have designed and we are currently
developing to support programming and execution
of mobile agent based application upon Grid
systems
Dynamics of a particle confined in a two-dimensional dilating and deforming domain
Some recent results concerning a particle confined in a one-dimensional box
with moving walls are briefly reviewed. By exploiting the same techniques used
for the 1D problem, we investigate the behavior of a quantum particle confined
in a two-dimensional box (a 2D billiard) whose walls are moving, by recasting
the relevant mathematical problem with moving boundaries in the form of a
problem with fixed boundaries and time-dependent Hamiltonian. Changes of the
shape of the box are shown to be important, as it clearly emerges from the
comparison between the "pantographic", case (same shape of the box through all
the process) and the case with deformation.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
A critical analysis of happiness and well-being. Where we stand now, where we need to go
This paper aims to critically analyse happiness and well-being to find novel ways for theorizing and promoting better life conditions for individuals and societies. The necessity to shift from a subjective view of individual well-being to a more social and contextual version of these constructs is the common thread running throughout the whole work. To this end, the first part introduces the reader into the complexity of the happiness and well-being scholarship by outlining some of the most relevant approaches developed by the psychological and economic literature. After highlighting the limitations of both disciplines, the second part of the paper presents some alternative models, namely the Feminist Economics, the Capabilities Approach, and the model of Four Qualities of Life. In addition to these, we will draw attention, in the last section, to the Critical Community Psychology approach to happiness and well-being. Our main argument is that this emerging discipline bears the potential to frame the pursuit of the good life in a whole new fashion that takes into account a) contextual features, in particular the recourses that a given environment offers and the opportunity to access them, b) the role of power, justice, and liberation, and c) the value of participation, reciprocity, and ethics of care. Current limitations of CCP are also discussed and future directions outlined

Nanoparticle Dynamics in Oxide-Based Memristive Devices
In microelectronics a device's functionality is shaped by its interfaces. While classical semiconductor research aimed for preparation of nearly ideal interfaces, the emerging paradigm is that new functionalities can arise from interfaces with less perfection. Memristive devices rely on the control of such less-perfect interfaces. They are the building blocks for a new range of applications, including new memory and logic architectures and neuromorphic computing. Research on memristive systems and applications demands an interdisciplinary approach across disciplines including solid-state physics, electrochemistry and biochemistry. Advanced metrology is the key for a better understanding and finally a better control of such interfaces and novel device technologies. In this featured article we highlight such recent advances in characterization and the understanding of electrochemical reactions on the (sub-) nanoscale and the dynamics of the nanoparticles and clusters involved during operation of memristive devices acting as a model system. We focus particularly on in operando real time monitoring of the memristive switching effect by transmission electron microscopy and a novel plasmon enhanced spectroscopy method
Retinoic acid receptors in acute myeloid leukemia therapy
Retinoic acid (RA) signaling pathways regulate fundamental biological processes, such as cell proliferation, development, differentiation, and apoptosis. Retinoid receptors (RARs and RXRs) are ligand-dependent transcription factors. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is the principal endogenous ligand for the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) and is produced by the enzymatic oxidation of dietary vitamin A, whose deficiency is associated with several pathological conditions. Differentiation therapy using ATRA revolutionized the outcome of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), although attempts to replicate these results in other cancer types have been met with more modest results. A better knowledge of RA signaling in different leukemia contexts is required to improve initial designs. Here, we will review the RA signaling pathway in normal and malignant hematopoiesis, and will discuss the advantages and the limitations related to retinoid therapy in acute myeloid leukemia
Distance Metric Learning using Graph Convolutional Networks: Application to Functional Brain Networks
Evaluating similarity between graphs is of major importance in several
computer vision and pattern recognition problems, where graph representations
are often used to model objects or interactions between elements. The choice of
a distance or similarity metric is, however, not trivial and can be highly
dependent on the application at hand. In this work, we propose a novel metric
learning method to evaluate distance between graphs that leverages the power of
convolutional neural networks, while exploiting concepts from spectral graph
theory to allow these operations on irregular graphs. We demonstrate the
potential of our method in the field of connectomics, where neuronal pathways
or functional connections between brain regions are commonly modelled as
graphs. In this problem, the definition of an appropriate graph similarity
function is critical to unveil patterns of disruptions associated with certain
brain disorders. Experimental results on the ABIDE dataset show that our method
can learn a graph similarity metric tailored for a clinical application,
improving the performance of a simple k-nn classifier by 11.9% compared to a

From "Gomorrah Domain" to "Don Peppe Diana Lands". A Southern Italian Experience of Work-Based Liberation, Community Networking, and Well Being
The article describes working experiences in relation to empowering activities, which have been carried out in a local community in the province of Caserta (in Southern Italy), a place characterized by the widespread presence of organized criminal groups. In this study, workplace is intended as a community network aimed at the promotion of coscientization, liberation, and well-being. Specifically, this paper features initiatives and projects aimed at establishing new community values through a re-construction of a work-based social system standing against criminal clans, which tend to dominate not only economical transactions but also civil life
