The Display of Photographic-Quality Images on the Web: A Comparison of Two Technologies
Downloading Medical Images on the Web Creates Certain Compromises. the Tradeoff is between Higher Resolution and Faster Download Times. as Resolution Increases, Download Times Increase. High-resolution (Photographic Quality) Electronic Images Can Potentially Play a Key Role in Medical Education and Patient Care. on the Internet, Images Are Typically Formatted as Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) or the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) Flies. However, These Formats Are Associated with Considerable Data Loss in Both Color Depth and Image Resolution. Furthermore, These Images Are Available in a Single Resolution and Have No Capability of Allowing the User to Adjust Resolution as Needed. Images in the Photo Compact Disc (PCD) Format Have Higher Resolutions Than GIF or JPEG, But Suffer the Disadvantage of Large File Sizes Leading to Long Download Times on the Web. Furthermore, Native Web Browsers Are Not Currently Able to Read PCD Flies. the FlashPix Format (FPX) Offers Distinct Advantages over the PCD, GIF, and JPEG Formats for Display of High-Resolution Images on the Web. a Java Applet Can Be Easily Downloaded for Viewing FPX Images. Using Clinical Decision Support to Maintain Medication and Problem Lists: A Pilot Study to Yield Higher Patient Safety
To Investigate Whether Clinical Decision Support that Automates the Matching of Ordered Drugs to Problems (Clinical Diagnoses) on the Problem List Can Enhance the Maintenance of Both Medication and Problem Lists in the Electronic Medical Record, We Designed a Clinical Decision Support System to Match Ordered Drugs on the Medication List and Ongoing Problems on the Problem List. We Evaluated the Capability and Performance of This Clinical Decision Support System in Medication-Problem Matching using Physician Expert Chart Audits to Match Ordered Drugs to Ongoing Clinical Problems. a Clinical Decision Support System Was Shown to Be Useful in Improving Medication-Problem Matches in 140 Randomly Selected Audited Patient Encounters in Three Inpatient Units. Enhanced Maintenance of Both the Medication and Problem Lists Can Permit the Exploitation of Advanced Decision Support Strategies that Yield Higher Patient Safety. © 2008 IEEE
A New Sample of Cool Subdwarfs from SDSS: Properties and Kinematics
We present a new sample of M subdwarfs compiled from the 7th data release of
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. With 3517 new subdwarfs, this new sample
significantly increases the number of spectroscopically confirmed low-mass
subdwarfs. This catalog also includes 905 extreme and 534 ultra sudwarfs. We
present the entire catalog including observed and derived quantities, and
template spectra created from co-added subdwarf spectra. We show color-color
and reduced proper motion diagrams of the three metallicity classes, which are
shown to separate from the disk dwarf population. The extreme and ultra
subdwarfs are seen at larger values of reduced proper motion as expected for
more dynamically heated populations. We determine 3D kinematics for all of the
stars with proper motions. The color-magnitude diagrams show a clear separation
of the three metallicity classes with the ultra and extreme subdwarfs being
significantly closer to the main sequence than the ordinary subdwarfs. All
subdwarfs lie below (fainter) and to the left (bluer) of the main sequence.
Based on the average velocities and their dispersions, the extreme
and ultra subdwarfs likely belong to the Galactic halo, while the ordinary
subdwarfs are likely part of the old Galactic (or thick) disk. An extensive
activity analysis of subdwarfs is performed using H emission and 208
active subdwarfs are found. We show that while the activity fraction of
subdwarfs rises with spectral class and levels off at the latest spectral
classes, consistent with the behavior of M dwarfs, the extreme and ultra

Ages of White Dwarf-Red Subdwarf Systems
We provide the first age estimates for two recently discovered white
dwarf-red subdwarf systems, LHS 193AB and LHS 300AB. These unusual systems
provide a new opportunity for linking the reliable age estimates for the white
dwarfs to the (measurable) metallicities of the red subdwarfs. We have obtained
precise photometry in the bands and spectroscopy covering
from 6000\AA to 9000\AA for the two new systems, as well as for a comparison
white dwarf-main sequence red dwarf system, GJ 283 AB. Using model grids
available in the literature, we estimate the cooling age as well as
temperature, surface gravity, mass, progenitor mass and {\it total} lifetimes
of the white dwarfs. The results indicate that the two new systems are probably
ancient thick disk objects with ages of at least 6-9 Gyr. We also conduct
searches of red dwarf and white dwarf compendia from SDSS data and the
L{\'e}pine Shara Proper Motion (LSPM) catalog for additional common proper
motion white dwarf-red subdwarf systems. Only seven new candidate systems are
found, which indicates the rarity of these systems.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
MV3: A new word based stream cipher using rapid mixing and revolving buffers
MV3 is a new word based stream cipher for encrypting long streams of data. A
direct adaptation of a byte based cipher such as RC4 into a 32- or 64-bit word
version will obviously need vast amounts of memory. This scaling issue
necessitates a look for new components and principles, as well as mathematical
analysis to justify their use. Our approach, like RC4's, is based on rapidly
mixing random walks on directed graphs (that is, walks which reach a random
state quickly, from any starting point). We begin with some well understood
walks, and then introduce nonlinearity in their steps in order to improve
security and show long term statistical correlations are negligible. To
minimize the short term correlations, as well as to deter attacks using
equations involving successive outputs, we provide a method for sequencing the
outputs derived from the walk using three revolving buffers. The cipher is fast
-- it runs at a speed of less than 5 cycles per byte on a Pentium IV processor.
A word based cipher needs to output more bits per step, which exposes more
correlations for attacks. Moreover we seek simplicity of construction and
transparent analysis. To meet these requirements, we use a larger state and
claim security corresponding to only a fraction of it. Our design is for an
adequately secure word-based cipher; our very preliminary estimate puts the

The Solar Neighborhood XIII: Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9-m Program -- Stars with mu >= 1"/year (MOTION Sample)
We present the first set of definitive trigonometric parallaxes and proper
motions from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax Investigation
(CTIOPI). Full astrometric reductions for the program are discussed, including
methods of reference stars selection, differential color refraction
corrections, and conversion of relative to absolute parallax. Using data
acquired at the 0.9-m at CTIO, full astrometric solutions and
photometry are presented for 36 red and white dwarf stellar systems with proper
motions faster than 1\farcs0/yr. Of these, thirty three systems have the first
ever trigonometric parallaxes, which comprise 41% of MOTION systems (those with
proper motions greater than 1\farcs0/yr) south of 0 that have no
parallaxes. Four of the systems are new members of the RECONS 10 pc sample for
which the first accurate trigonometric parallaxes are published here: DENIS
J1048-3956 (4.04 0.03 pc), GJ 1128 (LHS 271, 6.53 0.10 pc), GJ 1068
(LHS 22, 6.97 0.09 pc), and GJ 1123 (LHS 263, 9.02 0.16 pc). In
addition, two red subdwarf-white dwarf pairs, LHS 193AB and LHS 300AB, are
identified. The white dwarf secondaries fall in a previously uncharted region

A spectroscopic and proper motion search of Sloan Digital Sky Survey : red subdwarfs in binary systems
Red subdwarfs in binary systems are crucial for both model calibration and spectral classification. We search for red subdwarfs in binary systems from a sample of high proper motion objects with Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy. We present here discoveries from this search, as well as highlight several additional objects of interest. We find 30 red subdwarfs in wide binary systems including: two with spectral type of esdM5.5, 6 companions to white dwarfs and 3 carbon-enhanced red subdwarfs with normal red subdwarf companions. 15 red subdwarfs in our sample are partially resolved close binary systems. With this binary sample, we estimate the low limit of the red subdwarf binary fraction of similar to 10 per cent. We find that the binary fraction goes down with decreasing masses and metallicities of red subdwarfs. A spectroscopic esdK7 subdwarf + white dwarf binary candidate is also reported. 30 new M subdwarfs have spectral type of >= M6 in our sample. We also derive relationships between spectral types and absolute magnitudes in the optical and near-infrared for M and L subdwarfs, and we present an M subdwarf sample with measured U, V, W space velocities.Peer reviewe
