Bayesian Approach to Find a Long-Term Trend in Erratic Polarization Variations Observed in Blazars
We developed a method to separate a long-term trend from observed temporal
variations of polarization in blazars using a Bayesian approach. The temporal
variation of the polarization vector is apparently erratic in most blazars,
while several objects occasionally exhibited systematic variations, for
example, an increase of the polarization degree associated with a flare of the
total flux. We assume that the observed polarization vector is a superposition
of distinct two components, a long-term trend and a short-term variation
component responsible for short flares. Our Bayesian model estimates the
long-term trend which satisfies the condition that the total flux correlates
with the polarized flux of the short-term component. We demonstrate that
assumed long-term polarization components are successfully separated by the
Bayesian model for artificial data. We applied this method to photopolarimetric
data of OJ 287, S5 0716+714, and S2 0109+224. Simple and systematic long-term
trends were obtained in OJ 287 and S2 0109+224, while no such a trend was
identified in S5 0716+714. We propose that the apparently erratic variations of
polarization in OJ 287 and S2 0109+224 are due to the presence of the long-term
polarization component. The behavior of polarization in S5 0716+714 during our
observation period implies the presence of a number of polarization components

Photopolarimetric Monitoring of Blazars in the Optical and Near-Infrared Bands with the Kanata Telescope. I. Correlations between Flux, Color, and Polarization
We report on the correlation between the flux, color and polarization
variations on time scales of days--months in blazars, and discuss their
universal aspects. We performed monitoring of 42 blazars in the optical and
near-infrared bands from 2008 to 2010 using TRISPEC attached to the "Kanata"
1.5-m telescope. We found that 28 blazars exhibited "bluer-when-brighter"
trends in their whole or a part of time-series data sets. This corresponds to
88% of objects that were observed for >10 days. Thus, our observation
unambiguously confirmed that the "bluer-when-brighter" trend is common in the
emission from blazar jets. This trend was apparently generated by a variation
component with a constant and relatively blue color and an underlying red
component. Prominent short-term flares on time scales of days--weeks tended to
exhibit a spectral hysteresis; their rising phases were bluer than their decay
phases around the flare maxima. In contrast to the strong flux--color
correlation, the correlation of the flux and polarization degree was relatively
weak; only 10 objects showed significant positive correlations. Rotations of
polarization were detected only in three objects: PKS 1510-089, 3C 454.3, and
PKS 1749+096, and possibly in S5 0716+714. We also investigated the dependence
of the degree of variability on the luminosity and the synchrotron peak
frequency, \nu_peak. As a result, we found that lower luminosity and higher
\nu_peak objects had smaller variations in their amplitudes both in the flux,
color, and polarization degree. Our observation suggests the presence of
several distinct emitting sources, which have different variation time-scales,
colors, and polarizations. We propose that the energy injection by, for
example, internal shocks in relativistic shells is a major factor for blazar

Optical polarimetry of the blazar CGRaBS~ J0211+1051 from MIRO
We report the detection of high polarization in the first detailed optical
linear polarization measurements on the BL Lac object CGRaBS J0211+1051, which
flared in -rays on 2011 January 23 as reported by Fermi. The
observations were made during 2011 January 30 - February 3 using
photo-polarimeter mounted at the 1.2m telescope of Mt Abu InfraRed
Observatory(MIRO). The CGRaBS J0211+1051 was detected to have degree of polarization (DP) with steady position angle (PA) at
43 on 2011 January 30. During Jan 31 and Feb 1, while polarization
shows some variation, position angle remains steady for the night. Several
olarization flashes occurred during February 2 and 3 resulting in changes in
the DP by more than 4% at short time scales ( 17 to 45 mins). A mild
increase in the linear polarization with frequency is noticed during the nights
of February 2 & 3. The source exhibited significant inter-night variations in
the degree of polarization (changed by about 2 to 9%) and position angle
(changed by 2 to 22) during the five nights of observations. The
intra-night activity shown by the source appears to be related to turbulence in
the relativistic jet. Sudden change in the PA accompanied by a rise in the DP
could be indicative of the fresh injection of electrons in the jet. The
detection of high and variable degree of polarization categorizes the source as
low energy peaked blazar.Comment: 14-pages including 3-figure
Percutaneous ethanol injection for treatment of solid, cystic and autonomous thyroid nodules
Percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) guided by ultrasound has been used for the treatment of cystic, solid and autonomous thyroid nodules. We present our experience in the treatment of 50 patients with thyroid nodules: 26 solid, 17 cystic and 7 autonomous (AN). Patients were evaluated 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months and 1 year after PEI. After one year, solid nodules showed a mean 74% volume reduction, and cysts a volume reduction of 92%, with no recurrences. After one year, 5 patients with AN reached clinical and laboratory euthyroidism; the other 2 also became euthyroid, but with subnormal TSH. Recurrence of thyrotoxicosis was not observed and mean nodular reduction was 66%. The procedure was well tolerated by all patients. The results confirm that PEI is a good therapeutic alternative for reduction of solid and cystic thyroid nodules and for the treatment of autonomous nodules.A injeção percutânea de etanol (IPE) guiada por ultra-som tem sido utilizada para o tratamento de nódulos tiroidianos autônomos, sólidos e cÃsticos. Apresentamos nossa experiência em 50 pacientes tratados, sendo 26 portadores de nódulos sólidos, 17 de nódulos cÃsticos e 7 de nódulos autônomos (NA). Avaliamos os pacientes 1 semana, 1 mês, 3 meses, 6 meses e 1 ano após a IPE. Após 1 ano, os nódulos sólidos reduziram a 74% do volume inicial, os cÃsticos diminuÃram 92% sem apresentar recidivas. Um ano após o tratamento dos nódulos autônomos, 5 pacientes estavam em eutiroidismo clÃnico e laboratorial e 2 em eutiroidismo mas com TSH subnormal. Não houve recorrência da tirotoxicose e a redução nodular foi de 66%. O procedimento foi bem tolerado por todos. Early phase observations of extremely luminous Type Ia Supernova 2009dc
We present early phase observations in optical and near-infrared wavelengths
for the extremely luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2009dc. The decline rate
of the light curve is , which is one of the
slowest among SNe Ia. The peak -band absolute magnitude is mag even if the host extinction is mag. It reaches
mag for the host extinction of mag as
inferred from the observed Na {\sc i} D line absorption in the host. Our
-band photometry shows that the SN is one of the most luminous SNe Ia
also in near-infrared wavelengths. These results indicate that SN 2009dc
belongs to the most luminous class of SNe Ia, like SN 2003fg and SN 2006gz. We
estimate the ejected Ni mass of \Msun for no host
extinction case (or 1.6 0.4 M for the host extinction of
mag). The C {\sc ii} 6580 absorption line keeps visible
until a week after maximum, which diminished in SN 2006gz before its maximum
brightness. The line velocity of Si {\sc ii} 6355 is about 8000 km
s around the maximum, being considerably slower than that of SN 2006gz,
while comparable to that of SN 2003fg. The velocity of the C {\sc ii} line is
almost comparable to that of the Si {\sc ii}. The presence of the carbon line
suggests that thick unburned C+O layers remain after the explosion. SN 2009dc
is a plausible candidate of the super-Chandrasekhar mass SNe Ia
The characterization of the distant blazar GB6 J1239+0443 from flaring and low activity periods
In 2008 AGILE and Fermi detected gamma-ray flaring activity from the
unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1236+0457, recently associated with a flat
spectrum radio quasar GB6 J1239+0443 at z=1.762. The optical counterpart of the
gamma-ray source underwent a flux enhancement of a factor 15-30 in 6 years, and
of ~10 in six months. We interpret this flare-up in terms of a transition from
an accretion-disk dominated emission to a synchrotron-jet dominated one. We
analysed a Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archival optical spectrum taken
during a period of low radio and optical activity of the source. We estimated
the mass of the central black hole using the width of the CIV emission line. In
our work, we have also investigated SDSS archival optical photometric data and
UV GALEX observations to estimate the thermal-disk emission contribution of GB6
J1239+0443. Our analysis of the gamma-ray data taken during the flaring
episodes indicates a flat gamma-ray spectrum, with an extension of up to 15
GeV, with no statistically-relevant sign of absorption from the broad line
region, suggesting that the blazar-zone is located beyond the broad line
region. This result is confirmed by the modeling of the broad-band spectral
energy distribution (well constrained by the available multiwavelength data) of
the flaring activity periods and by the accretion disk luminosity and black
