    Corporate social responsibility: country-level predispositions and the consequences of choosing a level of disclosure

    We study the different levels of corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosures of the largest European firms. We find that firms are more predisposed to disclose more CSR information in countries with: better investor protection, higher levels of democracy, more effective government services, higher quality regulations, more press freedom, and a lower commitment to environmental policies. Our analysis of the association of different levels of CSR disclosure with share prices indicates that a high level of CSR disclosure is associated with higher share prices, whereas a low level of CSR disclosure in sensitive industries is associated with lower share prices (compared to no disclosure). These results are also present when we analyse changes in CSR disclosure, and are robust to the inclusion of an accounting quality measure in our model. The overall effect of the association of higher levels of CSR disclosure with higher share prices is stronger in countries with more democracy, more government effectiveness, better regulatory quality, and more press freedom.     Tungsten fibre-reinforced composites for advanced plasma facing components

    AbstractThe European Fusion Roadmap foresees water cooled plasma facing components in a first DEMO design in order to provide enough margin for the cooling capacity and to only moderately extrapolate the technology which was developed and tested for ITER. In order to make best use of the water cooling concept copper (Cu) and copper-chromium-zirconium alloy (CuCrZr) are envisaged as heat sink whereas as armour tungsten (W) based materials will be used. Combining both materials in a high heat flux component asks for an increase of their operational range towards higher temperature in case of Cu/CuCrZr and lower temperatures for W. A remedy for both issues- brittleness of W and degrading strength of CuCrZr- could be the use of W fibres (Wf) in W and Cu based composites. Fibre preforms could be manufactured with industrially viable textile techniques. Flat textiles with a combination of 150/70 ”m W wires have been chosen for layered deposition of tungsten-fibre reinforced tungsten (Wf/W) samples and tubular multi-layered braidings with W wire thickness of 50 ”m were produced as a preform for tungsten-fibre reinforced copper (Wf /Cu) tubes. Cu melt infiltration was performed together with an industrial partner resulting in sample tubes without any blowholes. Property estimation by mean field homogenisation predicts strongly enhanced strength of the Wf/CuCrZr composite compared to its pure CuCrZr counterpart. Wf /W composites show very high toughness and damage tolerance even at room temperature. Cyclic load tests reveal that the extrinsic toughening mechanisms counteracting the crack growth are active and stable. FEM simulations of the Wf/W composite suggest that the influence of fibre debonding, which is an integral part of the toughening mechanisms, and reduced thermal conductivity of the fibre due to the necessary interlayers do not strongly influence the thermal properties of future components

    Formen und Dynamiken politscher Gewalt in den Philippinen

    Obwohl die Philippinen gemeinhin als die Ă€lteste Demokratie SĂŒdostasiens gelten, dominieren in der Politik immer noch mĂ€chtige Familien, die gegen Kritiker ihrer Macht notfalls zum Mittel der Gewalt greifen. In den letzten Jahren sind mehrere hundert extralegale Tötungen dokumentiert. Starke politische FĂŒhrer tolerieren auch die mehrhundert­fachen Morde von Kriminellen durch selbsternannte WĂ€chter der herrschenden Ordnung. Als dritte Form wird politische Gewalt in der Konkurrenz zwischen verschiedenen Elitefamilien insbesondere auf der lokalen Ebene im lĂ€ndlichen Raum analysiert. Alle drei Formen der Gewalt sind politisch, als sie der sozialen Kontrolle devianter Gruppen dienen, den Zugang zu Herrschaftspositionen beschrĂ€nken und die faktischen HerrschaftsverhĂ€ltnisse gegenĂŒber der Bevölkerung symbolisieren. Allen Gewaltformen gemein ist, dass der Staat sie weder verhindern kann, noch im Regelfall die TĂ€ter ermittelt und bestraft. Der Blick auf die Details der GewaltphĂ€nomene macht sichtbar, dass die offensichtliche SchwĂ€che des Staates eine notwendige Bedingung der Aufrechterhaltung der klientelistischen Herrschaft durch „politische Familien“ und „Strongmen“ bildet. Die SchwĂ€che des Staates ist in diesem Sinn funktional im Sinn der Aufrechterhaltung der Herrschaft der Wenigen ĂŒber die Vielen. Der politischen Gewalt in den Philippinen durch Demokratisierung, etwa in Form von stĂ€rkerer Dezentralisierung entgegenzuwirken, erscheint nicht erfolgversprechend. Die ReformvorschlĂ€ge im Report sind auf gezielte VerĂ€nderungen des institutionellen Rahmens politischen Handelns gerichtet. Es werden Reformen im Bereich des Polizei- und des Wahlrechts sowie die Abschaffung spezifischer staatlicher Finanzmittel empfohlen, die zentral fĂŒr die Stabilisierung von Patronagesystemen im lĂ€ndlichen Raum sind

    Increased Oxidative Burden Associated with Traffic Component of Ambient Particulate Matter at Roadside and Urban Background Schools Sites in London

    As the incidence of respiratory and allergic symptoms has been reported to be increased in children attending schools in close proximity to busy roads, it was hypothesised that PM from roadside schools would display enhanced oxidative potential (OP). Two consecutive one-week air quality monitoring campaigns were conducted at seven school sampling sites, reflecting roadside and urban background in London. Chemical characteristics of size fractionated particulate matter (PM) samples were related to the capacity to drive biological oxidation reactions in a synthetic respiratory tract lining fluid. Contrary to hypothesised contrasts in particulate OP between school site types, no robust size-fractionated differences in OP were identified due high temporal variability in concentrations of PM components over the one-week sampling campaigns. For OP assessed both by ascorbate (OPAA m−3) and glutathione (OPGSH m−3) depletion, the highest OP per cubic metre of air was in the largest size fraction, PM1.9–10.2. However, when expressed per unit mass of particles OPAA ”g−1 showed no significant dependence upon particle size, while OPGSH ”g−1 had a tendency to increase with increasing particle size, paralleling increased concentrations of Fe, Ba and Cu. The two OP metrics were not significantly correlated with one another, suggesting that the glutathione and ascorbate depletion assays respond to different components of the particles. Ascorbate depletion per unit mass did not show the same dependence as for GSH and it is possible that other trace metals (Zn, Ni, V) or organic components which are enriched in the finer particle fractions, or the greater surface area of smaller particles, counter-balance the redox activity of Fe, Ba and Cu in the coarse particles. Further work with longer-term sampling and a larger suite of analytes is advised in order to better elucidate the determinants of oxidative potential, and to fuller explore the contrasts between site types.\ud \u

    The Memory Centres of several Swiss hospitals have set up a national online registry for Alzheimer's research, called www.BHR-suisse.org. This type of registry already exists in the United States (www.brainhealthregistry.org/) and the Netherlands (https://hersenonderzoek.nl/). It contributes, as do these initiating sites, to the creation of a global database of research partners <sup>b</sup> who wish to contribute by participating in studies on neurodegenerative diseases and more particularly on Alzheimer's disease. By registering, they provide a certain amount of information and become potential research partners. Researchers can then select a panel of volunteers according to the selection and exclusion criteria of their studies, contact them and include them in their studies

    Local and regional components of aerosol in a heavily trafficked street canyon in central London derived from PMF and cluster analysis of single-particle ATOFMS spectra.

    Positive matrix factorization (PMF) has been applied to single particle ATOFMS spectra collected on a six lane heavily trafficked road in central London (Marylebone Road), which well represents an urban street canyon. PMF analysis successfully extracted 11 factors from mass spectra of about 700,000 particles as a complement to information on particle types (from K-means cluster analysis). The factors were associated with specific sources and represent the contribution of different traffic related components (i.e., lubricating oils, fresh elemental carbon, organonitrogen and aromatic compounds), secondary aerosol locally produced (i.e., nitrate, oxidized organic aerosol and oxidized organonitrogen compounds), urban background together with regional transport (aged elemental carbon and ammonium) and fresh sea spray. An important result from this study is the evidence that rapid chemical processes occur in the street canyon with production of secondary particles from road traffic emissions. These locally generated particles, together with aging processes, dramatically affected aerosol composition producing internally mixed particles. These processes may become important with stagnant air conditions and in countries where gasoline vehicles are predominant and need to be considered when quantifying the impact of traffic emissions.This is the author accepted manuscript.     DNA origami-based single-molecule forcespectroscopy elucidates RNA Polymerase IIIpre-initiation complex stability

    The TATA-binding protein (TBP) and a transcription factor (TF) IIB-like factor are important constituents of all eukaryotic initiation complexes. The reason for the emergence and strict requirement of the additional initiation factor Bdp1 in the RNA polymerase (RNAP) III system, however, remained elusive. A poorly studied aspect in this context is the effect of DNA strain arising from DNA compaction and transcriptional activity on initiation complex formation. We made use of a DNA origami-based force clamp to follow the assembly of human initiation complexes in the RNAP II and RNAP III systems at the single-molecule level under piconewton forces. We demonstrate that TBP-DNA complexes are force-sensitive and TFIIB is sufficient to stabilise TBP on a strained promoter. In contrast, Bdp1 is the pivotal component that ensures stable anchoring of initiation factors, and thus the polymerase itself, in the RNAP III system. Thereby, we offer an explanation for the crucial role of Bdp1 for the high transcriptional output of RNAP III

    ACTRIS ACSM intercomparison – Part 1: Reproducibility of concentration and fragment results from 13 individual Quadrupole Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitors (Q-ACSM) and consistency with co-located instruments

    As part of the European ACTRIS project, the first large Quadrupole Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (Q-ACSM) intercomparison study was conducted in the region of Paris for 3 weeks during the late-fall – early-winter period (November–December 2013). The first week was dedicated to the tuning and calibration of each instrument, whereas the second and third were dedicated to side-by-side comparison in ambient conditions with co-located instruments providing independent information on submicron aerosol optical, physical, and chemical properties. Near real-time measurements of the major chemical species (organic matter, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and chloride) in the non-refractory submicron aerosols (NR-PM1) were obtained here from 13 Q-ACSM. The results show that these instruments can produce highly comparable and robust measurements of the NR-PM1 total mass and its major components. Taking the median of the 13 Q-ACSM as a reference for this study, strong correlations (r2 > 0.9) were observed systematically for each individual Q-ACSM across all chemical families except for chloride for which three Q-ACSMs showing weak correlations partly due to the very low concentrations during the study. Reproducibility expanded uncertainties of Q-ACSM concentration measurements were determined using appropriate methodologies defined by the International Standard Organization (ISO 17025, 1999) and were found to be 9, 15, 19, 28, and 36 % for NR-PM1, nitrate, organic matter, sulfate, and ammonium, respectively. However, discrepancies were observed in the relative concentrations of the constituent mass fragments for each chemical component. In particular, significant differences were observed for the organic fragment at mass-to-charge ratio 44, which is a key parameter describing the oxidation state of organic aerosol. Following this first major intercomparison exercise of a large number of Q-ACSMs, detailed intercomparison results are presented, along with a discussion of some recommendations about best calibration practices, standardized data processing, and data treatment.JRC.H.2-Air and Climat

    Controlled reduction of photobleaching in DNA origami gold nanoparticle hybrids

    The amount of information obtainable from a fluorescence-based measurement is limited by photobleaching: Irreversible photochemical reactions either render the molecules nonfluorescent or shift their absorption and/or emission spectra outside the working range. Photobleaching is evidenced as a decrease of fluorescence intensity with time, or in the case of single molecule measurements, as an abrupt, single-step interruption of the fluorescence emission that determines the end of the experiment. Reducing photobleaching is central for improving fluorescence (functional) imaging, single molecule tracking, and fluorescence-based biosensors and assays. In this single molecule study, we use DNA self-assembly to produce hybrid nanostructures containing individual fluorophores and gold nanoparticles at a controlled separation distance of 8.5 nm. By changing the nanoparticles? size we are able to systematically increase the mean number of photons emitted by the fluorophores before photobleaching.Fil: Pellegrotti, Jesica Vanesa.
