A new special class of Petrov type D vacuum space-times in dimension five

Using extensions of the Newman-Penrose and Geroch-Held-Penrose formalisms to five dimensions, we invariantly classify all Petrov type DD vacuum solutions for which the Riemann tensor is isotropic in a plane orthogonal to a pair of Weyl alligned null directionsComment: 4 pages, 1 table, no figures. Defining a Benchmark Suite for Evaluating the Import of OWL Lite Ontologies

SemanticWeb tools should be able to correctly interchange ontologies and, therefore, to interoperate. This interchange is not always a straightforward task if tools have different underlying knowledge representation paradigms. This paper describes the process followed to define a benchmark suite for evaluating the OWL import capabilities of ontology development tools in a benchmarking activity in progress in the Knowledge Web European Network of Excellence

Petrov D vacuum spaces revisited: Complete tables and invariant classification by GHP analysis

    Get PDF
The efficiency of the GHP formalism combined with the power of the computer system xAcT enables an exhaustive systematic analysis to be made of Petrov D vacuum spaces. This gives a complete involutive set of tables for the four GHP derivatives on each of the four GHP spin coefficients and the one Weyl tensor component. It follows directly from these results that the theoretical upper bound on the order of covariant differentiation of the Riemann tensor required for a Karlhede invariant classification of these spaces is reduced to two.(undefined

Chronic Elevation of Liver Enzymes in Acute Intermittent Porphyria Initially Misdiagnosed as Autoimmune Hepatitis

    Get PDF
Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease characterized by an elevation of liver enzymes, as well as specific autoantibodies. It is more common in women than men. We describe a 32-year-old woman with elevated transaminases, autoantibodies, and a liver biopsy result suggestive of autoimmune hepatitis. The indicated treatment was administered without showing a satisfactory response. The patient had a family history of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) so we decided to begin treatment with hematin, achieving a complete remission of the symptoms. Acute intermittent porphyria is a rare condition characterized by neurovisceral symptoms, abdominal pain being the most common of them. The disease has a higher prevalence among young women and certain European countries such as Sweden, Great Britain, and Spain. A correct diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential because patients affected by AIP must have a strict followup due to the fatal outcome of the outbreaks

Anticancer applications of nanostructured silica-based materials functionalized with titanocene derivatives: Induction of cell death mechanism through TNFR1 modulation

This article belongs to the Special Issue Nanomaterials for Biomedical ApplicationsA series of cytotoxic titanocene derivatives have been immobilized onto nanostructured silica-based materials using two different synthetic routes, namely, (i) a simple grafting protocol via protonolysis of the Ti-Cl bond; and (ii) a tethering method by elimination of ethanol using triethoxysilyl moieties of thiolato ligands attached to titanium. The resulting nanostructured systems have been characterized by different techniques such as XRD, XRF, DR-UV, BET, SEM, and TEM, observing the incorporation of the titanocene derivatives onto the nanostructured silica and slight changes in the textural features of the materials after functionalization with the metallodrugs. A complete biological study has been carried out using the synthesized materials exhibiting moderate cytotoxicity in vitro against three human hepatic carcinoma (HepG2, SK-Hep-1, Hep3B) and three human colon carcinomas (DLD-1, HT-29, COLO320) and very low cytotoxicity against normal cell lines. In addition, the cells' metabolic activity was modified by a 24-h exposure in a dose-dependent manner. Despite not having a significant effect on TNFalfa or the proinflammatory interleukin 1alfa secretion, the materials strongly modulated tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling, even at sub-cytotoxic concentrations. This is achieved mainly by upregulation of the TNFR1 receptor production, something which has not previously been observed for these systems.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of an energetic supplementation during four days previous to the artificial insemination (IA) in post-partum (11 dpp) on the body condition and the live body weight of primiparous rabbit does. Then, a total of 6 animals were fed with an energetic flushing consisting in the administration of propilenglycol in a 2% mixing in the drinking water. Drinking water of a control group of 7 animals were not treated. Feed was supplied ad libitum in both groups. Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) was used to analyze the body condition because it can be considered a non invasive method and it is easy to apply. Statistically analyzed results shown no significant differences between the weight of the flushing’s group and the control’s rabbit does group at the beginning of the treatment (4200. 8 ± 80.0 g. vs. 4112.0 ± 173.3 g., respectively) nor at the end (4137.8 ± 119.0 g. vs. 4141.7 ± 146.3 g., respectively). Related to the body condition, the flushing’s group presented a better condition than the control’s group at the beginning of the treatment, but it was similar at the end. This study suggests that rabbits does with similar weight can show different body condition; also, the administration of an energetic flushing during four days previous to AI in primiparous lactating does seem to have no influence in live body weight nor in body condition
