Braiding statistics approach to symmetry-protected topological phases
We construct a 2D quantum spin model that realizes an Ising paramagnet with
gapless edge modes protected by Ising symmetry. This model provides an example
of a "symmetry-protected topological phase." We describe a simple physical
construction that distinguishes this system from a conventional paramagnet: we
couple the system to a Z_2 gauge field and then show that the \pi-flux
excitations have different braiding statistics from that of a usual paramagnet.
In addition, we show that these braiding statistics directly imply the
existence of protected edge modes. Finally, we analyze a particular microscopic
model for the edge and derive a field theoretic description of the low energy
excitations. We believe that the braiding statistics approach outlined in this
paper can be generalized to a large class of symmetry-protected topological

Quantum motion in superposition of Aharonov-Bohm with some additional electromagnetic fields
The structure of additional electromagnetic fields to the Aharonov-Bohm
field, for which the Schr\"odinger, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations can be
solved exactly are described and the corresponding exact solutions are found.
It is demonstrated that aside from the known cases (a constant and uniform
magnetic field that is parallel to the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid, a static
spherically symmetrical electric field, and the field of a magnetic monopole),
there are broad classes of additional fields. Among these new additional fields
we have physically interesting electric fields acting during a finite time, or
localized in a restricted region of space. There are additional time-dependent
uniform and isotropic electric fields that allow exact solutions of the
Schrodinger equation. In the relativistic case there are additional electric
fields propagating along the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid with arbitrary electric
pulse shape
Does co-authorship lead to higher academic productivity?
In recent decades, co-authorship and policies aimed at inducing academic collaboration have increased simultaneously. Assuming that intellectual collaboration is exogenously determined, prior studies found a negative relationship between co-authorship and productivity. I examine a panel data on economists publishing from 1970 to 2011 to test the causal effect of intellectual collaboration on intellectual output. As characteristics of the individual and her opportunity set are endogenously related to both collaboration and productivity, I instrument the amount of co-authorship by the common research interest between an author and her potential co-authors. After controlling for endogenous co-authorship formation, unobservable heterogeneity and time varying factors, the effect of intellectual collaboration on individual performance becomes positive
Hybrid vehicle assessment. Phase 1: Petroleum savings analysis
The results of a comprehensive analysis of near term electric hybrid vehicles are presented, with emphasis on their potential to save significant amounts of petroleum on a national scale in the 1990s. Performance requirements and expected annual usage patterns of these vehicles are first modeled. The projected U.S. fleet composition is estimated, and conceptual hybrid vehicle designs are conceived and analyzed for petroleum use when driven in the expected annual patterns. These petroleum consumption estimates are then compared to similar estimates for projected 1990 conventional vehicles having the same performance and driven in the same patterns. Results are presented in the form of three utility functions and comparisons of sevral conceptual designs are made. The Hybrid Vehicle (HV) design and assessment techniques are discussed and a general method is explained for selecting the optimum energy management strategy for any vehicle mission battery combination. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, and development recommendations are identified
A Neutral Polyampholyte in an ionic solution
The behavior of a neutral polyampholyte () chain with monomers, in an
ionic solution, is analyzed in the framework of the full Debye-Hckel-Bjerrum-Flory theory. A chain, that in addition to the
neutral monomers, also contains an equal number of positively and negatively
charged monomers, is dissolved in an ionic solution. For \underline{high}
concentrations of salt and at high temperatures, the exists in an extended
state. As the temperature is decreased, the electrostatic energy becomes more
relevant and at a the system collapses into a dilute globular
state, or microelectrolyte. This state contains a concentration of salt higher
than the surrounding medium. As the temperature is decreased even further,
association between the monomers of the polymer and the ions of the salt
becomes relevant and there is a crossover from this globular state to a low
temperature extended state. For \underline{low} densities of salt, the system
is collapsed for almost all temperatures and exhibits a first-order phase

Homoclinic Orbits around Spinning Black Holes I: Exact Solution for the Kerr Separatrix
Under the dissipative effects of gravitational radiation, black hole binaries
will transition from an inspiral to a plunge. The separatrix between bound and
plunging orbits features prominently in the transition. For equatorial Kerr
orbits, we show that the separatrix is a homoclinic orbit in one-to-one
correspondence with an energetically-bound, unstable circular orbit. After
providing a definition of homoclinic orbits, we exploit their correspondence
with circular orbits and derive exact solutions for them. This paper focuses on
homoclinic behavior in physical space, while in a companion paper we paint the
complementary phase space portrait. The exact results for the Kerr separatrix
could be useful for analytic or numerical studies of the transition from
