Predicting Patient Patterns in Veterans Administration Emergency Departments

    Get PDF
Veteran’s Affairs (VA) hospitals represent a unique patient population within the healthcare system; for example, they have few female and pediatric patients, typically do not see many trauma cases and often do not accept ambulance runs. As such, veteran-specific studies are required to understand the particular needs and stumbling blocks of VA emergency department (ED) care. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the demographics of patients served at VA EDs and compare them to the national ED population at large. Our analysis reveals that the VA population exhibits a similar set of common chief complaints to the national ED population (and in similar proportions) and yet differs from the general population in many ways. For example, the VA treats an older, predominantly male population, and encounters a much lower incidence of trauma. Perhaps most significantly, the incidence of psychiatric disease at the VA is more than double that of the general population (10% vs. 4%) and accounts for a significant proportion of admissions (23%). Furthermore, the overall admission percentage at the VA hospital is nearly three times that of the ED population at large (36% versus 13%). This paper provides valuable insight into the make-up of a veteran’s population and can guide staffing and resource allocation accordingly

The Ecological and Ethical Consumption Development Prospects in Poland Compared with the Western European Countries

    Get PDF
An overview of the Western European literature shows that one of the most distinct trends in consumption that has been noted in the recent years is globally increasing environmental and social awareness. The issue of consumers' behaviours and attitudes towards "socially responsible products" has been gaining importance in Polish economy as well. This article evaluates the development prospects of ethical and ecological consumption in Poland vis-à-vis Western European countries. The comparative analysis being part of the article utilizes primary sources of information, i.e. interviews with a representative sample of Polish adults, as well as secondary sources of information. A factor analysis or, more precisely, a principal component analysis, allowed dividing Polish consumers into groups that were typologically homogeneous in respect of their sensitivity to various aspects of business ethics and ecology.

Earthquake trend prediction using long short-term memory RNN

    Get PDF
The prediction of a natural calamity such as earthquakes has been an area of interest for a long time but accurate results in earthquake forecasting have evaded scientists, even leading some to deem it intrinsically impossible to forecast them accurately. In this paper an attempt to forecast earthquakes and trends using a data of a series of past earthquakes. A type of recurrent neural network called Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is used to model the sequence of earthquakes. The trained model is then used to predict the future trend of earthquakes. An ordinary Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) solution for the same problem was done for comparison. The LSTM neural network was found to outperform the FFNN. The R^2 score of the LSTM is better than the FFNN’s by 59%

Objectives: To create a radiological profile of fungal sinusitis and determine the radiological differences between fungal and nonfungal sinusitis based on the presence of hyperattenuation, bony erosion, neo-osteogenesis, air-fluid level, and extrasinus extension. Methods: This is a retrospective, single-blind, case-control study involving the analysis of 119 computed tomography (CT) scans of the paranasal sinuses. Based on the histopathology, they were divided into cases comprising fungal sinusitis and controls of nonfungal sinusitis. Benign and malignant tumors and previously operated cases of fungal sinusitis were excluded from the study. The principal investigators were blinded to the diagnosis. The comparison parameters were hyperattenuation, the presence of air-fluid level, bone erosion, neo-osteogenesis, and extrasinus extension. Data was analyzed by Chi-square and Fischer exact t-test using SPSS 14.0 software and a p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Our study showed the presence of hyperattenuation, neo-osteogenesis, bone erosion, air-fluid level, extrasinus extension in 75.2%, 48.3%, 25.9%, 36.2%, and 6.9% of the cases and 13.1%, 16.4%, 6.6%, 9.8%, and 0 controls, respectively. All the parameters were statistically significant in cases when compared to controls. Conclusion: Hyperattenuation, neo-osteogenesis, air-fluid level, bone erosion, and extrasinus extension are the parameters on CT imaging that will help routinely assess and differentiate fungal sinusitis from nonfungal sinusitis with considerable accuracy, although, there is an overlap with malignancy when the parameter of bone erosion is considered as a differential diagnosis of chronic invasive fungal sinusitis. It reiterates the fact that history, clinical examination, and laboratory evaluation hold an important role in provisional diagnosis

Coffee pulp, a by-product of coffee production, modulates gut microbiota and improves metabolic syndrome in high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats

    Get PDF
Waste from food production can be re‐purposed as raw material for usable products to decrease industrial waste. Coffee pulp is 29% of the dry weight of coffee cherries and contains caf‐feine, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, diterpenes and fibre. We investigated the attenuation of signs of metabolic syndrome induced by high‐carbohydrate, high‐fat diet in rats by dietary supplementation with 5% freeze‐dried coffee pulp for the final 8 weeks of a 16‐week protocol. Coffee pulp decreased body weight, feed efficiency and abdominal fat; normalised systolic blood pressure, left ventricular diastolic stiffness, and plasma concentrations of triglycerides and non‐esterified fatty acids; and improved glucose tolerance in rats fed high‐carbohydrate, high‐fat diet. Further, the gut microbiota was modulated with high‐carbohydrate, high‐fat diet and coffee pulp supplementation and 14 physiological parameters were correlated with the changes in bacterial community structures. This study suggested that coffee pulp, as a waste from the coffee industry, is useful as a functional food for improving obesity‐associated metabolic, cardiovascular and liver structure and function, and gut microbiota

Invasive Actinomycosis of Maxilla - An Unusual Case Report

    Get PDF
Cervicofacial actinomycosis is an unusual infection caused by Actinomyces species. It rarely involves the maxilla. We present a case of an elderly female with a left sided maxillary swelling which was diagnosed as left maxillary actinomycosis invading the adjacent structures suspected to be secondary to a bone neoplasm on the basis of histopathology. The organism grew in culture in our laboratory and hence this case is a deviation from the common feature that cultures are most of the times of little help in detecting this organism. The classical growth of this organism on culture in addition to the histopathology report highly empowered the diagnosis of this case. Also, our findings that it can permeate the surrounding structures and can produce a conundrum for the diagnosis are noteworthy

804-811Cryogenic cooling with liquid nitrogen has a wide field of scientific and engineering applications. The aim of the presented research work is to analyze the impact on cutting force and temperature during the LN2 single supply at (i) rake face and double supply (ii) rake and flank face of TiN coated carbide cutting tool during turning of AISI D3 steel. Taguchi based S/N ratio was used for Design of Experiments (DoE) of L18 orthogonal array. The four control factors were selected. The three factors like speed, feed and depth of cut were varied to three levels. The fourth factor was the machining condition which was varied to two levels. The cutting force and temperature were declined by 32-48% and 34-46% during the double supply of LN2 at rake and flank face as compared to single supply at rake face. The influence and percentage of contribution of each factor were found out by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The double supply method with LN2 supply at rake and flank face had the highest effect of contribution in the percentage as 77.13% and 87.42% for cutting force and temperature respectively. The values obtained during confirmatory runs were very close to the optimized results within the limits
