    Physical and morphological characterization of reactively magnetron sputtered TiN films

    The present paper reports the influence of growth conditions on the properties of TiN thin films deposited by rf reactive magnetron sputtering in the low-pressure range. The effects of rf power at the Ti target and the negative bias voltage at the substrate in the morphology, structure, electrical resistivity and colour of the samples were studied in detail. X-Ray diffraction results showed that the delta-TiN phase (a(0) similar to 0.430 nm) is detected in all the samples. The sample prepared with grounded substrate revealed a lattice parameter close to the bulk value (0.424 nm), which is a consequence of a low stress state, due to the absence of ion bombardment. The sample deposited at 1000 W has a lattice parameter of 0.426 nm, close to that of the stress-free material (a(0) =0.424 nm), probably due to some stress relief. All films have a columnar-type structure, lying in the T and I zone of the Thornton Model. The resistivity of the TiN films is almost constant and close to 60 muOmega cm independently of the preparation conditions, except for the films deposited at 1000 W, p similar to 215 muOmega cm, and for the grounded sample, p similar to 153 muOmega cm. These values are probably due to cracks associated with stress relieves, in the first case, and the lack of ion bombardment that leads to films with lower density and higher number of defects in the second.     On the Nature of the Core of α Centauri A: The Impact of the Metallicity Mixture

    Forward asteroseismic modeling plays an important role toward a complete understanding of the physics taking place in deep stellar interiors. With a dynamical mass in the range over which models develop convective cores while in the main sequence, the solar-like oscillator α Centauri A presents itself as an interesting case study. We address the impact of varying the metallicity mixture on the determination of the energy transport process at work in the core of α Centauri A. We find that ≳ 70% of models reproducing the revised dynamical mass of α Centauri A have convective cores, regardless of the metallicity mixture adopted. This is consistent with the findings of Nsamba et al., where nuclear reaction rates were varied instead. Given these results, we propose that α Centauri A be adopted in the calibration of stellar model parameters when modeling solar-like stars with convective cores

    Safety requirements for the design of collaborative robotic workstations in europe – a review

    Industrial manufacturing is moving towards flexible and intelligent processes. Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) has a pivotal role in smart factories due to a more versatile resource allocation that ultimately drives higher productivity and efficiency. The physical barriers that separate robots’ and humans’ workspaces are removed to facilitate HRC, which raises new safety concerns. To cope with this new robotics paradigm, regulatory legislation and international safety standards have been issued and are enforced for any machinery placed in factories. In this paper, we aim to shorten the gap between research projects and industry-ready robotic systems, by providing the guidelines and general requirements for collaborative robotic applications.     Dissecção da Axila no Tratamento do Câncer de Mama

    A dissecção da axila no tratamento do câncer da mama tem sido questionada quanto aos seus objetivos. No passado próximo a intenção era curativa: presentemente tem sido indicada principalmente para oferecer informação de extensão da doença (comprometimento de linfonodos por tumor) e tratamentos complementares, principalmente a quimioterapia adjuvante. Apenas alguns subgrupos de mulheres têm-se beneficiado realmente da quimioterapia adjuvante: as pré-meno-pausadas com linfonodos axilares comprometidos com tumor. Uma vez decidida a dissecção axilar, ainda resta a questão de saber se deve ser radical, ou limitada a níveis I e II (até músculo peitoral menor). Muitos centros importantes de câncer indicam a dissecção limitada da axila, que em média retira cerca de 10 linfonodos, alegando que desta forma não há risco de edema importante do braço e conseguem boa informação prognóstica e bom controle tumoral da axila. Aqueles que indicam a dissecção radical alegam que esta é a única forma de se obter informação real da situação axilar. Algumas pacientes podem ter linfonodos livres de tumor na parte baixa da axila, mas com tumor no ápice axilar ("skip metastasis") e a única forma de descobri-lo seria através da dissecção radical. Como a dissecção radical da axila pode causar edema do braço, é importante questionara real indicação da mesma. Pacientes em pós-menopausa e com axila clinicamente negativa talvez pudessem ter a alternativa de não dissecara axila de forma radical (e com isso não correr o risco de edema do braço), sem aumentara chance de falha de tratamento. O presente artigo discute o problema da dissecção da axila no tratamento do câncer da mama e mostra dados de 148 pacientes que fizeram tratamento conservador no Centro de Oncologia Campinas, metade das quais sem dissecção da axila

    Potential biological properties of lycopene in a self-emulsifying drug delivery system

    In recent years, lycopene has been highlighted due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, associated with a beneficial effect on human health. The aim of this study was to advance the studies of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms on human keratinocytes cells (HaCaT) of a self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS) loaded with lycopene purified from red guava (nanoLPG). The characteristics of nanoLPG were a hydrodynamic diameter of 205 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.21 and a zeta potential of −20.57, providing physical stability for the nanosystem. NanoLPG demonstrated antioxidant capacity, as shown using the ORAC methodology, and prevented DNA degradation (DNA agarose). Proinflammatory activity was evaluated by quantifying the cytokines TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8, with only IL-8 showing a significant increase (p < 0.0001). NanoLPG showed greater inhibition of the tyrosinase and elastase enzymes, involved in the skin aging process, compared to purified lycopene (LPG). In vitro treatment for 24 h with 5.0 µg/mL of nanoLPG did not affect the viability of HaCaT cells. The ultrastructure of HaCaT cells demonstrated the maintenance of morphology. This contrasts with endoplasmic reticulum stresses and autophagic vacuoles when treated with LPG after stimulation or not with LPS. Therefore, the use of lycopene in a nanoemulsion may be beneficial in strategies and products associated with skin health.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Efficient Singlet Oxygen Production by Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes with Aromatic Alkynyl Ligands

    The synthesis of five novel cyclometalated platinum(II) compounds containing five different alkynyl-chromophores was achieved by the reaction of the previously synthesized Pt-Cl cyclometalated compound (1) with the corresponding RC (math)CH by a Sonogashira reaction. It was observed that the spectral and photophysical characteristics of the cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes (Pt-Ar) are essentially associated with the platinum-cyclometalated unit. Room-temperature emission of the Pt-Ar complexes was attributed to phosphorescence in agreement with DFT calculations. Broad nanosecond (ns)-transient absorption spectra were observed with decays approximately identical to those obtained from the emission of the triplet state. From the femtosecond-transient absorption (fs-TA) data, two main excited- state decay components were identified: one in the order of a few picoseconds was assigned to fast intersystem crossing to populate the triplet excited-state and the second (hundreds of ns) was associated with the decay of the transient triplet state. In general, efficient singlet oxygen photosensitization quantum yields were observed from the triplet state of these complexes

    Sleep deprivation affects inflammatory marker expression in adipose tissue

    <p>Abstract</p> <p/> <p>Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase inflammatory markers in rat sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Inflammation is a condition associated with pathologies such as obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. We investigated changes in the pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines in different depots of white adipose tissue in rats. We also assessed lipid profiles and serum levels of corticosterone, leptin, and adiponectin after 96 hours of sleep deprivation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study consisted of two groups: a control (C) group and a paradoxical sleep deprivation by 96 h (PSD) group. Ten rats were randomly assigned to either the control group (C) or the PSD. Mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissue, liver and serum were collected following completion of the PSD protocol. Levels of interleukin (IL)-6, interleukin (IL)-10 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were analysed in MEAT and RPAT, and leptin, adiponectin, glucose, corticosterone and lipid profile levels were analysed in serum.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>IL-6 levels were elevated in RPAT but remained unchanged in MEAT after PSD. IL-10 protein concentration was not altered in either depot, and TNF-α levels decreased in MEAT. Glucose, triglycerides (TG), VLDL and leptin decreased in serum after 96 hours of PSD; adiponectin was not altered and corticosterone was increased.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PSD decreased fat mass and may modulate the cytokine content in different depots of adipose tissue. The inflammatory response was diminished in both depots of adipose tissue, with increased IL-6 levels in RPAT and decreased TNF-α protein concentrations in MEAT and increased levels of corticosterone in serum.</p
