This paper aims to bring together hitherto neglected archaeological data about the early medieval landscapes of Galicia (north-west Spain), in order to understand the social transformations this ‘peripheral’ region underwent between the fifth and the ninth centuries and to frame them in the context of wider European debates. Despite its many limitations, the archaeology reveals that until the middle of the seventh century, the late antique society of Gallaecia experienced a previously unsuspected vitality. At this point a socio-political fragmentation occurred, which was characterized by the strengthening of local power, until a further change took place with the progressive incorporation of Galicia into the Asturian kingdom in the ninth century

[EN]The integrated use of Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis methods in territorial archaeology helps us to improve the knowledge of settlement structures along history and to observe relationships and tendencies -not accurate data– unnoticeable in a direct and visual way. Applying this methodology to the study of an early medieval territory in the northwest of Galicia, with a diachronic perspective and by means of the combination of diverse types of sources, we can observe a continuous evolution without breakages of the settlement structures from the Antiquity, especially from late roman patterns, until XIIIth century, in a process in wich villages and churches are the main elements in the territorial articulation.[ES]La combinación de Sistemas de Información Geográfica y técnicas de análisis espacial en arqueología territorial permiten profundizar en el conocimiento de las estructuras de poblamiento a lo largo de la historia y observar relaciones y tendencias -no datos absolutos- inaprehensibles de forma directa y visual.

Louise Bourgeois began her artistic career in New York in the 1940s as a colleague of the abstract expressionists, whose artwork was hailed by Clement Greenberg as a high point in modernist abstraction. Bourgeois’ peculiar position –poised between two seemingly opposed art movements, surrealism and abstract expressionism and feminism- has created a conundrum for critics. As art historians have increasingly begun to blur the boundaries separating modernism from feminism, however, Bourgeois’ art has acquired fresh urgency. In this paper we suggest that Bourgeois’ artistic oeuvre elaborated avant-garde tropes for the unconscious and for women in order to posit a complex female subjectivity and to challenge the simplistic identification of irrationality with femininity. We also provide a critical approach to her installation “Precious Liquids” (1992) in the midst of feminist art historical debates around the metaphorical potential of the body drawing from the painted traces of the abstract expressionists and from the artist’s own previous rubber and stone sculptures.

This paper raises the crucial question as to whether non-Western feminisms have reached a postcolonial historical moment in which new proposals and alternatives may open up a horizon of expectations to counter the development of colonial history and its patriarchal legacy. Engaged writers like Nancy Morejón (La Habana 1944–) and Jamaica Kincaid (St John’s Antigua, 1949–) set themselves up to make room for black women in history, a counternarrative to patriarchal History. An analysis of representative pieces of poetry and fiction by both writers in a dialogue with ideas such as the decolonial imaginary, border thinking and rewriting History shed light on alternatives for emancipatory feminist projects for the 21st century.

The abundances of polyacetylenes towards CRL618

We present a mid-infrared high spectral resolution spectrum of CRL618 in the frequency ranges 778-784 and 1227-1249 cm^-1 (8.01-8.15 and 12.75-12.85 um) taken with the Texas Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) and the Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). We have identified more than 170 ro-vibrational lines arising from C2H2, HCN, C4H2, and C6H2. We have found no unmistakable trace of C8H2. The line profiles display a complex structure suggesting the presence of polyacetylenes in several components of the circumstellar envelope (CSE). We derive total column densities of 2.5 10^17, 3.1 10^17, 2.1 10^17, 9.3 10^16 cm^-2, and < 5 10^16 cm^-2 for HCN, C2H2, C4H2, C6H2, and C8H2, respectively. The observations indicate that both the rotational and vibrational temperatures in the innermost CSE depend on the molecule, varying from 100 to 350 K for the rotational temperatures and 100 to 500 K for the vibrational temperatures. Our results support a chemistry in the innermost CSE based on radical-neutral reactions triggered by the intense UV radiation field.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

In both species, those plants grown in the presence of root nodule-forming symbiotic Bradyrhizobium showed less root and shoot growth reduction, plus greater translocation of Cu to the shoot, than those grown without symbiotic Bradyrhizobium. The effective added concentrations of Cu that reduced shoot and root dry weight by 50% (EC50), and the critical toxic concentration that caused a 10% reduction in plant growth (CTC10%), were higher in plants grown with symbiotic Bradyrhizobium, and were in general higher in the roots whether the plants were grown with or without these bacteria. The production of malondialdehyde and total thiols was stimulated by Cu excess in the shoots and roots of white lupin grown with or without symbiotic Bradyrhizobium, but mainly in those without the symbionts. In contrast, in soybean, the increases in malondialdehyde and total thiols associated with rising Cu concentration were a little higher (1.2-5.0 and 1.0-1.6 times respectively) in plants grown with symbiotic Bradyrhizobium than without. Finally, the organ most sensitive to Cu excess was generally the shoot, both in white lupin and soybean grown with or without symbiotic Bradyrhizobium. Further, Bradyrhizobium-legume symbiosis appears to increase the tolerance to Cu excess in both legumes, but mainly in white lupin; plant growth was less reduced and CTC10% and EC50 values increased compared to plants grown without symbiotic Bradyrhizobium. Bradyrhizobium N2 fixation in both legumes would therefore seem to increase the phytoremediation potential of these plants when growing on Cu-contaminated sitesFunding for this study was provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (project CTM2010-21922-C02-02/TECNO), the Spanish Ministry of the Economy and Competitiveness (AGL2012-39715-C03-03/MINECO), and the Comunidad de Madrid (project S2009/AMB-1478

A Supporting System for Adaptive Peer Review based on Learners' Profiles

Proceedings of: Computer-Supported Peer Review in Education: Synergies with Intelligent Tutoring Systems (CSPRED 2010), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA, June 14th, 2010.Intelligent tutoring systems cover a wide range of educational processes. There are however scarce attempts to apply those principles for adapting peer review processes according to the student's profile in the educational settings. In this paper, the Adaptive Peer Review methodology is reviewed, paying special attention to the problem of building the student profile. A supporting system based on such Adaptive Peer Review methodology is then introduced, which should facilitate teachers the adoption and deployment of adaptation to the student in peer assessment experiences in real educational settings. Experimental results supporting the ideas presented are briefly discussed. This work was partially funded by the Best Practice Network ICOPER (Grant No. ECP-2007-EDU-417007), the Learn3 project, “Plan Nacional de I+D+I” TIN2008-05163/TSI, and the eMadrid network, S2009/TIC-1650, “Investigación y Desarrollo de tecnologías para el e-learning en la Comunidad de Madrid”.Publicad
