Torn between Two Mothers: Indigenous Women as spiritual Mentors in two Novels by Mexican Women Writers
In many novels by contemporary Hispanic women writers, the estrangement between mother and daughter seems to be a constant underlying theme. There are several examples of texts in which distancing between mother and daughter renders the role of the mother ineffective, prompting the daughter to search for an alternative maternal figure.
Within Mexican narrative, I have come upon four novels with protagonists who experience this predicament, but in which all the countervailing figures are indigenous women who are servants in the middle class white households inhabited by the young female characters. For this article, I have chosen only two of the group of these four novels to illustrate the female bonding between characters of different race and age; they are Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate and Brianda Domecq’s The Astonishing Story of the Saint of Cabora.
I first focus on each of these two novels separately, to provide a glimpse of the development as well as the nature of the relationship between each protagonist and her indigenous mentor. I then focus on the fact that, in spite of the differences between each author’s approach, there are some common traits present in both novels.
The indigenous surrogate mothers in these novels transmit to a younger generation an ancient wisdom that stands in the face of conventional Western patriarchal values that are reflected in terms considered irreconcilable opposites such as Indigenous-white, male-female, young-old, life-death. Although their mentoring encompasses a number of roles corresponding to the expectations of a mother figure, I am particularly interested in the spiritual aspect of this relationship, which helps explain the deep impact the mentors have on their surrogate daughters
Mainstreaming vs. Individuating: Incorporating Inclusive Pedagogy into Spanish Language and Culture Courses
At a time when higher education is experiencing unprecedented nationwide growth in populations of students of color, it is crucial to talk about inclusive practices in general, as well as in one’s own specific discipline. As a member of the department of Hispanic Studies at CSB/SJU, in the Fall of 2016, I had the opportunity to participate in the Humanities cohort of the inclusive pedagogy events sponsored by a Mellon grant. Coincidentally, our department had just decided to introduce a new course for advanced Spanish speakers geared to heritage speakers, which I volunteered to teach as a pilot in Fall 2016 to determine the needs of this student group. In an effort to emphasize the connection between inclusive pedagogy theory and classroom practice, I will share what I have learned through some of the Mellon grant activities and its application from my experience teaching this new course, as well as more established courses. For instance, I have learned that inclusion does not consist merely of avoiding overtly racist comments that can be considered “micro-aggressions,” but comprises encouraging students to value their experience as a minority group inside and outside of the classroom. This translates into facilitating students’ participation in their own learning by reflecting on their personal and social racial-ethnic identity through class projects such as presentations and essay writing. In addition, we in Hispanic Studies need to find a balance between mainstreaming our heritage students into learning Spanish language and culture with our white majority language learners and creating courses to meet their own individual needs to improve their academic skills
society in a standardized way, in order to their ideas achieve success. As this is a
computerized age, Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) has available a lot of
standardized methodologies in order to represent the information and transfer it to
computerized systems in order to be automated, either they are informal models
addressed to a first capture and organization of those knowledge, like for example
MOKA modelling language, or formal models, like the IDEF language family, the UML
language, or the XML one. A huge number of designers specialized or not in
knowledge engineering use the FBS (Function – Behaviour – Strucutre) framework for
developing their work within functional design field. The present work presents an
IDEF4-based informal model for representing designs within FBS framework, and more
accurately the B-FES framework, that adds the environment to the three previous
definitions.
A bibliometric study of the research area of videogames using Dimensions.ai database
Videogames are a very interesting area of research for fields as diverse as computer science, health, psychology or even social sciences. Every year a growing number of articles are published in different topics inside this field, so it is very convenient to study the different bibliometric data in order to consolidate the research efforts.
Thus, the aim of this work is to conduct a study on the distribution of articles related to videogames in the different fields of research, as well as to measure their interest over time, to identify the sources, countries and authors with the highest scientific production. In order to carry out this analysis, the information system Dimensions.ai has been considered, since it covers a large number of documents and allows for easy downloading and analysis of datasets.
According to the study, three countries are the most prolific in this area: USA, Canada and UK. The obtained results also indicate that the fields with the highest number of publications are Information and Computer Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, and Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, in this order. With regard to the impact of the publications, differences between the number of citations, and the number of Altmetric Attention Score, have been found
Anderson Localization in Disordered Vibrating Rods
We study, both experimentally and numerically, the Anderson localization
phenomenon in torsional waves of a disordered elastic rod, which consists of a
cylinder with randomly spaced notches. We find that the normal-mode wave
amplitudes are exponentially localized as occurs in disordered solids. The
localization length is measured using these wave amplitudes and it is shown to
decrease as a function of frequency. The normal-mode spectrum is also measured
as well as computed, so its level statistics can be analyzed. Fitting the
nearest-neighbor spacing distribution a level repulsion parameter is defined
that also varies with frequency. The localization length can then be expressed
as a function of the repulsion parameter. There exists a range in which the
localization length is a linear function of the repulsion parameter, which is
consistent with Random Matrix Theory. However, at low values of the repulsion
parameter the linear dependence does not hold.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Effect of a novel postbiotic containing lactic acid bacteria on the intestinal microbiota and disease resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Objective: This study was aimed to assess the effect of a novel postbiotic on bacterial community composition and structure within the intestinal ecosystem of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), as well as evaluate its capacity to protect rainbow trout from Lactococcus garvieae infection.
Results: After 30 days of dietary postbiotic supplementation, high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that bacterial community composition, diversity and richness were significantly higher in treated fish than in control fish. The proportion of sequences affiliated to the phylum Tenericutes, and to a lesser extent, the phyla Spirochaetes and Bacteroidetes was increased in fish fed a postbiotic-enriched diet compared to control fish, whereas the abundance of Fusobacteria was higher in control fish. Moreover, the treated fish showed significantly (p < 0.05) improved protection against L. garvieae compared to control fish.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that dietary postbiotic supplementation may represent an environmentally friendly strategy for preventing and controlling diseases in aquaculture
