Simplified Hand Configuration for Object Manipulation

    Get PDF
This work is focused on obtaining realistic human hand models that are suitable for manipulation tasks. Firstly, a 24 DOF kinematic model of the human hand is defined. This model is based on the human skeleton. Intra-finger and inter-finger constraints have been included in order to improve the movement realism. Secondly, two simplified hand descriptions (9 and 6 DOF) have been developed according to the constraints predefined. These simplified models involve some errors in reconstructing the hand posture. These errors are calculated with respect to the 24 DOF model and evaluated according to the hand gestures. Finally, some criteria are defined by which to select the hand description best suited to the features of the manipulation task

Seismic behavior of 1960's RC buildings exposed to marine environment

Steel rebars corrosion is one of the most important problems of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The mechanical performance loss of RC elements because of steel corrosion can be aggravated under horizontal loads (e.g. wind pressure or seismic actions). This paper presents a methodology for the study of the seismic behavior of a residential typology of the Mediterranean coast, which was widely spread during the 1960's. These RC frame structures are usually 10 to 15 stories high, located very close to the coast and are exempt buildings, which made them specially exposed to chloride corrosion. Besides, there are some design conditions that should be taken into account: (i) these structures were designed only under gravity loads, especially seismic actions were not considered. (ii) The raw materials had lower quality than those considered in current design codes, e.g. structural concrete strength was around 15 MPa, and made with natural beach sand as fine aggregates (hence including chlorides into the concrete mass). Therefore, two important aspects converge in these buildings, fifty years of marine exposure (i.e. degradation by corrosion) and the omission of the seismic loads in the original design, making them especially vulnerable to earthquakes (in an area with a moderate-high seismicity). Hence, a methodology for the seismic analysis of the corroded structure is proposed, in order to determine the structural safety factor of this type of structures, and evaluate the effectiveness of a retrofitting if necessary

Partial results from a study focused on determining characteristics of mathematical knowledge for teaching the concept of infinite limit of a function, a topic presented by a teacher. Foundations of this study are the model of Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT). In this study, two mathematics teachers from Spain and one from Mexico are involved. Researchers gathered data applying a semi-structured interview involving aspects of personal data, classroom, teacher planning and research on the topic. Researchers analyzed data in three phases, as follows: generation of the units of analysis, grouping into categories of these units, and determination of characteristics of knowledge. Results show that the teacher puts into action MKT's subdomains when planning of teaching the concept of limit with tendency to infinity of a function

    Get PDF
E-learning environments constitute an essential element in education, as they help students to ensure their pass their courses and graduate on time. Although guidelines, techniques, and methods have been presented in some literature in recent years to contribute to the development of accessible e-learning environments that promote digital inclusion, their implementation is challenging. In this context, the use of accessibility metadata not only provides a way to enhance the description of adapted educational resources but also facilitates their search according to the needs and preferences of students, in particular those with disabilities. In this paper, a systematic review was conducted in order to provide the state of the art regarding the use of accessibility metadata in e-learning environments. A total of 746 documents were found during the period from 2012 to 2019, of which 31 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria relevant to our review. The findings revealed an intensive use of models and standards of accessibility in e-learning environments, however, using accessibility metadata remains underused. In fact, the evaluation of accessibility and adaptability through the use of its metadata was not found. The fndings obtained also helped to establish challenges and opportunities in this research feld as well as to provide an overview that could support those who generate educational resources to keep their interest in making them accessible.publishedVersio

The aim of this paper is to explore and present a suitable socio-environmental proposal conducive to sustainable development considering the local aspects emphasizing on the joint between the social (citizenship and education) with the environmental (renewability). The rationale of the study is that having a dominant unsustainable social model that reinforces socioeconomic inequality and environmental degradation, a need of developing more integrative and innovative ways to cope with the social and the natural as well as the present and the future is required in order to lay the foundations for a more long-term sustainable development. To that end, a suitable arrangement is presented in order to articulate the social aspects (citizenship and education) to the environmental ones (renewability) from a local perspective, managed through social action strategies.Fil: González López, Sergio. Bilingual newsgroups in Catalonia: a challenge for machine translation

    Get PDF
This paper presents a linguistic analysis of a corpus of messages written in Catalan and Spanish, which come from several informal newsgroups on the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia; henceforth, UOC) Virtual Campus. The surrounding environment is one of extensive bilingualism and contact between Spanish and Catalan. The study was carried out as part of the INTERLINGUA project conducted by the UOC's Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3). Its main goal is to ascertain the linguistic characteristics of the e-mail register in the newsgroups in order to assess their implications for the creation of an online machine translation environment. The results shed empirical light on the relevance of characteristics of the e-mail register, the impact of language contact and interference, and their implications for the use of machine translation for CMC data in order to facilitate cross-linguistic communication on the Internet
