The conversion of ZIF-8 into ZIF-7 via post-synthetic modification with benzimidazole has been monitored by quantifying the liberated 2-methylimidazole by chromatography. The reaction kinetics have been adjusted to the shrinking core model, providing the diffusion coefficient of bIm inside the pores and the reaction kinetic constant (2.86 × 10-7 cm2 s-1 and 1.36 × 10-4 cm s-1, respectively). A wide variety of ZIF-7/8 hybrid core-shell frameworks have been obtained during this reaction. The most promising have been characterized by SEM/TEM, TGA, N2 and CO2 adsorption, FTIR and 13C NMR, showing features of the coexistence of both phases inside the frameworks. Their structures have also been simulated, providing comparable XRD and adsorption results. The hybrid material has been used as a filler for PBI mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) applied to H2/CO2 separation, enhancing the performances of the bare PBI polymer and MMMs containing ZIF-8 or ZIF-7 as a filler, with a maximum H2 permeability value of 1921 Barrer and a H2/CO2 selectivity of 11.8

Modeling the strangeness content of hadronic matter

The strangeness content of hadronic matter is studied in a string-flip model that reproduces various aspects of the QCD-inspired phenomenology, such as quark clustering at low density and color deconfinement at high density, while avoiding long range van der Waals forces. Hadronic matter is modeled in terms of its quark constituents by taking into account its internal flavor (u,d,s) and color (red, blue, green) degrees of freedom. Variational Monte-Carlo simulations in three spatial dimensions are performed for the ground-state energy of the system. The onset of the transition to strange matter is found to be influenced by weak, yet not negligible, clustering correlations. The phase diagram of the system displays an interesting structure containing both continuous and discontinuous phase transitions. Strange matter is found to be absolutely stable in the model.Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, 8 eps figures, revtex. Submitted to Phys. Rev. C, Presented at INPC2001 Berkeley, Ca. july 29-Aug

Dense circumnuclear molecular gas in starburst galaxies

We present results from a study of the dense circumnuclear molecular gas of starburst galaxies. The study aims to investigate the interplay between starbursts, active galactic nuclei and molecular gas.We characterize the dense gas traced by HCN, HCO and HNC and examine its kinematics in the circumnuclear regions of nine starburst galaxies observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We detect HCN (1-0) and HCO (1-0) in seven of the nine galaxies and HNC (1-0) in four. Approximately 7 arcsec resolution maps of the circumnuclear molecular gas are presented. The velocity-integrated intensity ratios, HCO (1-0)/HCN (1-0) and HNC (1-0)/HCN (1-0), are calculated. Using these integrated intensity ratios and spatial intensity ratio maps, we identify photon-dominated regions (PDRs) in NGC 1097, NGC 1365 and NGC 1808. We find no galaxy which shows the PDR signature in only one part of the observed nuclear region. We also observe unusually strong HNC emission in NGC 5236, but it is not strong enough to be consistent with X-ray-dominated region chemistry. Rotation curves are derived for five of the galaxies and dynamical mass estimates of the inner regions of three of the galaxies are made. © 2016 The Authors. This project was supported by the Brother Vincent Cotter Award for Physics (UNSW). Discrete Breathers in Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Nonlinear Schrodinger lattices

We study the structure and stability of discrete breathers (both pinned and mobile) in two-dimensional nonlinear anisotropic Schrodinger lattices. Starting from a set of identical one-dimensional systems we develop the continuation of the localized pulses from the weakly coupled regime (strongly anisotropic) to the homogeneous one (isotropic). Mobile discrete breathers are seen to be a superposition of a localized mobile core and an extended background of two-dimensional nonlinear plane waves. This structure is in agreement with previous results on onedimensional breather mobility. The study of the stability of both pinned and mobile solutions is performed using standard Floquet analysis. Regimes of quasi-collapse are found for both types of solutions, while another kind of instability (responsible for the discrete breather fission) is found for mobile solutions. The development of such instabilities is studied, examining typical trajectories on the unstable nonlinear manifold.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

Flat galaxies with dark matter halos - existence and stability

We consider a model for a flat, disk-like galaxy surrounded by a halo of dark matter, namely a Vlasov-Poisson type system with two particle species, the stars which are restricted to the galactic plane and the dark matter particles. These constituents interact only through the gravitational potential which stars and dark matter create collectively. Using a variational approach we prove the existence of steady state solutions and their nonlinear stability under suitably restricted perturbations.Comment: 39 page

Proceedings of: 6th International Conference on Soft Computing Models in Industrial and Environmental Applications (SOCO 2011). Salamanca, April 6-8, 2011Abstract: In this work, authors define a set of principles that should be contained in context-aware applications (including biometric sensors) to accomplish the legal aspect in Europe and USA. Paper presents the necessity to consider legal aspect, related with pri-vacy or human rights, into the development of the incipient context based services. Clearly, context based services and Ambient Intelligence (and the most promising work area in Europe that is Ambient Assisted Living, ALL) needs a great effort in research new identification procedures.Publicad

The dependence of oxygen and nitrogen abundances on stellar mass from the CALIFA survey

Context. The study of the integrated properties of star-forming galaxies is central to understand their formation and evolution. Some of these properties are extensive and therefore their analysis require totally covering and spatially resolved observations. Among these properties, metallicity can be defined in spiral discs by means of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of individual H ii regions. The simultaneous analysis of the abundances of primary elements, as oxygen, and secondary, as nitrogen, also provides clues about the star formation history and the processes that shape the build-up of spiral discs. Aims. Our main aim is to analyse simultaneously O/H and N/O abundance ratios in H ii regions in different radial positions of the discs in a large sample of spiral galaxies to obtain the slopes and the characteristic abundance ratios that can be related to their integrated properties. Methods. We analysed the optical spectra of individual selected H ii regions extracted from a sample of 350 spiral galaxies of the CALIFA survey. We calculated total O/H abundances and, for the first time, N/O ratios using the semi-empirical routine Hii-Chi-mistry, which, according to Pérez-Montero (2014, MNRAS, 441, 2663), is consistent with the direct method and reduces the uncertainty in the O/H derivation using [N ii] lines owing to the dispersion in the O/H-N/O relation. Then we performed linear fittings to the abundances as a function of the de-projected galactocentric distances. Results. The analysis of the radial distribution both for O/H and N/O in the non-interacting galaxies reveals that both average slopes are negative, but a non-negligible fraction of objects have a flat or even a positive gradient (at least 10% for O/H and 4% for N/O). The slopes normalised to the effective radius appear to have a slight dependence on the total stellar mass and the morphological type, as late low-mass objects tend to have flatter slopes. No clear relation is found, however, to explain the presence of inverted gradients in this sample, and there is no dependence between the average slopes and the presence of a bar. The relation between the resulting O/H and N/O linear fittings at the effective radius is much tighter (correlation coefficient ρ = 0.80) than between O/H and N/O slopes (ρ = 0.39) or for O/H and N/O in the individual H ii regions (ρ = 0.37). These O/H and N/O values at the effective radius also correlate very tightly (less than 0.03 dex of dispersion) with total luminosity and stellar mass. The relation with other integrated properties, such as star formation rate, colour, or morphology, can be understood only in light of the found relation with mass.E.P.M., J.M.V., C.K., S.P., and J.I.P. acknowledge support from the Spanish MICINN through grants AYA2010-21887-C04-01 and AYA2013-47742-C4-1-P and the Junta de Andalucia for grant EXC/2011 FQM-7058.
