    An In Vitro Study of the Role of Implant Positioning on Ulnohumeral Articular Contact in Distal Humeral Hemiarthroplasty

    © 2017 American Society for Surgery of the Hand Purpose To investigate the effect of implant positioning on ulnohumeral contact using patient-specific distal humeral (DH) implants. Methods Seven reverse-engineered DH implants were manufactured based on computed tomography scans of their osseous geometry. Native ulnae were paired with corresponding native humeri and custom DH implants in a loading apparatus. The ulna was set at 90° of flexion and the humeral component (either native bone or reverse-engineered implant) was positioned from 5° varus to 5° valgus in 2.5° increments under a 100-N compressive load. Contact with the ulna was measured with both the native distal humerus and the reverse-engineered DH implant at all varus-valgus (VV) angles, using a joint casting method. Contact patches were digitized and analyzed in 4 ulnar quadrants. Output variables were contact area and contact pattern. Results Mean contact area of the native articulation was significantly greater than with the distal humeral hemiarthroplasty (DHH) implants across all VV positions. Within the native condition, contact area did not significantly change owing to VV angulation. Within the DHH condition, contact area also did not significantly change owing to VV angulation. Conversely, in the DHH condition, contact pattern did significantly change. Medial ulnar contact pattern was significantly affected by VV angulation. Lateral ulnar contact was variably affected, but generally decreased as well. Conclusions Ulnar contact patterns were changed as a result of VV implant positioning using reverse-engineered DH implants, most notably on the medial aspect of the joint. Implant positioning plays a crucial role in producing contact patterns more like those observed in the native joint. Clinical relevance Recent clinical evidence reports nonsymmetrical ulnar wear after DHH. This work suggests that implant positioning is likely a contributing factor and that more exact implant positioning may lead to better clinical outcomes

    Critical current degradation in HTS wires due to cyclic mechanical strain

    HTS wires, which may be used in many devices such as magnets and rotating machines, may be subjected to mechanical strains from electromagnetic, thermal and centripetal forces. In some applications these strains will be repeated several thousand times during the lifetime of the device. We have measured critical current degradation due to repeated strain cycles for both compressive and tensile strains. Results for BSCCO-2223 HTS conductor samples are presented for strain values up to 0.5% and cycle numbers up to and beyond 10/sup 4/

    Optimization and assessment of phytoplankton size class algorithms for ocean color data on the Northeast U.S. continental shelf

    The size structure of phytoplankton communities influences important ecological and biogeochemical processes, including the transfer of energy through marine food webs. A variety of algorithms have been developed to estimate phytoplankton size classes (PSCs) from satellite ocean color data. However, many of these algorithms were developed for application to the global ocean, and their performance in more productive, optically complex coastal and continental shelf regions warrants evaluation. In this study, several existing PSC models were applied in the Northeast U.S. continental shelf (NES) region and compared with in situ PSC estimates derived from a local HPLC pigment data set. The effect of regional re-parameterization and incorporation of sea surface temperature (SST) into existing abundance-based model frameworks was investigated and model performance was assessed using an independent data set. Abundance-based model re-parameterization alone did not result in significant improvement in model performance compared with other models. However, the inclusion of SST led to a consistent reduction in model error for all size classes. Of two absorption-based algorithms tested, the best performing approach displayed similar performance metrics to the regional SST-dependent abundance-based model. The SST-dependent model and the absorption-based method were applied to monthly composites of the NES region for April and September 2019 and qualitatively compared. The results highlight the benefit of considering SST in abundance-based models and the applicability of absorption-based PSC methods in optically complex regions

    Evaluation of a computational model to predict elbow range of motion

Computer models capable of predicting elbow flexion and extension range of motion (ROM) limits would be useful for assisting surgeons in improving the outcomes of surgical treatment of patients with elbow contractures. A simple and robust computer-based model was developed that predicts elbow joint ROM using bone geometries calculated from computed tomography image data. The model assumes a hinge-like flexion-extension axis, and that elbow passive ROM limits can be based on terminal bony impingement. The model was validated against experimental results with a cadaveric specimen, and was able to predict the flexion and extension limits of the intact joint to 0° and 3°, respectively. The model was also able to predict the flexion and extension limits to 1° and 2°, respectively, when simulated osteophytes were inserted into the joint. Future studies based on this approach will be used for the prediction of elbow flexion-extension ROM in patients with primary osteoarthritis to help identify motion-limiting hypertrophic osteophytes, and will eventually permit real-time computer-assisted navigated excisions

    Scalar field in the Bianchi I: Non commutative classical and Quantum Cosmology

    Using the ADM formalism in the minisuperspace, we obtain the commutative and noncommutative exact classical solutions and exact wave function to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with an arbitrary factor ordering, for the anisotropic Bianchi type I cosmological model, coupled to a scalar field, cosmological term and barotropic perfect fluid. We introduce noncommutative scale factors, considering that all minisuperspace variables qi\rm q^i do not commute, so the symplectic structure was modified. In the classical regime, it is shown that the anisotropic parameter β±nc\rm \beta_{\pm nc} and the field ϕ\phi, for some value in the λeff\lambda_{eff} cosmological term and noncommutative θ\theta parameter, present a dynamical isotropization up to a critical cosmic time tct_{c}; after this time, the effects of isotropization in the noncommutative minisuperspace seems to disappear. In the quantum regimen, the probability density presents a new structure that corresponds to the value of the noncommutativity parameter.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, Acepted in IJT

    Fear of the unknown: a pre-departure qualitative study of Turkish international students

    This paper presents findings from eleven in-depth interviews with Turkish undergraduate students, who were, by the time of data collection, about to spend a semester at a European university under the Erasmus exchange scheme. The students all agreed to be interviewed about their feelings about studying in a foreign culture, and were found to be anxious prior to departure about the quality of accommodation in the new destination, their language ability and the opportunity to form friendships. Fears were expressed about possible misconceptions over Turkey as a Muslim and a developing country. Suggestions are made for HEI interventions to allay student travellers’ concerns

    Population Genetics of Bowhead Whales (Baleana mysticetus) in the Western Arctic

    Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas experienced a severe reduction as a result of commercial whaling in the 19th century. Since the cessation of commercial whaling, the population has recovered to a size that is approaching pre-whaling estimates. Inupiat and Yupik communities in northern and western Alaska hunt these Western Arctic (WA) bowheads along their migratory path during spring and fall. This hunting is regulated by the International Whaling Commission. Recent but preliminary analysis of available genetic data (207 whales and 10 microsatellite markers) raised the question of the presence of multiple, genetically distinct populations within the WA bowheads. Here we re-examined this question on the basis of a study of 414 whales and 22 newly developed microsatellite loci. We identified widespread departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium; however, we were unable to detect significant evidence of multiple genetic populations within the WA bowheads that could explain this Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium, particularly when compared to the strength of evidence for differentiation between WA bowheads and other populations from distant regions such as the Okhotsk Sea and eastern Canada. There was conclusive evidence of genetic differentiation among the three regions. The statistical rejection of panmixia within the WA improves our understanding of bowhead whale biology, and the lack of evidence for multiple populations within the WA enables risk-averse management of aboriginal hunting of Western Arctic bowhead whales.La population de baleines boréales (Balaena mysticetus) des mers de Béring, de Tchoukotka et de Beaufort a enregistré un grave déclin en raison de la pêche commerciale à la baleine au XIXe siècle. Depuis que la pêche commerciale à la baleine a cessé, la population de baleines boréales a connu un certain essor au point où elle approche maintenant les estimations de la taille qu’elle avait avant la pêche commerciale à la baleine. Les collectivités Inupiat et Yupik du nord et de l’ouest de l’Alaska chassent les baleines boréales de l’ouest de l’Arctique le long de leur voie de migration au printemps et à l’automne. La chasse est réglementée par l’International Whaling Commission. Des analyses récentes, bien que préliminaires, des données génétiques disponibles (207 baleines et 10 marqueurs microsatellites) ont soulevé la question de la présence de multiples populations génétiquement distinctes au sein de la population de baleines boréales de l’ouest de l’Alaska. Il y avait des preuves concluantes de différenciation génétique entre les trois régions.     International education: a force for peace and cross-cultural understanding?

    This paper discusses the notion that the international sojourn has the potential to transform sojourners into cultural mediators who carry the power to improve global relations. A year-long ethnographic study of the adjustment experiences of international postgraduate students in England revealed a universal early enthusiasm for cross-cultural contact that was matched by a widespread adoption of segregated patterns of interacting. The most common friendship networks were described by bonds with conationals, and yet all students attested to an increase in their cultural learning and mindfulness by the end of the sojourn. Nevertheless, intercultural competence was maximised only in those few students who pursued a multicultural strategy of interaction, leading the researcher to call on Higher Education Institutions to instigate policies to encourage lasting cross-cultural contact

Визначено основні проблеми та окреслено перспективи використання міжнародних рамок та стандартів у розвитку професійних якостей вчителя.В статье представлены подходы к развитию информационно-коммуникационной компетентности учителя в контексте международных подходов. Рассмотрены рамки цифровой компетентности граждан и педагогов, служащих эталонной моделью для образовательных систем стран Европы. Определены основные проблемы и намечены перспективы использования международных рамок и стандартов в развитии профессиональных качеств учителя.The approaches to the information and communication competence development in the context of international tendencies are revealed in the article.The framework of digital competence of citizens and educators, which serve as a reference model for educational systems of European countries, is considered.
