Influence of Social Context and Affect on Individuals\u27 Implementation of Information Security Safeguards

Individuals’ use of safeguards against information security risks is commonly conceptualized as the result of a risk-benefit analysis. This economic perspective assumes a “rational actor” whereas risk is subjectively perceived by people who may be influenced by a number of social, psychological, cultural, and other “soft” factors. Their decisions thus may deviate from what economic risk assessment analysis would dictate. In this respect, a phenomenon interesting to study is that on social network sites (SNSes) people tend to, despite a number of potential security risks, provide an amount of personal information that they would otherwise frown upon. In this study we explore how people’s affect toward online social networking may impact their use of privacy safeguards. Since building social capital is a main purpose of online social networking, we use social capital theory to examine some potential contextual influence on the formation of the affect. More specifically, we adopt the perspective proposed by Nahapiet and Ghoshal (1998), which views social capital as a composite of structural, relational, and cognitive capitals. Preliminary analysis of 271 survey responses shows that (a) a person’s structural and relational embeddedness in her online social networks, as well as her cognitive ability in maintaining those networks, are positively related to her affect toward SNSes; (b) a person’s affect toward SNSes moderates the relationship between her perception of privacy risk and the privacy safeguards she implements on the SNSes

    Swarm Flyby Gravimetry

This study describes a new technology for discerning the gravity fields and mass distribution of a solar system small body, without requiring dedicated orbiters or landers. Instead of a lander, a spacecraft releases a collection of small, simple probes during a flyby past an asteroid or comet. By tracking those probes from the host spacecraft, one can estimate the asteroid's gravity field and infer its underlying composition and structure. This approach offers a diverse measurement set, equivalent to planning and executing many independent and unique flyby encounters of a single spacecraft. This report assesses a feasible hardware implementation, derives the underlying models, and analyzes the performance of this concept via simulation. In terms of hardware, a small, low mass, low cost implementation is presented, which consists of a dispenser and probes. The dispenser contains roughly 12 probes in a tube and has a total size commensurate with a 6U P-Pod. The probes are housed in disc shaped sabots. When commanded, the dispenser ejects the top-most probe using a linear motor. The ejected probe separates from its sabots and unfolds using internal springs. There are two types of probes, each designed for a particular tracking modality. The reflective probe type, tracked by a telescope, unfolds to forma diffusely reflective sphere. The retroreflector probe type, tracked by a lidar, unfolds to form a corner-cube retroreflector assembly. Both types are designed to spherical so that their attitude doesn't affect the spacecraft's tracking performance. This analysis indicates that the point-mass term of small bodies larger than roughly 500 m in diameter can be observed from a host spacecraft that tracks locally deployed probes throughout a flyby to an uncertainty of better than 5%. The conditions by which this measurement is possible depends on the characteristics of the asteroid (size, type), the flyby velocity, and the type of tracking available (angles-only or angles+ranging). For most encounters, a few (1-3) well placed probes can be very effective, with marginal improvement for additional probes. Given realistic deployment errors, an encounter may require roughly 10-12 probes to ensure that 1-3 achieve their target. Long duration tracking of probes flying by large asteroids (>5 km diameter) can sometimes provide observability of the gravity field's first spherical harmonic, J( sub 2). In summary, this method offers a feasible, affordable approach to enabling or augmenting flyby science

From evidence to practice: Developing best practice guidelines for the delivery of activities to people living with moderate to advanced dementia using a pragmatic observational study

The benefits of physical activities for those living with moderate to advanced dementia are well documented and include improved well-being and quality of life. What is less well known is how best to deliver such activities to make them meaningful for those taking part and, more generally, how to develop good practice guidance for working with this group. This article reports on an observational study of a physical activity programme in a residential care setting, Mobile Me, and on the process used to develop good practice guidance from it, which included input from a range of stakeholders. Learnings from this study conclude that changes in delivery and setting can contribute to a difference in the quality of the experience for participants and their levels of well-being during sessions. The findings from the study were consolidated into four themes for disseminating best practice: promoting the right atmosphere, environment, communication, and adaptations. These form part of a new multimedia best practice guide for delivering physical activities to those living with moderate to advanced dementia

    PROVE Primary Battery Structure

In conjunction with Prototype Vehicle (PROVE) Laboratory, our group designed, manufactured, and tested a prototype structure to house the battery boxes for PROVE’s endurance vehicle. Our structure was designed to support the batteries during normal use, and in the event of a front crash. Our design is comprised of a secondary composite box to house the battery boxes, a bottom plate to affix the secondary box to the chassis floor, a horizontal plate fastened to the chassis, and a brace structure welded to the chassis. From the outset, we chose to use a secondary box, the primary battery boxes must be removable, and we could not directly affix supports. In areas of less certainty, such as the number of support or the strength of support methods, we initially used intuition to make decisions, and allowed room for iteration once we had sufficient analysis later in the project. After developing our initial structure, we created FEM case studies on the full assembly, and used hand calculations to verify our FEM. We were most concerned with the deflection of the front wall in a front 20g crash. We used laminate plate theory in a python algorithm to verify FEM results for the front wall deflection. We found that the brace structure failed in the FEM study. However, we also anticipate redesigning or possibly removing the brace in favor of an additional plate joining the chassis tubes parallel to the front wall. Our team manufactured layups of carbon fiber sandwich panels and L channels for the secondary structure and bottom plate. We successfully integrated the bottom plate and secondary box. However, due to tolerancing issues and discrepancies between the CAD and the physical vehicle our brace structure requires alteration to be integrated. Threaded inserts were manufactured on a lathe and bonded into the panels to allow for them to be integrated onto the chassis. The secondary structure was manufactured smoothly and could fit onto the chassis, which is a great success. One of the two horizontal plates and braces were water jetted and welded respectively, but they need to be redesigned to properly suit their integration. Additionally, our team characterized the Elastic moduli and Poisson’s ratio of carbon fiber material using tensile and strain gauge testing

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders are common medical problems encountered by physicians and affected 126.6 million Americans in 2012. Musculoskeletal education has inadequate in United States medical schools. Objective: To determine the musculoskeletal competency of third year medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional 25-question nationally validated musculoskeletal competency exam was given to the third year medical students. A survey was given to second and third year medical students to assess students’ level of interest in musculoskeletal medicine and their feedback regarding the curriculum. Results: The mean score of the competency exam was 69.0%. There was 48/107 (44.9%) students’ who reached the minimum passing score of 70%. Free-response feedback from both classes featured themes of more hands-on learning, a longer clinical block, and more small-group learning sessions. Conclusions: Third year medical students scored relatively well on the exam. Student feedback suggests the 2-week musculoskeletal block is useful and relevant to their future careers
