    The Quiet-Sun Photosphere and Chromosphere

    The overall structure and the fine structure of the solar photosphere outside active regions are largely understood, except possibly important roles of a turbulent near-surface dynamo at its bottom, internal gravity waves at its top, and small-scale vorticity. Classical 1D static radiation-escape modelling has been replaced by 3D time-dependent MHD simulations that come closer to reality. The solar chromosphere, in contrast, remains ill-understood although its pivotal role in coronal mass and energy loading makes it a principal research area. Its fine structure defines its overall structure, so that hard-to-observe and hard-to-model small-scale dynamical processes are the key to understanding. However, both chromospheric observation and chromospheric simulation presently mature towards the required sophistication.     Aperture Increase Options for the Dutch Open Telescope

    This paper is an invitation to the international community to participate in the usage and a substantial upgrade of the Dutch Open Telescope on La Palma (DOT, \url{http://dot.astro.uu.nl}). We first give a brief overview of the approach, design, and current science capabilities of the DOT. The DOT database (\url{http://dotdb.phys.uu.nl/DOT}) now contains many tomographic image sequences with 0.2-0.3 arcsec resolution and up to multi-hour duration. You are welcome to pull them over for analysis. The main part of this contribution outlines DOT upgrade designs implementing larger aperture. The motivation for aperture increase is the recognition that optical solar physics needs the substantially larger telescope apertures that became useful with the advent of adaptive optics and viable through the DOT's open principle, both for photospheric polarimetry at high resolution and high sensitivity and for chromospheric fine-structure diagnosis at high cadence and full spectral sampling. Realization of an upgrade requires external partnership(s).     An International Ultraviolet Explorer Archival Study of Dwarf Novae in Outburst

    We present a synthetic spectral analysis of nearly the entire far ultraviolet International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archive of spectra of dwarf novae in or near outburst. The study includes 46 systems of all dwarf nova subtypes both above and below the period gap. The spectra were uniformly analyzed using synthetic spectral codes for optically thick accretion disks and stellar photospheres along with the best-available distance measurements or estimates.     GJ 900: A new hierarchical system with low-mass components

    Speckle interferometric observations made with the 6 m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2000 revealed the triple nature of the nearby (πHip=51.80±1.74\pi_{Hip}=51.80\pm1.74 mas) low-mass young (≈200\approx200 Myr) star GJ 900. The configuration of the triple system allowed it to be dynamically unstable. Differential photometry performed from 2000 through 2004 yielded II- and KK-band absolute magnitudes and spectral types for the components to be IAI_{A}=6.66±\pm0.08, IBI_{B}=9.15±\pm0.11, ICI_{C}=10.08±\pm0.26, KAK_{A}=4.84±\pm0.08, KBK_{B}=6.76±\pm0.20, KCK_{C}=7.39±\pm0.31, SpASp_{A}≈\approxK5--K7, SpBSp_{B}≈\approxM3--M4, SpCSp_{C}≈\approxM5--M6. The ``mass--luminosity'' relation is used to estimate the individual masses of the components: MA\mathcal{M}_{A}≈0.64M⊙\approx0.64\mathcal{M}_{\odot}, MB\mathcal{M}_{B}≈0.21M⊙\approx0.21\mathcal{M}_{\odot}, MC\mathcal{M}_{C}≈0.13M⊙\approx0.13\mathcal{M}_{\odot}. From the observations of the components relative motion in the period 2000--2006, we conclude that GJ 900 is a hierarchical triple star with the possible orbital periods PA−BC_{A-BC}≈\approx80 yrs and PBC_{BC}≈\approx20 yrs. An analysis of the 2MASS images of the region around GJ 900 leads us to suggest that the system can include other very-low-mass components.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Innate lymphoid cells (ILC) are important barrier tissue immune regulators. They play a pivotal role in early non-specific protection against infiltrating pathogens, regulation of epithelial integrity, suppression of pro-inflammatory immune responses and shaping the intestinal microbiota. GATA2 haploinsufficiency causes an immune disorder that is characterized by bone marrow failure and (near) absence of monocytes, dendritic cells, B cells and natural killer (NK) cells. T cells develop normally, albeit at lower numbers. Here, we describe the absence of ILCs and their progenitors in blood and bone marrow of two patients with GATA2 haploinsufficiency and show that all subsets of ILCs appear after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, irrespective of the preparative conditioning regimen. Our data indicate that GATA2 is involved in the development of hematopoietic precursor cells (HPC) towards the ILC lineage

    The decay of optical emission from the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 970228

    We present the R_c band light curve of the optical transient (OT) associated with GRB970228, based on re-evaluation of existing photometry. Data obtained until April 1997 suggested a slowing down of the decay of the optical brightness. However, the HST observations in September 1997 show that the light curve of the point source is well represented by a single power law, with a ``dip'', about a week after the burst occured. The exponent of the power law decay is α\alpha = --1.10 ±\pm 0.04.     Some Like it Hot: The X-Ray Emission of The Giant Star YY Mensae

    (Abridged abstract) We present an analysis of the X-ray emission of the rapidly rotating giant star YY Mensae observed by Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton. Although no obvious flare was detected, the X-ray luminosity changed by a factor of two between the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations taken 4 months apart. The coronal abundances and the emission measure distribution have been derived from three different methods using optically thin collisional ionization equilibrium models. The abundances show an inverse first ionization potential (FIP) effect. We further find a high N abundance which we interpret as a signature of material processed in the CNO cycle. The corona is dominated by a very high temperature (20-40 MK) plasma, which places YY Men among the magnetically active stars with the hottest coronae. Lower temperature plasma also coexists, albeit with much lower emission measure. Line broadening is reported, which we interpret as Doppler thermal broadening, although rotational broadening due to X-ray emitting material high above the surface could be present as well. We use two different formalisms to discuss the shape of the emission measure distribution. The first one infers the properties of coronal loops, whereas the second formalism uses flares as a statistical ensemble. We find that most of the loops in the corona of YY Men have their maximum temperature equal to or slightly larger than about 30 MK. We also find that small flares could contribute significantly to the coronal heating in YY Men. Although there is no evidence of flare variability in the X-ray light curves, we argue that YY Men's distance and X-ray brightness does not allow us to detect flares with peak luminosities Lx <= 10^{31} erg/s with current detectors.Comment: Accepted paper to appear in Astrophysical Journal, issue Nov 10, 2004 (v615).     Irradiation of the secondary star in X-ray Nova Scorpii 1994 (=GRO J1655--40)

    We have obtained intermediate resolution optical spectra of the black-hole candidate Nova Sco 1994 in June 1996, when the source was in an X-ray/optical active state (R~15.05). We measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary star and obtain a semi-amplitude of 279+/-10 km/s; a value which is 30 per cent larger than the value obtained when the source is in quiescence. Our large value for K_2 is consistent with 60 +9,-7 per cent of the secondary star's surface being heated; compared to 35 per cent, which is what one would expect if only the inner face of the secondary star were irradiated. Effects such as irradiation-induced flows on the secondary star may be important in explaining the observed large value for K_2.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted by MNRA

Indeed, this work refers to a study whose main objective is to set the influence that a teaching approach based on the use of computer simulation would have on students’ learning, compared to the one in use today. This work involved the participation of two classes of 11th grade at a Secondary School in Lisbon, Portugal, where the main goal is to teach a specific topic to an untried student’s group. With regard to the simulation environment, it will be grounded on a Proof Theoretical approach to Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, which caters for the handling of incomplete, unknown or even self-contradictory information or knowledge
