    Disability Rights in Laos

    Relatively poor immunization and health standards, inadequate transportation infrastructure, and explosive remnants of war from previous conflicts are prevalent causes of disability in Laos. The exact number of disabled people living in Laos today is unknown due to inadequate surveys, poor reporting and little incentive for individuals to register as disabled. Despite the large number of disabled persons in Laos, they are a highly underrepresented minority. However, disability issues have become increasingly mainstream in Lao society in recent years, and a renewed effort to secure disability rights has ensued

    De novo draft assembly of the Botrylloides leachii genome provides further insight into tunicate evolution

    Tunicates are marine invertebrates that compose the closest phylogenetic group to the vertebrates. These chordates present a particularly diverse range of regenerative abilities and life-history strategies. Consequently, tunicates provide an extraordinary perspective into the emergence and diversity of these traits. Here we describe the genome sequencing, annotation and analysis of the Stolidobranchian Botrylloides leachii. We have produced a high-quality 159 Mb assembly, 82% of the predicted 194  Mb genome. Analysing genome size, gene number, repetitive elements, orthologs clustering and gene ontology terms show that B. leachii has a genomic architecture similar to that of most solitary tunicates, while other recently sequenced colonial ascidians have undergone genome expansion. In addition, ortholog clustering has identified groups of candidate genes for the study of colonialism and whole-body regeneration. By analysing the structure and composition of conserved gene linkages, we observed examples of cluster breaks and gene dispersions, suggesting that several lineage-specific genome rearrangements occurred during tunicate evolution. We also found lineage-specific gene gain and loss within conserved cell-signalling pathways. Such examples of genetic changes within conserved cell-signalling pathways commonly associated with regeneration and development that may underlie some of the diverse regenerative abilities observed in tunicates. Overall, these results provide a novel resource for the study of tunicates and of colonial ascidians

    Operative and Radiographic Acetabular Component Orientation in Total Hip Replacement: Influence of Pelvic Orientation and Surgical Positioning Technique

    Orthopaedic surgeons often experience a mismatch between perceived intra-operative and radiographic acetabular cup orientation. This research aimed to assess the impact of pelvic orientation and surgical positioning technique on operative and radiographic cup orientation. Radiographic orientations for two surgical approaches were computationally simulated: a mechanical alignment guide and a transverse acetabular ligament approach, both in combination with different pelvic orientations. Positional errors were defined as the difference between the target radiographic orientation and that achieved. The transverse acetabular ligament method demonstrated smaller positional errors for radiographic version; 4.0° ± 2.9° as compared to 9.4° ± 7.3° for the mechanical alignment guide method. However, both methods resulted in similar errors in radiographic inclination. Multiple regression analysis showed that intraoperative pelvic rotation about the anterior-posterior axis was a strong predictor for these errors (B TAL = −0.893, B MAG = −0.951, p &lt; 0.01). Application of the transverse acetabular ligament method can reduce errors in radiographic version. However, if the orthopaedic surgeon is referencing off the theatre floor to control inclination when operating in lateral decubitus, this is only reliable if the pelvic sagittal plane is horizontal. There is currently no readily available method for ensuring that this is the case during total hip replacement surgery. </p

    Placental multimodal MRI prior to spontaneous preterm birth <32 weeks' gestation: An observational study

    Objective: To utilise combined diffusion‐relaxation MRI techniques to interrogate antenatal changes in the placenta prior to extreme preterm birth among both women with PPROM and membranes intact, and compare this to a control group who subsequently delivered at term. Design: Observational study. Setting: Tertiary Obstetric Unit, London, UK. Population: Cases: pregnant women who subsequently spontaneously delivered a singleton pregnancy prior to 32 weeks' gestation without any other obstetric complications. Controls: pregnant women who delivered an uncomplicated pregnancy at term. Methods: All women consented to an MRI examination. A combined diffusion‐relaxation MRI of the placenta was undertaken and analysed using fractional anisotropy, a combined T2*‐apparent diffusion coefficient model and a combined T2*‐intravoxel incoherent motion model, in order to provide a detailed placental phenotype associated with preterm birth. Subgroup analyses based on whether women in the case group had PPROM or intact membranes at time of scan, and on latency to delivery were performed. Main Outcome Measures: Fractional anisotropy, apparent diffusion coefficients and T2* placental values, from two models including a combined T2*‐IVIM model separating fast‐ and slow‐flowing (perfusing and diffusing) compartments. Results: This study included 23 women who delivered preterm and 52 women who delivered at term. Placental T2* was lower in the T2*‐apparent diffusion coefficient model (p < 0.001) and in the fast‐ and slow‐flowing compartments (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001) of the T2*‐IVIM model. This reached a higher level of significance in the preterm prelabour rupture of the membranes group than in the membranes intact group. There was a reduced perfusion fraction among the cases with impending delivery. Conclusions: Placental diffusion‐relaxation reveals significant changes in the placenta prior to preterm birth with greater effect noted in cases of preterm prelabour rupture of the membranes. Application of this technique may allow clinically valuable interrogation of histopathological changes before preterm birth. In turn, this could facilitate more accurate antenatal prediction of preterm chorioamnionitis and so aid decisions around the safest time of delivery. Furthermore, this technique provides a research tool to improve understanding of the pathological mechanisms associated with preterm birth in vivo

    Magnetic Ordering in the Ising Antiferromagnetic Pyrochlore Nd2ScNbO7

    The question of structural disorder and its effects on magnetism is relevant to a number of spin liquid candidate materials. Although commonly thought of as a route to spin glass behavior, here we describe a system in which the structural disorder results in long-range antiferromagnetic order due to local symmetry breaking. Nd2_2ScNbO7_7 is shown to have a dispersionless gapped excitation observed in other neodymium pyrochlores below TN_N = 0.37 K through polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. However the dispersing spin waves are not observed. This excited mode is shown to occur in only 14(2) \% of the neodymium ions through spectroscopy and is consistent with total scattering measurements as well as the magnitude of the dynamic moment 0.26(2) ÎŒB\mu_B. The remaining magnetic species order completely into the all-in all-out Ising antiferromagnetic structure. This can be seen as a result of local symmetry breaking due disordered Sc+3^{+3} and Nb+5^{+5} ions about the A-site. From this work, it has been established that B-site disorder restores the dipole-like behaviour of the Nd+3^{+3} ions compared to the Nd2_2B2_2O7_7 parent series

    3D T2w fetal body MRI:automated organ volumetry, growth charts and population-averaged atlas

    Structural fetal body MRI provides true 3D information required for volumetry of fetal organs. However, current clinical and research practice primarily relies on manual slice-wise segmentation of raw T2-weighted stacks, which is time consuming, subject to inter- and intra-observer bias and affected by motion-corruption. Furthermore, there are no existing standard guidelines defining a universal approach to parcellation of fetal organs. This work produces the first parcellation protocol of the fetal body organs for motion-corrected 3D fetal body MRI. It includes 10 organ ROIs relevant to fetal quantitative volumetry studies. We also introduce the first population-averaged T2w MRI atlas of the fetal body. The protocol was used as a basis for training of a neural network for automated organ segmentation. It showed robust performance for different gestational ages. This solution minimises the need for manual editing and significantly reduces time. The general feasibility of the proposed pipeline was also assessed by analysis of organ growth charts created from automated parcellations of 91 normal control 3T MRI datasets that showed expected increase in volumetry during 22-38 weeks gestational age range. In addition, the results of comparison between 60 normal and 12 fetal growth restriction datasets revealed significant differences in organ volumes.</p

    Long-term ocean and resource dynamics in a hotspot of climate change

    Unidad de excelencia MarĂ­a de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-MThe abundance, distribution, and size of marine species are linked to temperature and nutrient regimes and are profoundly affected by humans through exploitation and climate change. Yet little is known about long-term historical links between ocean environmental changes and resource abundance to provide context for current and potential future trends and inform conservation and management. We synthesize >4000 years of climate and marine ecosystem dynamics in a Northwest Atlantic region currently undergoing rapid changes, the Gulf of Maine and Scotian Shelf. This period spans the late Holocene cooling and recent warming and includes both Indigenous and European influence. We compare environmental records from instrumental, sedimentary, coral, and mollusk archives with ecological records from fossils, archaeological, historical, and modern data, and integrate future model projections of environmental and ecosystem changes. This multidisciplinary synthesis provides insight into multiple reference points and shifting baselines of environmental and ecosystem conditions, and projects a near-future departure from natural climate variability in 2028 for the Scotian Shelf and 2034 for the Gulf of Maine. Our work helps advancing integrative end-to-end modeling to improve the predictive capacity of ecosystem forecasts with climate change. Our results can be used to adjust marine conservation strategies and network planning and adapt ecosystem-based management with climate change

    What Affects Social Attention? Social Presence, Eye Contact and Autistic Traits

    Social understanding is facilitated by effectively attending to other people and the subtle social cues they generate. In order to more fully appreciate the nature of social attention and what drives people to attend to social aspects of the world, one must investigate the factors that influence social attention. This is especially important when attempting to create models of disordered social attention, e.g. a model of social attention in autism. Here we analysed participants' viewing behaviour during one-to-one social interactions with an experimenter. Interactions were conducted either live or via video (social presence manipulation). The participant was asked and then required to answer questions. Experimenter eye-contact was either direct or averted. Additionally, the influence of participant self-reported autistic traits was also investigated. We found that regardless of whether the interaction was conducted live or via a video, participants frequently looked at the experimenter's face, and they did this more often when being asked a question than when answering. Critical differences in social attention between the live and video interactions were also observed. Modifications of experimenter eye contact influenced participants' eye movements in the live interaction only; and increased autistic traits were associated with less looking at the experimenter for video interactions only. We conclude that analysing patterns of eye-movements in response to strictly controlled video stimuli and natural real-world stimuli furthers the field's understanding of the factors that influence social attention
