    State lottery revenue: the importance of game characteristics

    Previous studies find state lottery sales are significantly influenced by socioeconomic characteristics of the population. We extend this literature by examining how the overall expected value, the top prize, and the total combinations influence sales after controlling for these other socioeconomic factors. We perform our empirical analysis on an unparalleled set of data that includes information for 135 on-line lottery games in the United States. Our results show that sales are significantly influenced the top prize amount and odds of winning it, but that sales are not significantly affected by the expected value of the remaining lower prizes.Gambling industry

    Consumption Externalities and Economic Welfare

    The distinction between technological and pecuniary externalities, usually made in production, can also be applied to consumption. Technological externalities create resource misallocations while pecuniary externalities do not. Taking a household production approach to consumption, this paper shows that many cases in which there are external effects on people's utility functions are pecuniary externalities, and public policy should ignore them. The economic literature has been inconsistent in its treatment of pecuniary consumption externalities, and this paper provides a framework for analysis in cases where the actions of some people affect the utility of others.Consumption; Economic Welfare; Externalities; Welfare

    Leveraging Geospatial Information to address Space Epidemiology through Multi\unicode{x2013}omics \unicode{x2013} Report of an Interdisciplinary Workshop

    This article will summarize the workshop proceedings of a workshop conducted at the University of Missouri that addressed the use of multi-omics fused with geospatial information to assess and improve the precision and environmental analysis of indicators of crew space health. The workshop addressed the state of the art of multi-omics research and practice and the potential future use of multi-omics platforms in extreme environments. The workshop also focused on potential new strategies for data collection, analysis, and fusion with crosstalk with the field of environmental health, biosecurity, and radiation safety, addressing gaps and shortfalls and potential new approaches to enhancing astronaut health safety and security. Ultimately, the panel proceedings resulted in a synthesis of new research and translational opportunities to improve space and terrestrial epidemiology. In the future, early disease prevention that employs new and expanded data sources enhanced by the analytic precision of geospatial information and artificial intelligence algorithms.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur

    Conceivability and Possibility

    Some people might be tempted by modal ontological arguments from the possibility that God exists to the conclusion that God in fact exists. They might also be tempted to support the claim that possibly God exists by appealing to the conceivability of God’s existence. In this chapter, I introduce three constraints on an adequate theory of philosophical conceivability. I then consider and develop both imagination-based accounts of conceivability and conceptual coherence-based accounts of conceivability. Finally, I return to the modal ontological argument and consider whether the premise that possibly God exists can be supported by some conceiving

    Py-GC/MS applied to the analysis of synthetic organic pigments: characterization and identification in paint samples

    A collection of 76 synthetic organic pigments was analysed using pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The purpose of this work was to expand the knowledge on synthetic pigments and to assess characteristic pyrolysis products that could help in the identification of these pigments in paint samples. We analysed several classes of synthetic pigments not previously reported as being analysed by this technique: some metal complexes, β-naphthol pigment lakes, BONA pigment lakes, disazopyrazolone, triarylcarbonium, dioxazine, anthraquinone, indanthrone, isoindoline and thioindigo classes. We also report for the first time the Py-GC/MS analysis of a number of naphthol AS, benzimidazolone, phthalocyanine and perylene pigments and other miscellaneous pigments including pigments with unpublished chemical structure. We successfully used the Py-GC/MS technique for the analysis of paints by artists Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock to identify the synthetic organic pigments and the binding media

    Linkage study of fibrinogen levels: the Strong Heart Family Study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis involves both hemostatic and inflammatory mechanisms. Fibrinogen is associated with both risk of thrombosis and inflammation. A recent meta-analysis showed that risk of coronary heart disease may increase 1.8 fold for 1 g/L of increased fibrinogen, independent of traditional risk factors. It is known that fibrinogen levels may be influenced by demographic, environmental and genetic factors. Epidemiologic and candidate gene studies are available; but few genome-wide linkage studies have been conducted, particularly in minority populations. The Strong Heart Study has demonstrated an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the American Indian population, and therefore represents an important source for genetic-epidemiological investigations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Strong Heart Family Study enrolled over 3,600 American Indian participants in large, multi-generational families, ascertained from an ongoing population-based study in the same communities. Fibrinogen was determined using standard technique in a central laboratory and extensive additional phenotypic measures were obtained. Participants were genotyped for 382 short tandem repeat markers distributed throughout the genome; and results were analyzed using a variance decomposition method, as implemented in the SOLAR 2.0 program.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data from 3535 participants were included and after step-wise, linear regression analysis, two models were selected for investigation. Basic demographic adjustments constituted model 1, while model 2 considered waist circumference, diabetes mellitus and postmenopausal status as additional covariates. Five LOD scores between 1.82 and 3.02 were identified, with the maximally adjusted model showing the highest score on chromosome 7 at 28 cM. Genes for two key components of the inflammatory response, i.e. interleukin-6 and "signal transducer and activator of transcription 3" (<it>STAT3</it>), were identified within 2 and 8 Mb of this 1 LOD drop interval respectively. A LOD score of 1.82 on chromosome 17 between 68 and 93 cM is supported by reports from two other populations with LOD scores of 1.4 and 1.95.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In a minority population with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, strong evidence for a novel genetic determinant of fibrinogen levels is found on chromosome 7 at 28 cM. Four other loci, some of which have been suggested by previous studies, were also identified.</p
