Finite Element Analysis of a Guideway for Automated Transit Networks

An asymmetric beam currently being utilized in a solar powered automated transit system was analyzed for its deflections, stresses, and angle of twist. Finite element analysis (FEA) with ANSYS was used in conjunction with hand calculations from beam theory to determine the response of the guideway to loading anticipated in normal operation. An iterative approach was used for modeling the system, where the geometry was taken from a simplified case and progressed in complexity until the original model was duplicated. After analysis, the deflections, stresses, and angles of twist were found to be within suitable ranges for a suspended transportation system

The expression pattern of MUC1 (EMA) is related to tumour characteristics and clinical outcome of invasive ductal breast carcinoma

Aims: To clarify MUC1 patterns in invasive ductal breast carcinoma and to relate them to clinicopathological parameters, coexpression of other biological markers and prognosis. Methods and results: Samples from 243 consecutive patients with primary ductal carcinoma were incorporated into tissue microarrays (TMAs). Slides were stained for MUC1, oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), Her2/neu, p53 and cyclin D1. Apical membrane MUC1 expression was associated with smaller tumours (P = 0.001), lower tumour grades (P < 0.001), PR positivity (P = 0.003) and increased overall survival (OS; P = 0.030). Diffuse cytoplasmic MUC1 expression was associated with cyclin D1 positivity (P = 0.009) and increased relapse-free survival (RFS; P = 0.034). Negativity for MUC1 was associated with ER negativity (P = 0.004), PR negativity (P = 0.001) and cyclin D1 negativity (P = 0.009). In stepwise multivariate analysis MUC1 negativity was an independent predictor of both RFS [hazard ratio (HR) 3.5, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5, 8.5; P = 0.005] and OS (HR 14.7, 9 5% Cl 4.9, 44. 1; P < 0.001). Conclusions: The expression pattern of MUC1 in invasive ductal breast carcinoma is related to tumour characteristics and clinical outcome. In addition, negative MUC1 expression is an independent risk factor for poor RFS and OS, besides 'classical' prognostic indicators

Florida’s Disenfranchisement of Ex-Offenders Shows Criminal Restitution Must Be Reformed

All eyes were on Florida after the passage of Amendment 4 in 2018, whereby voters passed a constitutional amendment seeking to restore voting rights to former felons who had completed “all terms of [their] sentence.” In an act that many saw as subverting the will of the people, the Florida Legislature convened shortly thereafter and passed an implementing bill that interpreted “all terms” of a criminal sentence to encompass the payment of any fees, fines, or criminal restitution orders. Thus, in Florida, ex-felons who have served their sentences are still prohibited from voting if criminal restitution debt related to their offense is outstanding. The Jews of Omaha: The first sixty years

The topic for this study was suggested more than three years ago by members of the Department of History of the University of Omaha. It has involved not only a study of American Jewish history in general, but also further research into a variety of local historical sources and subjects. The study of a Jewish community is much more than a religious history--it is social, economic, political, and cultural history as well. Since it is difficult to evaluate contemporary history and to deal with living personalities, this study covers the subject through the year 1915. By that time the Jewish community of Omaha was well-established, and many of its institutions were at least in the initial states of their development. It is my hope eventually to bring the history of the Jews of Omaha closer to the present

The Possibility of Assessment Tools in Expressive Arts Therapy

Mental health assessments originated as a tool to separate troubled individuals from mainstream society (Feder and Feder, 1998, p. 7). As the field of mental health has developed over time, assessments have come to serve a different purpose. Assessments provide the therapist insight into their clients current experience and data to guide a treatment plan. Data collected from an assessment may be a DSM-V diagnosis, a numeric score, or a qualitative clinical description. As arts-based therapeutic interventions become more widely acknowledged in the field of mental health, modality specific assessments have been developed in order to gather clinical data. Data collected from these assessments may be a painted image, a series of movements, the narrative to a fictional story or the lyrics to a song. As these tools emerge, many question their validity, as they do not often have formal elements of assessment. In addition, a sufficient assessment tool for expressive arts therapists, a newer arts-based therapeutic modality, has yet to be developed. In this thesis, I will explore the necessity of assessment in mental health, the demand and evolution of formal and informal arts-based assessment, and finally, I will examine how The Expressive Assessment and the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) can be used as assessments for expressive arts therapists

Globalización y tecnologías digitales: Un estado de situación

El presente artículo tiene como finalidad presentar un estado de situación de diversas problemáticas relacionadas con el actual proceso de globalización y las tecnologías digitales comprendiendo que ambas son co-constitutivas.Para ello, se realiza un recorrido por definiciones del término globalización analizando el lugar brindado a las TICS y comprendiendo a su vez el papel desarrollado por la lógica del neoliberalismo y del capital financiero en este proceso.Se plantea así una triada neoliberalismo-tecnologías-finanzas que sirve para comprender y elaborar un estado de situación respecto al actual proceso globalizador, focalizando en la producción global y en las configuraciones de Internet en diversos países. De este modo, se problematiza el papel y accionar desarrollado por Estados, empresas y sociedad civil en la lógica capitalista global actual.The purpose of this article is to present a status of various issues related to the current process of globalization and digital technologies realizing that both are co-constitutive. La batalla por la neutralidad de la red en el cono sur : ¿Estado o Mercado?

El presente artículo busca analizar la relación entre el concepto/principio de &quot;Neutralidad de la Red&quot;, entendido como la libre circulación de datos e información sin discriminación o intercepción alguna y los Estados Nacionales dentro del proceso de constitución y desenvolvimiento del actual capitalismo informacional o cognitivo. Se tiene en consideración que la neutralidad de la red no representa únicamente un concepto técnico, sino un campo de batalla económico, social, político e ideológico entre entre Estados, empresas y usuarios. Para ello, además de realizar un análisis de las implicancias del concepto/principio, se recorre y analiza la postura, legislación y accionar del Estado respecto a la neutralidad de la red en Argentina, Brasil y Chile. En la década de 1970 se comienzan a vislumbrar diversos cambios político-económicosociales en las distintas sociedades de nuestro tiempo. El modelo de producción industrial solventado en su articulación con el Estado de Bienestar comienza a desquebrajarse en torno a nuevos modos y formas en la producción. El desarrollo global de la tecnología y su penetración en las todas las esferas de la vida social trae aparejado el surgimiento de un nuevo modo de producir capitalistamente, lo que diversas corrientes del pensamiento han llamado “capitalismo informacional” (Castells, 2001) y otras “capitalismo cognitivo” (Boutang, 1999; Rullani, 2000) que comprende un cambio en el modo de desarrollo (Castells, 1995) dentro del capitalismo al pasar a ser el conocimiento/información el principal insumo de la producción de bienes por sobre la materia y energía lo que conlleva a diversos sectores a replantear las legislaciones y estrategias de acumulación vigentes. A su vez, comienza a gestarse un proceso de reconfiguración de los lazos sociales y de solidaridad que imperan en los diversos colectivos humanos, generando un proceso de cambio en las relaciones sociales “típicas” del capitalismo industrial.
