What goes around comes around: A theory of indirect reciprocity in networks
We consider strategic interaction on a network of heterogeneous long-term relationships. The bilateral relationships are independent of each other in terms of actions and realized payoffs, and we assume that information regarding outcomes is private to the two parties involved. In spite of this, the network can induce strategic interdependencies between relationships, which facilitate efficient outcomes. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions that characterize efficient equilibria of the network game in terms of the architecture of the underlying network, and interpret these structural conditions in light of empirical regularities observed in many social and economic networks
Measuring Future Time Perspective across Adulthood: Development and Evaluation of a Brief Multidimensional Questionnaire.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
Despite calls for the consideration of future time perspective (FTP) as a multidimensional construct, mostly unidimensional measurement instruments have been used. This study had two objectives: (a) to develop a brief multidimensional questionnaire for assessing FTP in adulthood and evaluate its psychometric properties; and (b) to examine age associations and age-group differences of the dimensions of FTP.
DESIGN AND METHODS:
Data were collected from 625 community-residing adults between the ages of 18 and 93, representing young, middle-aged, and older adults. The psychometric evaluation involved exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and confirmatory FA (CFA), reliability and validity analyses, and measurement invariance testing. Zero-order and partial correlations were used to examine the association of the dimensions of FTP with age, and multivariate analysis of variance was used to examine age-group differences.
RESULTS:
EFA and CFA supported a three-factor solution: Future as Open, Future as Limited, and Future as Ambiguous. Metric measurement invariance for this factor structure was confirmed across the three age groups. Reliability and validity analyses provided evidence of sound psychometric properties of the brief questionnaire. Age was negatively associated with Future as Open and positively associated with Future as Limited. Young adults exhibited significantly greater ambiguity toward the future than middle-aged or older adults.
IMPLICATIONS:
This study provides evidence in support of the psychometric properties of a new brief multidimensional FTP scale. It also provides evidence for a pattern of age associations and age-group differences consistent with life-span developmental theory
The origin of defects induced in ultra-pure germanium by Electron Beam Deposition
The creation of point defects in the crystal lattices of various
semiconductors by subthreshold events has been reported on by a number of
groups. These observations have been made in great detail using sensitive
electrical techniques but there is still much that needs to be clarified.
Experiments using Ge and Si were performed that demonstrate that energetic
particles, the products of collisions in the electron beam, were responsible
for the majority of electron-beam deposition (EBD) induced defects in a
two-step energy transfer process. Lowering the number of collisions of these
energetic particles with the semiconductor during metal deposition was
accomplished using a combination of static shields and superior vacuum
resulting in devices with defect concentrations lower than cm, the measurement limit of our deep level transient
spectroscopy (DLTS) system. High energy electrons and photons that samples are
typically exposed to were not influenced by the shields as most of these
particles originate at the metal target thus eliminating these particles as
possible damage causing agents. It remains unclear how packets of energy that
can sometimes be as small of 2eV travel up to a m into the material while
still retaining enough energy, that is, in the order of 1eV, to cause changes
in the crystal. The manipulation of this defect causing phenomenon may hold the
key to developing defect free material for future applications.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
A Simple Explanation for DAMA with Moderate Channeling
We consider the possibility that the DAMA signal arises from channeled events
in simple models where the dark matter interaction with nuclei is suppressed at
small momenta. As with the standard WIMP, these models have two parameters (the
dark matter mass and the size of the cross-section), without the need to
introduce an additional energy threshold type of parameter. We find that they
can be consistent with channeling fractions as low as about ~ 15%, so long as
at least ~70% of the nuclear recoil energy for channeled events is deposited
electronically. Given that there are reasons not to expect very large
channeling fractions, these scenarios make the channeling explanation of DAMA

Radio lobes and X-ray hot spots in the microquasar S26
We have studied the structure and energetics of the powerful
microquasar/shock-ionized nebula S26 in NGC 7793, with particular focus on its
radio and X-ray properties. Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we
have resolved for the first time the radio lobe structure and mapped the
spectral index of the radio cocoon. The steep spectral index of the radio lobes
is consistent with optically-thin synchrotron emission; outside the lobes, the
spectral index is flatter, suggesting an additional contribution from free-free
emission, and perhaps ongoing ejections near the core. The radio core is not
detected, while the X-ray core has a 0.3-8 keV luminosity ~6 x 10^{36} erg/s.
The size of the radio cocoon matches that seen in the optical emission lines
and diffuse soft X-ray emission. The total 5.5-GHz flux of cocoon and lobes is
~2.1 mJy, which at the assumed distance of 3.9 Mpc corresponds to about 3 times
the luminosity of Cas A. The total 9.0-GHz flux is ~1.6 mJy. The X-ray hot
spots (combined 0.3-8 keV luminosity ~2 x 10^{37} erg/s) are located ~20 pc
outwards of the radio hot spots (ie, downstream along the jet direction),
consistent with a different physical origin of X-ray and radio emission
(thermal-plasma and synchrotron, respectively). The total particle energy in
the bubble is ~10^{53} erg: from the observed radio flux, we estimate that only
about a few 10^{50} erg are stored in the relativistic electrons; the rest is
in protons, nuclei and non-relativistic electrons. The X-ray-emitting component
of the gas in the hot spots contains ~10^{51} erg, and ~10^{52} erg over the
whole cocoon. We suggest that S26 provides a clue to understand how the ambient
medium is heated by the mechanical power of a black hole near its Eddington

Insulin detemir offers improved glycemic control compared with NPH insulin in people with type 1 diabetes - A randomized clinical trial
OBJECTIVE—Insulin detemir is a soluble long-acting basal insulin analog designed to overcome the limitations of conventional basal insulin formulations. Accordingly, insulin detemir has been compared with NPH insulin with respect to glycemic control (HbA1c, prebreakfast glucose levels and variability, and hypoglycemia) and timing of administration. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—People with type 1 diabetes (n = 408) were randomized in an open-label, parallel-group trial of 16-week treatment duration using either insulin detemir or NPH insulin. Insulin detemir was administered twice daily using two different regimens, either before breakfast and at bedtime (IDetmorn+bed) or at a 12-h interval (IDet12h). NPH insulin was administered before breakfast and at bedtime. Mealtime insulin was given as the rapid-acting insulin analog insulin aspart. RESULTS—With both insulin detemir groups, clinic fasting plasma glucose was lower than with NPH insulin (IDet12h vs. NPH, −1.5 mmol/l [95% CI −2.51 to −0.48], P = 0.004; IDetmorn+bed vs. NPH, −2.3 mmol/l (−3.32 to −1.29), P < 0.001), as was self-measured prebreakfast plasma glucose (P = 0.006 and P = 0.004, respectively). The risk of minor hypoglycemia was lower in both insulin detemir groups (25%, P = 0.046; 32%, P = 0.002; respectively) compared with NPH insulin in the last 12 weeks of treatment, this being mainly attributable to a 53% reduction in nocturnal hypoglycemia in the IDetmorn+bed group (P < 0.001). Although HbA1c for each insulin detemir group was not different from the NPH group, HbA1c for the pooled insulin detemir groups was significantly lower than for the NPH group (mean difference −0.18% [−0.34 to −0.02], P = 0.027). Within-person between-day variation in self-measured prebreakfast plasma glucose was lower for both detemir groups (both P < 0.001). The NPH group gained weight during the study, but there was no change in weight in either of the insulin detemir groups (IDet12h vs. NPH, −0.8 kg [−1.44 to −0.24], P = 0.006; IDetmorn+bed vs. NPH, −0.6 kg [−1.23 to −0.03], P = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS—Overall glycemic control with insulin detemir was improved compared with NPH insulin. The data provide a basis for tailoring the timing of administration of insulin detemir to the individual person’s needs
Interactive effects of video, priming, and music on emotions and the needs underlying intrinsic motivation
Objectives: Emotions can enhance motivation towards a particular goal (Brehm, 1999), while activation of human motivation does not necessarily involve conscious processes (Bargh, 1990). The main purpose of the present study was to explore the impact of video, priming, and music on a range of emotion- and motivation-related variables, while the secondary purpose was to conduct a cross-cultural comparison. Design: A randomized controlled design was employed to address the interactive effects of video, priming, and music on emotions and motivation with reference to the circumplex theory of emotion. Methods: Participants comprised a convenience sample of 210 volunteers (English, n = 128; M = 20.0, SD = 4.7 years; Male, n = 65; Female, n = 63; Greek, n = 82, M = 23.3, SD = 2.4 years; Male, n = 59; Female, n = 23). A control condition and five experimental conditions were presented to participants in a counterbalanced order. The needs underlying intrinsic motivation were accessed using the Activity Feeling-state Scales (AFS; Reeve & Sickenius, 1994), while emotional states were assessed using adjectives from the Circumplex Model of Affect (Russell, 1980). Results: Findings showed that music had positive effects on emotional states and the psychological needs underlying intrinsic motivation. They also highlighted the positive effects of priming as a psychological intervention – particularly when presented through video and coupled with music. Conclusions: The study presents the state-of-the-art for the use of video, priming, and music in sport and includes recommendations for sport psychology practitioners and researchers
The Hyper Suprime-Cam Software Pipeline
In this paper, we describe the optical imaging data processing pipeline
developed for the Subaru Telescope's Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) instrument. The
HSC Pipeline builds on the prototype pipeline being developed by the Large
Synoptic Survey Telescope's Data Management system, adding customizations for
HSC, large-scale processing capabilities, and novel algorithms that have since
been reincorporated into the LSST codebase. While designed primarily to reduce
HSC Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) data, it is also the recommended pipeline
for reducing general-observer HSC data. The HSC pipeline includes high level
processing steps that generate coadded images and science-ready catalogs as

The R136 star cluster hosts several stars whose individual masses greatly exceed the accepted 150 Msun stellar mass limit
Spectroscopic analyses of H-rich WN5-6 stars within the young star clusters
NGC 3603 and R136 are presented, using archival HST & VLT spectroscopy, & high
spatial resolution near-IR photometry. We derive high T* for the WN stars in
NGC 3603 (T*~42+/-2 kK) & R136 (T*~53+/-3 kK) plus clumping-corrected dM/dt ~
2-5x10^-5 Msun/yr which closely agree with theoretical predictions. These stars
make a disproportionate contribution to the global budget of their host
clusters. R136a1 alone supplies ~7% of N(LyC) of the entire 30 Dor region.
Comparisons with stellar models calculated for the main-sequence evolution of
85-500 Msun suggest ages of ~1.5 Myr & M_init in the range 105 - 170 Msun for 3
systems in NGC 3603, plus 165-320 Msun for 4 stars in R136. Our high stellar
masses are supported by dynamical mass determinations for the components of NGC
3603 A1. We consider the predicted L_X of the R136 stars if they were close,
colliding wind binaries. R136c is consistent with a colliding wind binary
system. However, short period, colliding wind systems are excluded for R136a WN
stars if mass ratios are of order unity. Widely separated systems would have
been expected to harden owing to early dynamical encounters with other massive
stars in such a dense environment. From simulated star clusters, whose
constituents are randomly sampled from the Kroupa IMF, both clusters are
consistent with a tentative upper mass limit of ~300 Msun. The Arches cluster
is either too old, exhibits a deficiency of very massive stars, or more likely
stellar masses have been underestimated - M_init for the most luminous stars in
the Arches cluster approach 200 Msun according to contemporary stellar &
photometric results. The potential for stars greatly exceeding 150 Msun within
metal-poor galaxies suggests that such pair-instability SNe could occur within
