Appraisal of open software for finite element simulation of 2D metal sheet laser cut.
FEA simulation of thermal metal cutting is central to interactive design and manufacturing. It is therefore relevant to assess the applicability of FEA open software to simulate 2D heat transfer in metal sheet laser cuts. Application of open source code (e.g. FreeFem++, FEniCS, MOOSE) makes possible additional scenarios (e.g. parallel, CUDA, etc.), with lower costs. However, a precise assessment is required on the scenarios in which open software can be a sound alternative to a commercial one. This article contributes in this regard, by presenting a comparison of the aforementioned freeware FEM software for the simulation of heat transfer in thin (i.e. 2D) sheets, subject to a gliding laser point source. We use the commercial ABAQUS software as the reference to compare such open software. A convective linear thin sheet heat transfer model, with and without material removal is used. This article does not intend a full design of computer experiments. Our partial assessment shows that the thin sheet approximation turns to be adequate in terms of the relative error for linear alumina sheets. Under mesh resolutions better than 10e−5 m , the open and reference software temperature differ in at most 1 % of the temperature prediction. Ongoing work includes adaptive re-meshing, nonlinearities, sheet stress analysis and Mach (also called ‘relativistic’) effects
A new species, (Orobanche loscosii), a prioritary name for O. Icterica (O. Leptantha) and a new member of the Spanish Flora (O. Elatior)
In the light of recent research that has synonymized the parasites of
Echinops described from France and Serbia to Orobanche kochii F.W. Schultz (a distinct
southeastern European species, mainly parasitic on Centaurea and often confounded
with O. elatior Sutton), we reassess the taxonomic status of the Echinops parasite
from the Ebro basin and conclude that it must be described as a new species. By the
way, we demonstrate that O. leptantha Pomel is a prioritary name for the species for
which Pau coined the binomen O. icterica, a vicariant of O. elatior widespread in
Spain, and we confirm the existence of the true O. elatior in Spain
The overlooked Orobanche balsensis (J.A. Guim.) comb. nov., and some remarks on O. subbaetica Triano & Pujadas
subbaetica. In this paper a neglected taxon of Orobanche s. str. is shown to
deserve specific rank for combining a set of correlated morphological features and a
particular host (Carlina). As it had already been validly named at varietal and subvarietal
rank by J. A. Guimarães it needn’t be validly described, but is here typified,
raised to the rank of species, thoroughly described, illustrated with detailed drawings
and colour photographs and demonstrated to occur well beyond its terra classica not
only in Portugal and Spain, but probably also in southern France, Corsica and Sicily. In
addition, some morphological, chorological and iconographical additions to the
knowledge of the recently described Orobanche subbaetica will be done
Phelipanche cernua Pomel (Orobanchaceae), a prioritary name for the western mediterranean species recently redescribed as Ph. inexpectata
The specific parasite of Lactuca (Compositae) described in 2005
from the Iberian Peninsula as Phelipanche inexspectata (Orobanchaceae) and
known so far in northeastern Spain and southern France, is shown to also occur in
mountain areas of northern Africa, where it had been previously described under the
neglected name Phelipanche cernua. Given the recent proposal to consider the
aforementioned Lactuca parasite a mere variant of Phelipanche schultzii, we stress
the neat differences between both species
What is and What is understood by Orobanche foetida Poir., Voy. Barbarie 2: 195[-196] (1789)?
aprobada, esa especie ibérica y norteafricana debe llamarse Orobanche hookeriana
Ball. After carefully reviewing its protologue and lectotype, it is concluded
that Orobanche foetida Poir. (1789) is an earlier synonym of Orobanche
variegata Wallr. (1825) and cannot be used for the western Mediterranean species to
which in recent times it has been generally applied. Unless the conservation of that
concept of the binomen Orobanche foetida is proposed and approved, that Iberian
and North African plant must be called Orobanche hookeriana Ball
Visualisation of flow fields in the web platform
Visualization of vector fields plays an important role in research activities nowadays. Web applications allow a
fast, multi-platform and multi-device access to data, which results in the need of optimized applications to be implemented
in both high and low-performance devices. The computation of trajectories usually repeats calculations
due to the fact that several points might lie over the same trajectory. This paper presents a new methodology to
calculate point trajectories over a highly-dense and uniformly-distributed grid of points in which the trajectories
are forced to lie over the points in the grid. Its advantages rely on a highly parallel computing implementation
and in the reduction of the computational effort to calculate the stream paths since unnecessary calculations are
avoided by reusing data through iterations. As case study, the visualization of oceanic streams in the web platform
is presented and analyzed, using WebGL as the parallel computing architecture and the rendering engine
MOBILE APPLICATION WITH AUGMENTED REALITY FOR THE TOURIST EXPERIENCE: A CASE STUDY IN THE DISTRICT OF CASA GRANDE, PERUVIAN NORTH COAST
When visiting the Casa Grande District, tourists arrive at the Main Square, from where they see around them many buildings to which they only take pictures and then leave, but they do not know about the history and value that each of them represents. Thus, the objective of this research is to value the diverse architectural heritage that the Casa Grande District has and at the same time improve the tourist experience, through the use of a Mobile Application with Augmented Reality. To carry out the experimental research, the agile Mobile-D methodology was used, which has 5 phases: Exploration, Initiation, Production, Stabilization and Testing; in the Research Design, two groups were used: Experimental Group (Ge) and Control Group (Gc), while Student's t-test was used to validate the hypotheses. Finally, the results revealed that the Mobile Application with augmented reality presented better results in the Ge with respect to the Gc in each of the indicators: time and cost of access to information, the number of visits and the satisfaction of tourists
Orobanche centaurina Bertol. the correct name for O. kochii F.W. Schultz (Orobanchaceae)
Olanzapine compared to quetiapine in adolescents with a first psychotic episode
Objective: To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of olanzapine and quetiapine in adolescents with first episode psychosis. Method: Fifty adolescents (age 16 ± 1.25) with a first episode of psychosis were randomized to quetiapine or olanzapine in a 6-month open label study. Efficacy and side effect scales, as well as vital signs and laboratory data were recorded at baseline, 7, 15, 30, 90, and 180 days (end of study). Results: Out of the total sample included in the study, 32 patients completed the trial (quetiapine n = 16, olanzapine n = 16). Patients in both treatment groups had a significant reduction in all clinical scales with the exception of the negative scale of the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) for olanzapine and the general psychopathology scale of the PANSS for quetiapine. The only difference between treatment arms on the clinical scales was observed on the patients' strength and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) scale, with greater improvement for olanzapine. Patients on olanzapine gained 15.5 kg and patients on quetiapine gained 5.5 kg. Conclusion: Olanzapine and quetiapine reduced psychotic symptoms in this adolescent sample. Patients on olanzapine gained significantly more weight. Side effects with both drugs seemed to be more prevalent than those reported in adult studies
Long-Term Visual Outcome in Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration Patients Depending on the Number of Ranibizumab Injections
Purpose. To analyse the visual outcome in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients depending on the number of ranibizumab injections. Methods. 51 naïve wet AMD patients were retrospectively recorded. Visual acuity (VA), central retinal thickness (CRT) measured with spectral domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT), and number of intravitreal injections were compared at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months of follow-up. Kaplan-Meier survival rates (SRs) based on VA outcomes were calculated depending on the number of ranibizumab injections performed. Results. VA improved compared with baseline at 6 and 12 months (P<0.005). No differences were found at 18, 24, 30, and 36 months (P>0.05). CRT measured with Cirrus OCT decreased (P<0.001) at all time points analysed. The mean number of injections received was 6.98±3.69. At 36 months, Kaplan-Meier SR was 76.5% (the proportion of patients without a decrease in vision of more than 0.3 logMAR units). VA remained stable (≤0.01 logMAR units) or improved in 62.7%. Within this group, SR was 92.9% in those who received 7 or more injections versus 51.4% receiving <7 treatments (P=0.008; log-rank test). Conclusion. Better VA outcomes were found in stable wet AMD patients after 3 years of follow-up if they received ≥7 ranibizumab injections
