    Aggregation of thermostatically controlled loads for flexibility markets

    This paper presents a tool for an aggregator of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to optimally combine their flexibilities into a few representative bids to be submitted to flexibility markets. The tool employs a “bottom-up” approach based on physical end-use load models, being the individual flexibility of each individual TCL simulated with a second-order thermal model describing the dynamics of the house. The approach is based on a direct load control (DLC) of thermostat temperature set-point by the aggregator. End-users receive an economic compensation in exchange for the loss of comfort.     Real-Time Flexibility Market Participation of Thermostatically Controlled Loads

    The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of using the aggregated flexibility of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to provide balancing and congestion management services to system operators through the participation in a real-time flexibility market. To this aim, a TCL aggregation model that employs a bottom-up approach based on physical end-use load models has been developed. A direct load control (DLC) scheme is considered, where the control variable is the thermostat temperature setpoint. This temperature can be manipulated between the upper and lower limits set by end-users, who receive an economic compensation in exchange for the loss of comfort. As output a set of flexibility bids to be sent to the market are obtained. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed aggregation model and estimate the overall flexibility potential from TCLs, a large-scale case study, based on a future power system in Spain has been considered.H2020, 824414, CoordiNe

    Spectral energy distribution of hyperluminous infrared galaxies

    Aims. The relationship between star formation and super-massive black hole growth is central to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRG) are unique laboratories to investigate the connection between starburst (SB) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), because they exhibit extreme star-formation rates, and most of them show evidence of harbouring powerful AGN. Methods. Our previous X-ray study of a sample of HLIRG shows that the X-ray emission of most of these sources is dominated by AGN activity. To improve our estimate of the relative contribution of the AGN and SB emission to its total bolometric output, we have built multi-wavelength (from radio to X-rays) spectral energy distributions (SED) for these HLIRG and fitted standard empirical AGN and SB templates to these SED. Results. In broad terms, most sources are well fitted with this method, and we found AGN and SB contributions similar to those obtained by previous studies of HLIRG. We have classified the HLIRG SED into two groups, class A and class B. Class A HLIRG show a flat SED from the optical to the infrared energy range. Three out of seven class A sources can be modelled with a pure luminosity-dependent quasar template, while the rest of them require a type 1 AGN template and a SB template. The SB component is dominant in three out of four class A objects. Class B HLIRG show SED with a prominent and broad IR bump. These sources cannot easily be modelled with a combination of pure AGN and pure SB, they require templates of composite objects, suggesting that >∌50% of their emission comes from stellar formation processes. Conclusions. We propose that our sample is actually composed of three different populations: very luminous quasars (class A objects with negligible SB contribution), young galaxies going through their maximal star-formation period (class A objects with significant SB emission) and the high luminosity tail of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies population distribution (class B sources).We are grateful to the referee M.     The contested tombs: an ecofeminist analysis of Ursula K. Le Guin’s character Tenar

Le Guin is frequently mentioned in discussions of fantasy literature, not only for the relevance it has narratively and as a saga, but also because thematically it deals with topics inherent to what make us human. The Cycle also gives the reader a view into the development of the author’s ideology and views, due to the almost forty years of writing they encompass, views that are heavily reflected on Tenar the main protagonist of various novels, who was introduced in The Tombs of Atuan and further developed in Tehanu. I contend that one of the key elements to show Tenar’s development in these two novels is her relationship to the space she occupies, which ends up leading to a radical change in the power structures cemented on Earthsea. For that purpose, I not only analyse Tenar’s journey, but elements that disrupt said spaces, be it other characters, like Ged and Therru, or dragons; delving into their relationship with Tenar and how they also aid in her development and search of self. For this purpose, said analysis will be performed through an ecofeminist lens, borrowing elements from feminist studies of gothic spaces to also comment on the characteristics that make one of the most relevant environments—the labyrinth beneath the Tombs—feel like a living being. The outcome of this dissertation being that the Tombs act as an ambivalent space, which empty Tenar of her self to later on feature as a heavy factor on its restoration. The depiction of organisms of power that disrupt the balance in between humanity and nature should also be acknowledged, as this lack of balance later on leads to the systematic oppression of those in vulnerable positions, like Tenar. This last factor being one of the keys to why more narratives, that show slow but effective quests for self, without neglecting to address the difficulty to conform an oppressive state of being, should be encouraged to proliferate

    Modified spinning black holes

    In the context of f(R) modified gravity theories we determine that the black holes existence is determined by the sign of a parameter dependent of the mass, the charge, the spin and the scalar curvature. We obtain the different astrophysical objects derived from the presence of different horizons. Thermodynamics for this kind of black holes is studied for negative values of the curvature, revealing that we can distinguish between two kind of BH: fast and slow

    La red internacional de cientĂ­ficos y comunicadores IPPOG ("International Particle Physics Outreach Group") tiene como objetivo divulgar y educar en fĂ­sica de partĂ­culas. La estructura elemental de la materia y la dinĂĄmica que rige su comportamiento las muestra al gran pĂșblico mediante diversas actividades que tratan de fortalecer la curiosidad por la cultura cientĂ­fica. En este artĂ­culo, que fuĂ© presentado en la Bienal de la Real Sociedad de FĂ­sica celebrada en GijĂłn, en 2015, se muestra resumidamente una de sus actividades de mayor Ă©xito, las Clases Magistrales Internacionales ("International Masterclasses") en FĂ­sica de PartĂ­culas. AdemĂĄs se presenta una actividad desarrollada por el CERN para mantener el interĂ©s de estudiantes de enseñanza secundaria por la fĂ­sica que se desarrolla en las grandes instalaciones cientĂ­ficas, el concurso "CERN Beamline". Los miembros del IPPOG actĂșan en el mismo como colaboradores expertos.A rede internacional de cientistas e comunicadores IPPOG ("International Particle Physics Outreach Group") tem como objectivo a divulgação e educação em fĂ­sica de partĂ­culas.
