    A review of a priori defined oxidative balance scores relative to their components and impact on health outcomes

    Oxidative Balance Scores (OBSs) are tools that have emerged to evaluate the global balance of individuals’ oxidation—reduction status. The aim was to compare OBSs available in the literature regarding their characteristics and associations with chronic diseases in epidemiological studies. Studies that developed OBSs were searched in PubMed until August 2018. A total of 21 OBSs were identified. These OBSs presented different scoring schemes and different types of anti- and pro-oxidant components, including dietary factors (dietary intake and/or nutrient biomarkers), lifestyle factors, and medications. Most OBSs were based on over 10 components, and some included only dietary factors. Few considered weighted components in the score. Only three OBSs were validated as potential surrogates of oxidative balance through inflammation and OS-related biomarkers. Notably, all the OBSs were associated—to a varying degree—with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, colorectal adenomas, and different cancer types (colorectal and breast cancer), as well as with all-cause and cancer-related mortality. For other outcomes, e.g., prostate cancer, contradictory results were reported. In summary, there is a great heterogeneity in the definition of OBSs. Most studies are concordant in supporting that excessive OS reflected by a lower OBS has deleterious effects on health. Unified criteria for defining the proper OBSs, valuable to gauge OS-related aspects of the diet and lifestyle that may lead to adverse health outcomes, are needed

    Viscosidad de zumos comerciales de melocotón, manzana y pera a temperaturas cercanas a la congelación

    Conocer el comportamiento reológico de zumos comerciales susceptibles de ser procesados a bajas temperaturas es de gran interés para el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y equipos en la industria de alimentos. En procesos de concentración de fluidos alimentarios a bajas temperaturas como la crioconcentración, el incremento de la viscosidad es una limitante en la eficiencia del proceso. En el presente trabajo se determinaron experimentalmente las viscosidades de zumos comerciales de melocotón, manzana y pera a concentraciones entre 40° Brix y 50° Brix, en el intervalo de temperatura -6 a 4°C, evitando la formación de cristales de hielo. Se analizó el efecto de la temperatura sobre viscosidad de los dos zumos. El rango de variación obtenido para la viscosidad de los tres zumos a 40 y 50°Brix es de 11 a 22 mPa·s y de 28 a 64 mPa·s respectivamente en todo el intervalo de temperatura estudiado. El zumo de melocotón presenta el valor más elevado de viscosidad (64,0± 0,2 mPa·s a 50º Brix y -6 °C). El efecto de la temperatura sobre la viscosidad de los zumos se representa de manera adecuada por una ecuación tipo Arrhenius. Los zumos estudiados presentan un comportamiento newtoniano

    Methodology for hand-tool vibration analysis using bond graph

    This paper presents an efficient and easy methodology for modeling the vibrational behavior of common portable tools using as example a hand-driller. The work described in this paper uses a Hand-Tool model previously developed by the authors and couples it with different Hand-Arm-System (HAS) in order to evaluate which one reproduces the most realistic vibrational behavior. Although proposed for hand-tools, it can be extended for any kind of tool that produces vibration during its operation. This methodology summarizes different techniques in order to analyze the vibrational system. The different components of the hand-driller are represented as lumped masses and the connections between them with a spring and a damper. The elastic constant for the structural elements are determined by FEA using SolidWorks simulations, while the damping constant values used are the recommended by the software 20-sim for structural damping. Once the model is developed, it will be shown how the corresponding Bond-Graph diagram can be obtained and how it helps in obtaining the equations that describe the model. The software 20-sim is used to simulate the developed Bond-Graph model and to determine the Hand-Arm system vibrational response for a specific excitation force

    Increasing mtDNA levels as therapy for mitochondrial optic neuropathies

    Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a rare, inherited mitochondrial disease. No treatment has shown a clear-cut benefit on a clinically meaningful end-point. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a frequent, acquired optic neuropathy. Lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) reduces disease progression. However, current methods to decelerate this progression are recognized as being inadequate. Therefore, there is a clear need to look for new therapeutic approaches. The growing evidence indicates that POAG can also be a mitochondrial optic neuropathy (MON). Several risk elements are common for both diseases and all of them decrease mitochondrial (mt)DNA content. Based on these susceptibility factors and their molecular mechanism, we suggest herein pharmacological therapies targeted to increase mtDNA levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) capability, and mitochondrial energy production as treatments for MONs

    Los servicios de asesoramiento a los Deportistas de Élite en las Universidades Españolas.

    Los objetivos de este estudio fueron determinar: i) en qué medida las universidades españolas ofrecen programas de asesoramiento a sus deportistas-estudiantes y ii) el tipo de apoyo ofertado. La metodología utilizada fue el análisis documental, y en caso de no existir dicha información, se envió un cuestionario auto-administrado ad-hoc a las universidades para su cumplimentación. Las entidades analizadas fueron las 70 universidades españolas con docencia tipo presencial en grados oficiales. 46 universidades prestan servicios de asesoramiento a deportistas de élite. Las ayudas más frecuentes son aquellas que no conllevan coste alguno, es decir: el cambio de fechas de exámenes, cambio de grupo de clase o las tutorías personalizadas. Por ello, sería recomendable que desde la Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades Españolas (CRUE) se dirigieran acciones comunes y coordinadas, en vez de que cada deportista-estudiante tenga que resolver los problemas académicos de forma puntual

    Curvas de sorción–desorción de humedad en materiales porosos

    In this paper the behavior of the moisture sorption-desorption by porous solid is discussed. Employing the diffusion theory the moisture transference is formulated for the permeable plane sheets configuration. The problem is solved for the initially dry solid clásithat remains at environments with controlled relative humidity and temperature. It is demonstrated that, when chemical reactions don’t take place, between the moisture and the porous material, the sorption-desorption curves manifest a single concavity toward the time axis. Otherwise, when the process is not governed by the moisture diffusion, processes of nucleation and growth of the second phases take place, and then the sorption curves show, at least, an inflection point. The validity of this kind of analysis for other type of kinetic curves is discussed too and is compared with previous results in the literature.En el presente artículo se describe el comportamiento de la sorción–desorción dehumedad por un sólido poroso, partiendo del análisis de las curvas cinéticas deganancia(pérdida) de agua por el material. Empleando la teoría clásica de la difusión se plantea el problema del transporte de humedad para el modelo de pastilla permeable por una cara. El problema se soluciona para el sólido inicialmente seco que permanece en atmósferas con humedad relativa y temperatura controladas. Se demuestra que cuando no intervienen reacciones químicas entre el soluto(agua atmosférica) y el sólido poroso(solvente), las curvas de sorción–desorción manifiestan una única concavidad hacia el eje temporal. En caso contrario, cuando el proceso no es gobernado por la difusión física del agua, dado por la presencia de fenómenos de nucleación y crecimiento de una fase producto, las curvas muestran al menos un punto de inflexión. También se discuten la forma que manifiestan las curvas de sorción-desorción cuando el proceso se inicia con una reacción de nucleación y crecimiento y la validez de este tipo análisis para otros tipos de curvas cinéticas, ejemplificándose con lo reportado por la literatura

    Medical Students’ Perception Towards the COVID-19 Pandemic in Mexico: Distance Learning, Assisting Hospitals, and Vaccination

    Background: Mexico has been one of the most affected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its health workers are playing a substantial role, but they are suffering from a high mortality rate, which highlights the need of vaccinating them before any other population. Medical interns have reduced their practices, some continue to assist clinical rotations without the protective equipment, and they are not being considered for vaccination. We wanted to determine the attitude of medical students and interns towards distance learning, assisting hospitals, and vaccination. Methods: We conducted a paired survey of a cohort of medical students who were evaluated twice, in June 2020 and in December 2020, using an online survey (32-online questions) to assess their perception of the pandemic. Results: We collected the response of 384 students in the summer period and 331 in the winter period; the majority were women from non-clinical semesters, and the median age of response was 21 years old (IQR 19 – 22). We found that the percentage of acceptance for vaccination was 95.6% in the summer and 93.7% in the winter, a remarkable acceptance in both periods. The percentage of students who manifested having someone close to them with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 was 38.5% in the summer, showing an increase to 77.6% in the winter. Conclusion: We observed that medical students had a positive attitude towards vaccination and that the probable COVID-19 cases among them have increased in just a few months
