Reconstruction after a programmed disaster. The construction of a dam: Zuri and Cantalupo Ligure, Italy

    Get PDF
In this essay we present two case studies of the research “The ‘Osso’ of Italy” of submerged settlements: restoration, reconstruction and translation of memories. The main objective is an in-depth and comprehensive study of submerged settlements as consequence of the construction of water reservoirs. These operations which took place mostly between the 1930s and the 1950s, common in Italy and Spain, triggered three phenomena: the disappearance of villages and their rediscovery for tourism purposes; the construction of new population centres with the related problem of the production of memories; and the translation of memories of buildings dismounted before their submersion into new buildings, or parts of them. These two cases are related because the first one, the submersion of the village of Zuri in Sardinia in the early 1920s seems to have become a model of reconstruction for other cases in Italy, while the second one, the Cantalupo Ligure (Alessandria) case, was finally not carried out. The “planned” disaster which represents the construction of a dam is a good opportunity to analyse the reconstruction plans which involved the population historically and which at present constitutes an opportunity to reflect on the needs of the population when their homes are about to disappear. It enables us also to reflect on the topic of “collective memory” in order to build new concepts through which to analyse and design very contemporary fields of study, themes and topics, such as those related to villages in areas with high seismic risk or hydro-geological instability

Effects of extreme temperature on the European equity market

The increasing frequency and severity of extreme temperatures are potential threats to financial stability. Indeed, physical risk related to these extreme phenomena can affect the whole financial system and, in particular, the equity market. In this study,we analyze the impact of extreme temperature exposure on firms' performance in Europe over the XXI century. We show that extreme temperatures can affect firms' profitability depending on their industry and the quarter of the year. Our results are of interest for both investors operating in the equity market and for regulators in charge of securing financial stability

Prevalence of symptomatic and silent stress-induced perfusion defects in diabetic patients with suspected coronary artery disease referred for myocardial perfusion scintigraphy

Purpose: Silent myocardial ischaemia—as evaluated by stress-induced perfusion defects on myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) in patients without a history of chest pain—is frequent in diabetes and is associated with increased rates of cardiovascular events. Its prevalence has been determined in asymptomatic diabetic patients, but remains largely unknown in diabetic patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) in the clinical setting. In this study we therefore sought (a) to determine the prevalence of symptomatic and silent perfusion defects in diabetic patients with suspected CAD and (b) to characterise the eventual predictors of abnormal perfusion. Methods: The patient population comprised 133 consecutive diabetic patients with suspected CAD who had been referred for MPS. Studies were performed with exercise (41%) or pharmacological stress testing (1-day protocol, 99mTc-sestamibi, 201Tl or both). We used semi-quantitative analysis (20-segment polar maps) to derive the summed stress score (SSS) and the summed difference score (SDS). Results: Abnormal MPS (SSS≥4) was observed in 49 (37%) patients (SSS=4.9±8.4, SDS=2.4±4.7), reversible perfusion defects (SDS≥2) in 40 (30%) patients [SSS=13.3±10.9; SDS=8.0±5.6; 20% moderate to severe (SDS>4), 7% multivessel] and fixed defects in 21 (16%) patients. Results were comparable between patients with and patients without a history of chest pain. Of 75 patients without a history of chest pain, 23 (31%, 95% CI=21-42%) presented reversible defects (SSS=13.9±11.3; SDS=7.4±1.2), indicative of silent ischaemia. Reversible defects were associated with inducible ST segment depression during MPS stress [odds ratio (OR)=3.2, p<0.01). Fixed defects were associated with erectile dysfunction in males (OR=3.7, p=0.02) and lower aspirin use (OR=0.25, p=0.02). Conclusion: Silent stress-induced perfusion defects occurred in 31% of the patients, a rate similar to that in patients with a history of chest pain. MPS could identify these patients with a potentially increased risk of cardiovascular event

The effect of incorporating alkaline nitrates in hydrotalcites for use in the combustion of particulate matter from diesel emissions has been studied. The catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (EA), atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Activity measurements were carried out using a thermobalance in air and using a fixed-bed reactor with a NO/O2 flow. The observed activities decreased in the following order: HTMgAlcCs > HTMgAlcK > HTMgAlcLi > HTMgAlc.Fil: Comelli, Nora Alejandra. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Propane and naphthalene oxidation over gold-promoted cobalt catalysts supported on Zirconia

    Get PDF
Zirconia-supported gold-promoted cobalt catalysts were synthesized and tested for the complete oxidation of propane and naphthalene. The catalysts were characterized by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In both propane and naphthalene combustion reactions, the results obtained indicate that catalysts formulated with Co3O4 are more active than those containing only Au. Catalysts prepared using the deposit/precipitation (DP) method have better activity than those in which the traditional technique is used. Gold addition using the DP methods generates a promoting effect on the activity of cobalt-containing catalysts. The AuDpCoZt catalyst was found to be the most active for both propane and naphthalene combustion. The catalytic behavior of this sample is associated with a synergic effect between gold, cobalt, and the support, which is also evidenced by an increase in the reducibility of this catalytic system. The effect of the presence of NO in the feed was also analyzed for propane combustion.Fil: Leguizamón Aparicio, María Silvia del Valle. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Zirconia-Supported Copper and KNO3 Catalysts for Diesel Soot Combustion. Deactivation by Hydrotreatment and SO2

    Get PDF
In this study, the sulfur tolerance and hydrothermal stability of Cu-KNO3/ZrO2 catalysts in catalytic diesel soot oxidation were investigated. Supported alkaline nitrate catalysts have shown excellent activity for soot oxidation in the presence of O2 or NO/O2. High-temperature water vapor treatments do not affect the catalytic activity, suggesting a good hydrothermal stability of the catalysts. Treatments performed at high SO2 concentration lead to a partial deactivation of the catalysts for the combustion reaction in the presence of O2. The presence of copper improves the sulfur tolerance of the KNO3/ZrO2 catalyst for the combustion of soot in the presence of NOx. NO/O2 present in the feed flow of the reactor can regenerate in situ nitrate anions that provide the redox cycles required for the reaction.Fil: Mosconi, Sandra Mariela.
